area. we have team coverage across the area. linda so is monitoring the slick commute conditions from work and school and angela and lynette are monitoring the roads and weather. first linda so has more on whatit's like to walk around. it's treacherous. >> reporter: that's the big thing to be careful of, the ice. sidewalks and side streets and anything that was untreated from the weekend snow has turned to ice because we got freezing rain overnight. there's some slick spots from the leftover snow. if you didn't shovel your sidewalk or part of your driveway, this is what yowl -- this is what you will be dealing w it iced over antifreezing rain is not -- overand the freezing rain is not make it -- over and the freezing rain is not making it easy. if you have to go to work, be careful stepping out of your door because it could be slippery. if you have to make your way on

baltimore. it's going to cost a penny more to mail letters to any location in the u.s. up 45 cents from 44 the cost of a stamp that increase took effect yesterday. post cards will cost 32 cents to mail off a 3 n cent increase. it's #:46. -- 4:46 and penn state students are dpreesk over legendary coach joe paterno. sherrie johnson is here with how he is being honored and remembered and the controversy surrounding his life and death. >> reporter: it's a time ofmourning at penn state university. former football coach joe paterno died sunday after a battle with lung cancer. he was 85 years old. since his passing, many have been taking time to reflect and remember. a vigil was held at penn state university. students past and present joined with fans to mourn the lost leader. people flocked around the statue of joe paterno. he was the most successful coach in major college football

history. now he spent 62 seasons at penn state and his 409 career wins are an ncaa record. but a child sex abuse scandal that rocked penn state cut his career short. he was fired from his -- for his reaction to allegation his former assistant sexually mow leted -- mow leafed young boy in a shower but the fans stuck by his coach. >> he was penn state e made penn state. >> he-- he made penn state. >> if it was not for the football program and penn state winning the orange bowl, i probably wouldn't have came to penn state. >> he was a man of character and integrity and man of hope and he brought together the. dramatic fashion. neighbors say it happened in a matter of seconds. a river of mud rushing down a hillside in homes wiping out backyards until it was settled at the edge of a lake. >> i mean it came gushing down like a water fall when you saw it. it was pretty scary. >> amazing video of the water lines and gas lines that have been broken in some of the places. and parts of new england this morning are buried in snow and this is what it looks like in new haven connecticut. the area received about a foot of snow on saturday. we weren't so lucky to get a foot burks we did wake up saturday morning lynette charles to a mild dusting. but it was a mix. snow and freezing rain and that can be dangerous. >> we got the mix and ice out there. and we are doing it again this morning because we have freezing rain and freezing driesel that came down over-- drizzle that came down overnight. it will be a slick commute. so take it easy. looking at satellite and radar, not a lot going on, but we have showers and thunderstorms back off towards the west.

you can see them really pushing through the area. the middle of the nation as of now this is courtesy of a cold front ahead of a cold front passing through. high pressure will build in behind the front as we go into tomorrow. so if we can get through today, things will look up. but, again, this morning, we will dealing with icy conditions. we have a freezing rain advisory until 11:00 this morning. take heed to it, know it's very dangerous out there. the only place that is are not under this advisory the eastern shore. you are in the clear for this morning. now future trend is picking up on the showers that will roll through going through i say the afternoon time frame maybe a couple showers this morning. but again, it's going to be a wet commute out there. even with the rain showersmoving in, it's going to hold up traffic going into the afternoon again. so we are going to have a dicey commute this morning and a dicey commute into the afternoon as well. it won't be until tuesday we get a break and get sunshine back into the forecast for us. so today, that temperature coming in right around 47 degrees. so this is the good news if you don't like the cold

temperatures. temperatures will actually be be above average and we will have the icy spots early on the roadways. now by tonight, dealing with some patchy fog out there. the showers temperatures coming in around 38 degrees. and then tomorrow, much more sunshine in the forecast and check it out. yes, 5 # degrees -- 54 degrees. we are coming to the end of january. and we are not feeling that at all. here to check on the seven-day forecast, once again, some morning ice and some p.m. rain and nice on tuesday and plenty of sunshine continuing until wednesday but temperatures will be above average heading into the end of the week. how's traffic, angela. >> reporter: it's moving okay for now but the icy spots will be getting out of the neighborhoods. be prepared for icy conditions on the monday morning driving. fire activity in the city. south morely and old frederick. if you want to avoid that take south culver street. let's check the drive on i-95 from maryland 32. northbound lanes clear passing

coast where searchers recovered the body of 13 now. a victim on sunday in the shipwreck with the luxury liner off the coast of italy. 19 people remain unaccounted for. and officials are now trying to decide if they can begin pumping out the million and a half gallons of heavy fuel. protective boons have been deployed and it's on a rocky underwater ledge slipping half ionch an hour something many of us mer new. experts say more chinese americans are moving to the suburbs and chinatowns are shrinking into the u.s. sociologist say urban chinatown serve a role for immigrants who can't speak english or drive. however, experts add middle cls families are nowhere to be -- class families are nowhere to find after downtown property cos and white gentrification threatened the towns. and cell phone bills could be rising in canada depenning where the government comes down unless there's more competition.
