at the jones falls expressway at north avenue, traffic running well to downtown, no reported delays. news continues with linda so. >> first lady michelle obama will be stopping? florida today to announce a new health partnership. mike has more. >> reporter: good morning. any other day michelle obama's visit to this area would be not only the top political story but perhaps the only political story, kind of a side story today with the gop presidential candidates making rounds before tonight's debate. first, let me tell you about her visit. it's going to be for a private fundraise they are afternoon for the democratic national committee but earlier this morning she's going to be in tampa for a stop with the usda on the my plate campaign and

then to sarasota for another private fundraiser. of course this is all a build-up for the democratic party, but tonight we have the republican candidates -- let me talk about those. newt gingrich, mitt romney, rick santorum, they will all be making appearances in the sunshine state today in preparation for tonight's debate. gingrich is going to appear at a veterans function while romney is going to be making an appearance at a housing function. ron paul already moved on to other states. most importantly what i want to point out before we get back to you, rick santorum is using some rhetoric now that he may be thinking about leaving the race. yesterday he told reporters in naples, florida, that he's really feeling tired with this campaign, he also wants to just really -- just really put more emphasis on possibly dropping out of

this campaign. we might hear more on that with the debate tonight. back to you. >> thank you for that information. meantime, the first lady's husband, president obama, is taking his state of the union speech message this week to millions across the country. long lines of people are lining up to get tickets in detroit. the president is visiting five states on the nationwide tour, the tour that became testy wednesday with one state's governor. to tell us more about that abc2 news's corrine redmond is here with reaction. >> reporter: when the president visits a city he's usually greeted by handshakes, pleasantries, not this time. president obama had an encounter with the arizona governor brewer while visiting the state. the president is in the middle of a three-day tour through the swing states to talk about the economy. obama went to arizona to visit the intel facility in chandler to reiterate his message about job creation and manufacturing from tuesday's state of the union address. he stepped off air force one, he and brewer, a republican, were seen exchanging words

behind a limo in the president's motorcade. brewer says the president took offense with how he was portrayed in her book. "scorpions for breakfast." >> i wasn't angry at all. i felt a little bit threatened if you will. the attitude that he had. i was there to welcome him. i was there and glad he was here, with us. >> reporter: it's not the first time the two were at odds. in june 2010 brewer filed a lawsuit accusing the obama administration of not enforcing border issues. brewer said she invited the president back to arizona for a meeting. the white house says the president will be glad to meet with brewer again. the president will be focusing on the economy for the remainder of his tour. today he'll be in las vegas and colorado. former presidential candidate michele bachmann plans to run for re-election in november. as the minnesota lawmaker seeks a fourth term in congress. she suspended her presidential

bid earlier this month. it was an alarm of a different kind that firefighter james wills, engine 162 in staten island answered in 2008. the call to save a life of a 3-year-old in iowa who needed a bone marrow transplant. almost 7 now and elise williams met her firefighter hero for the first time at a special ceremony at the headquarters in brooklyn. >> there's no words to tell him how grateful i am. >> seeing my little girl die twice and it was not for this man here she would not be here today. >> elise needed the transplant after the discovery that she had a rare blood disorder. looks like a scene from a hitchcock movie. this is for real though. for the past three months a kentucky neighborhood has gradually been invaded by birds. >> oh, my gracious. >> it's really creepy. it's scary.

in consumer news -- you may notice a change at walmart. the retailer has mixed greeters on the overnight shift. they've been moved to other roles like stocking shelves. the decision was made to save money and have more staff in place at busier times. tomorrow, indianapolis will open the super bowl village. tents are going up around the stadium and the indiana convention center. they will shelter fans from the cold as they soak up super bowl fun. stagers are being set up for musical entertainment and vendors are getting ready as well. >> it's really coming together. everyday, every morning, something different. that i notice -- that i didn't notice the day before. >> of course the super bowl is february 5th. the new york giants will take on the new england patriots. new this morning -- we're learning more about the halftime show that the super bowl is having. madonna will reportedly have company on stage.

good morning, maryland. i'm linda so. time for the abc2 news to go. lynette, charles, grab that umbrella? >> exactly i don't think you'll need it so much this morning but we'll have off and on showers throughout the day. so the real wet weather gets in here as we go overnight into tomorrow morning. but better safe than sorry as we head out because we've already been seeing a couple of

renegade showers moving in. look back on the satellite and radar all the way down into the gulf of mexico. look how that moisture fetch is a very long one. with that any other time, we had the cold air in place and we definitely then would be seeing a winter storm, but we don't have the cold air in place. that is why we're not dealing with any type of wintry weather. you have to go all the way up into pennsylvania to deal with that. again, this morning, we've been dealing with a few showers. now they are trying to push out of the area. as we go through the day we will get a few breaks out there but then we will start to see more rain, more moisture coming in here as we go later into the evening into the overnight. temperatures right now nice and mild into the inner harbor, 42 degrees. more 40s in annapolis and cambridge. in culpeper, around 43. we're seeing the 30s in york, pennsylvania and also into frederick. as we go into your weather bug sites, bel air you're around 35

degrees. 37 aberdeen and also into chestertown. let's check traffic with burt. good morning. >> good morning. u.s. 29 now, first camera shot at maryland 108, traffic runs well in both directions, posted speeds. no problems on the u.s. 29 or i-70. a look at the beltway, at the baltimore national pike, could see traffic building there, traffic moving away is the outer loop side. folks will slow down as you get through that area. tourist 40 and 70. anne arundel county, between orderrans road and the -- ordnance road and the beltway, accident cleared at that location. we're learning more this morning about the dramatic rescue of hostage jessica buchanan from somalia. after a day of medical evaluations preparations are

now underway so she can be reunited with family. abc2 news' sherrie johnson has more on that daring rescue. >> reporter: a very scary ordeal for both hostages but after three months in captivity buchanan is now safe at a u.s. military base in africa awaiting a reunion with family. this mission saved jessica and a danish aide worker. tuesday night after the state of the union president obama told bucanna's father his daughter had been rescued from somalia by the u.s. navy seals. the men were the same specialists that killed osama bin laden. traveling in a c-130 in the dead of night the seals team approached a remote encampment in northern somalia. one by one they parachuted silently to within a few miles of the hideout. in that encomp campment team 6 took down armed kidnappers saving the hostages. jessica spoke with her father shortly after the rescue. >> she says i feel safe for the

first time in 93 days. the men that risked their lives, can't say enough. i really, really appreciate it. >> reporter: president obama ordered the mission to save the hostages after intelligence reports indicated jessica's health was deteriorating. she's now said to be doing very well. the man accused of trying to detonate a phony bomb at a military recruiting center will be back in court. antonio martinez is expected to enter a new plea at 9:00. the 22-year-old originally pleaded not guilty. court documents detail a sting by the fbi that allegedly caught martinez trying to detonate a fake car bomb in 2010 at a catonsville recruiting center. new ration over the murder -- ration over the murder of a lawsuit from laurel. steven mcdaniel appeared in a central georgia courtroom yesterday, accused of killing his former neighbor and classmate lauren giddings last summer. she had just graduated from

mercer university law school and had been out that night celebrating with friends. prosecutors say they are going for the death penalty. giddings' boyfriend, friends and several family members sat in the courtroom dressed in pink yesterday. >> we don't want to say anything that would be misunderstood as thinking he is guilty. we want a fair trial for him too. we want the person who killed lauren to come to justice, whoever that might be. >> mcdaniel's lawyers are challenging the makeup of the grand jury which indicted him. mcdaniel will be back in court for arraignment february 7th. today in harford county we'll be hearing more about a new program to cut down on repeat offenders. the harford county sheriff says despite a recent renovation project the county might need a new detention center in five years because more than half of the people arrested in harford county are back at the detention center again in less than three years. many of them have problems such as addiction and mental health

issues. the plan will be officially unveiled today in a meeting between the sheriff's department and other community leaders. the ocean city mayor's prayer breakfast will feature a speaker whose comment put him in the national spotlight. william jerry boykin has spoken publicly about his belief that islam is not a religion but instead a to tail tehran -- toll day tehran way of life. some are calling for ocean city town officials to boycott that event even though they say he should be allowed to speak. ravens are looking for a new defense coach because chuck pagano is leaving to take a head coaching position, where, out of all places? indnap police. >> say it isn't so but it is, indianapolis. a bittersweet move for chuck pagano but he joins with the

coaches who left the team for head coaching jobs. pagano decided to take the position with the indianapolis colts next year. he joins mike smith, rex ryan, marvin lewis and jack del rio. the colts are hoping pagano will bring his defensive skills with him to help the coats owls of their/colts out of their losing season. jim ersay took to twitter. >> reporter: the response has been positive from most colts fans. >> i think today's going to be the start of a new dynasty for colts fans. >> it's been a tough year. people are ready for colts football again. getting that defensive coach in here i think will be great for the team. >> reporter: chuck pagano will be formally introduced today at 3:00 as the 11th head coach.

human services kathleen sebelius will be in baltimore to talk to women and mothers about jobs and health security issues. the secretary will discuss how the health reform laws effect women and how the obama administration is working to ensure that health insurance companies play by the same rules of fairness that families do. starting today airlines will be required to include all mandatory taxes and fees in the advertised price. the new rule will give customers a better idea of how much the airline ticket will actually cost. the price will not include baggage fees and other optional charges but those will be more clearly displayed. j.c.penney changing the way they do business. they will be eliminating coupons and instead plan to mark down all merchandise by 40% offering everyday low prices. they will roll out the price strategy man starting february 1st. today lieutenant governor anthony brown will join health officials in annapolis for a event that will highlight the health benefits of the proposed

increase of the taxes of cigars and smokeless tobacco. lynette? we have lots of cold air around the nation here. you can see these 20s in denver and 30s around kansas city, el paso. chicago 33. the eye takes you down south though into new orleans, around 72 degrees and 73 in miami. some of that warm air is definitely going to be moving our way as we go throughout the day. this is courtesy of a warm front that is going to work its way in. with that we will warm temperatures up as we go throughout the day. mainly as we go into the evening. so we will see temperatures and feel temperature in the 50s. what we're also watching is the cold front that is going to be pushing in behind it through the overnight. your overnight temperatures could reach around 54 degrees. by tomorrow morning we will be seeing the temperatures around 58 degrees and then we'll start to go downhill throughout the

day on your friday. your future trend picking up on the fact we'll see rain in here as we go into the afternoon. actually, the bulk of it though gets in overnight on friday. so early in the morning we're look at some heavier rain coming in for the commute. it is going to be a wet one. definitely will need that rain gear as you step out and about. we'll get nice clearing though behind that front as we go into friday. sunshine in the forecast for us but we're going to have to wait until then. for today that temperature around 46 degrees. off and on showers as we go into the afternoon. then tonight that is web we'll definitely see that rain, temperature around 52. then tomorrow around 58. morning showers. then we'll become partly cloudy. a check of the 7-day forecast looks like this -- as we go through time you will like the seasonal look or the above seasonable look because temperatures will be in the 40s through sunday. i-83 now, shawan road down
