making news this morning. a race against time. >> the critical mission for rescuers for that crippled cruise liner. passengers still unaccounted for. a big announcement from the scene overnight. we're live from italy. and it's over. today, jon huntsman will end his quest for the presidency. we'll tell you who benefits the most. the golden globes, the winners, the dresses and the hosts who will say just about anything. good monday morning, everybody. i'm rob nelson. >> and i'm paula faris. at least six victims have been

pulled from that partially sinking ocean liner. >> the ship's owner issued a statement saying the captain made an error going too close to the coast. lama hasan joins us from porto . lama, still unaccounted for? >> good morning, rob. yes, i think they just don't know where the unaccounted for people are. i mean, they're going to keep with the search that they're conducting right now. they don't know if these unaccounted people are either still on the ship or if they're staying with people on the island of giglio which is very close to where the rescue is. don't forget, many of the locals provided them with shelter. they took them in. as i said, rescuers going with the search and recovery efforts. we spoke to people at the scene who told us they're going to do whatever it takes so everyone

unaccounted for is found at the moment. the number missing 16, two of them are american passengers, rob. >> lama, whether or not there are survivors of the 16 remains, we are hearing incredible stories of survival, people that have escaped? >> reporter: oh, absolutely, yes. this is hearing all the stories, people comparing it to the "titanic." this is a massive operation. the italian coast guard, scuba divers, rescuers. they're using sophisticated equipment to find those. you can just tell by looking at the wreckage, it's lying on its side. all of it submerged in water. in fact, there's a lot of debris that they have to wade through and it's a massive vessel. rescuers say they still haven't finished searching a part of the ship but it is still ongoing and they're going to keep up with

the search and recovery mission. >> lama, the controversy is the captains of the ship, what he did or did not do. what's the latest with him? >> reporter: absolutely. essentially, the captain is being held for neglect and owners of the cruise liner issued a statement, they said, the captain committed a certification error in judgment which had serious consequences. it was following too close to the shore and his insistence in dealing with the emergency did not follow the costa cruise line. he's still being investigated. rob and paula, back to you. >> questions surrounding him. rightfully so. >> lama hasan live in italy. thank you for the report. the american embassy in rome says 118 of the 120 americans

loved to bash. >> reporter: mitt romney faces the final week of campaigning in south carolina with a boost. jon huntsesman will drop out of the race and endorse rom itny. just a week ago, he implied the former massachusetts govern lackeded accord. >> he has not given us reason to trust him. >> reporter: huntsesman had pledged keep going but the south carolina polls show him in the single digits. overnight, the candidate does not want to stand in romney's way. >> corporate races led by mitt romney. >> reporter: they're not ready to step aside, they have unrelenting attacks hoping to slow the governor's marking for the nomination. >> governor romney's record on the economy, obviously, the real scarlet letter here. >> mitt romney has governed like a massachusetts politician.

hong kong's hang seng lost 192. in london the ftse opened lower. on wall street, the markets are closed today. the dow gained 62 points, nasdaq up 36. much of the worry about europe centers on greece. german officials are meeting with greece. the goal is to minimize the damage. the greek government sand private lenders will meet wednesday to discuss the country. gas prices are normally high this month. they usually back off in january but not this year. in fact, gas prices have risen 11 centers. aaa blamed high crude oil prices and the repeal of the tax credit. the auto club is predicting a tumultuous year for all drivers. and apparently, there's good money in "contraband." the new action film started box offices with a stronger than expected debut. the motion thriller took in $24
