opportunity to keep practicing even for years. we begin tonight with the frightening crash in harford county. thank you for joining us i'm christian schaffer. a drunk driver ran a trooper off the road last night, he barely escaped with his life. the trooper says the suspect aggressively engaged him, around midnight on mountain road in harford, that's when the chase started. unmarked state police cruiser bares the damage from splintering a fence on old joppa road, one of the rails pierced the front window, threatening the life of this senior trooper. >> his hand may have struck the radar unit in the vehicle. in some prove dential way, that fence post missed his head. >> reporter: state police say 22-year-old john jacob newsel the 5th of joppa, used this cobolt to flashlights and

tailgate the cruiser before pulling up be side the trooper, revving his engine and taking off. the trooper chased the suspect for 3 miles before the crash here in front of the 7th day church. harford county sheriff's deputies spotted the cobolt later initiating a second chase before he crashed his car on singer road. the trooper who comes from a family of a long line of service, escaped with minor injuries. his crash comes 25 years after his father was struck and killed by a tractor trailer on interstate 95. >> it was a tragic situation. one that greatly impacted the maryland state police family. from that, this young man decided to follow in his father's foot steps and grandfather's foot steps, his uncle's foot steps. >> reporter: unlike the accident that took his father's life, the trooper who survived

this crash says it was no accident. jeff hager, abc2 news. doctors at the shock trauma treated the trooper for injuries and he has been released and faces charges including assault, malicious destruction of property and driving under the influence. a break in the case of a deadly hit and run in perry hall. 68-year-old beverly moore was struck and killed as crossing 7 courts drive on the way back from the grocery store. the driver didn't stop. last night baltimore county detectives got a tip on the car they were looking for and found it in harford county. police are processing the ford a hundred for evidence and working to determine who was driving the vehicle a at the time. her best friend is relieved and eagerly awaiting an arrest. >> how could you do that?

this is somebody that other people loved. of trash that you ran over. it hurt. >> she says with detectives finding the car, and eventual arrest her friend will now finally be able to rest in peace. a hearing was held today of killing lacrosse player two years ago. today it was final pretrial day before the trial begins on monday in charlottesville, virginia. jury selection is monday. that's expected to take two days. the trial expected to last two weeks. love found dead in he apartment on may 3rd, 2010 from what investigators say was blueprint force trauma. family, friends and officials took time to honor a fallen officer killed in the line of duty. a ceremony took place in southwest baltimore on wildwood

parkway. the honor recognized service to the city of baltimore, shot and killed by fellow officers last year outside of the select lounge while trying to break up a fight. friends and family gathered to say good-bye to a guard unit as it prepares to leave for afghanistan. members of the charlie company, 169th, medevac will deploy to afghanistan. they will provide medical care and missions , the unit has been serving as part of the first response home land security needs in the u.s. since 2010. for some, this will be the fist mission abroad. the ceremony for us, it's a huge step to get out the door. a lot of this is more for the families opposed for us. its their time to have soldiers say good-byes and recognize them for the hard work and accomplishments. >> expected to last a year.

temperature wise, see how cool friday night is out there. a nice clear day and continues to be clear this evening. as we check out the radar picture statewide, a few passing clouds from the satellite pictures. we are watching a developing system, that will have an impact by the second half of the weekend. significant snows back towards colorado, heavy rains ahead of the system, all the way through dixie and extending in to the eastern part of kentucky. this is the storm we will watch carefully towards early sunday. in the meantime, enjoy a quiet evening and tomorrow not a bad day of weather. up to 50, chance for showers late tomorrow evening on the front edge of the system. we will talk about this storm straight ahead. health officials say the number of people who have gotten sick after consuming raw

milk risen to 5. the cases are in four states including maryland and all are based from family cow farm in chambersburg. officials say consumers should throw out raw milk bough from the farm on or at january 1st. bacteria is the cause of the illless, fda warns raw or unpasture rised milk can contain harmful bacteria. susan g komen was forced to apologize and reverse course on decision to cut grant funding to planned parenthood. on tuesday, komen announced it would cut the funding because they were under government investigation. they drew criticism from conservatives. they also provide free or low cost mammograms. the move by komen angered many, especiallier women who donated millions to komen. planned parenthood ended being overwhelmed with donation surpassing the amount cut by

komen. >> we have seen over the last few days, outpouring of support, important message about that women are willing to stand up for women and women and health. >> abc2 news is a supporter of komen maryland. the founders apologized for the decision that cast doubt on the goal of saving women's lives. one of 25 senators had called on komen to reverse decision, today the reversal is a victory for women. i'm pleased that komen realized error and did the right thing. senator ben carden spoke out about the decision saying in a statement the goal should always be to provide women with important services such as mammograms. i'm pleased with the komen foundation reversed the decision and will continue funding planned parenthood.

are you ready for the 2016 campaign for president? the new york times says one of the possible candidates will be our governor. o'malley is one that could run. others include cuomo, mark warner, elizabeth warren and secretary of state hilary clinton. the times points to o'malley as traveling to south carolina and criticizing mitt romney and the fact he is a quote progress i fighter as indicaters of a possible 2016 campaign. do you know whether your doctor has done something that warrants taking his license away? our bad medicine investigation. why doctors are able to continue practicing even years after they are socked with serious allegations.

medicine , the special page recreated. you can look up the doctor's we tracked by name and complaints, watch all the coverage we have done, look up and found out if your doctor made our cut. despite the cases against many of the doctors, many of them continue to practice for months or years before any action is taken. you trust them with your life. they take an oath to protect it, swearing to do no harm, what about the doctors who break that promise? >> the vast majority of doctors don't have any kind of disciplinary problems. >> reporter: among the 18,000 practicing maryland doctors, there are a handful who do. a small minority who have been forced to take off their white coats, by the maryland board of physicians. some molested patients, and others allegedly played a role in deaths. with findings so serious, you

you would expect swift justice. >> seems to me that the board of physicians with resources should be able to weed the bad apples out. >> reporter: some are taking months or years to resolve. >> after all we have been through, i felt like it was a lost cause. >> reporter: brian waited years for closure after his mother died following plastic surgery. janet wanted to look good for her youngest son's wedding so she had a combination of procedures in 2005. the surgery lasted more than 10 hours, and required an overnight stay. two days after returning home to perry hall, she passed away. >> my son was robbed of his mother, before her time. >> reporter: this family's sadness turned to anger and the doctor had no hospital

privileges. he wasn't supposed to keep patients overnight and five months before her death, another ramierez patient died following a 12-hour surgery. >> had appropriate action been taken then, my son would still have his mother. >> reporter: nothing happened in 2005. or in 2006. after the board was officially notifyed about the death and issues with her surgeon, once her family filed a lawsuit. the board took no action. five more years passed before the board finally revoked his license for failing to meet the standards of medical care in the case of janet and the other patient. >> there is something wrong with the system when people die and it takes five years to look at something and move to action. >> reporter: the delay in the ramierez case isn't isolated. investigators examined hundreds of pages of disciplinary records for 49 doctors slapped

with serious actions since december of 2010. suspensions or revocations. in some cases 7 years for formal action to be taken. in more than a third , the board took two years to initially suspend or revoke a doctor's license. the board's chairman tells us quote there are cases where the board has dropped the ball. >> the board has limited resources. we have to prioritize and if we find a case that warrants urgent action we prioritize that and go forward with it. >> reporter: while the cases are reviewed we found doctors are treating patients. even when the allegations are disturbing. take doctor donald, in the thousand 4, a patient said he was trading oral sex for medication. his license was suspended 6 years later and later revoked for sexual misconduct with that woman and a teenage patient. or look at dr. mark geyer, his

first complaint was filed more than 4 years ago, but it wasn't until last year the board suspended his license for quote, experimental treatment of autistic children. geyer referred to the treatments as chemical castration and ordered to seize and aassist practicing medicine what is more frightening is that doctors who lose licenses can pack up and move to another state. >> they are able to compete a practice until the second state takes action against their license. >> janet's doctor, he is now practicing plastic surgery in florida. months after his maryland license was revoked. we sent in ow hidden camera to see if he would be up front about his past. after our visit we caught up with ramierez in the parking lot. >> here or when you were practicing in maryland?

>> i practice to the highest standard of care. >> ramirez is appealing his revocation and fighting the board of medicine as well, which made a move to pull his license four months after maryland's decision. it's another delay. >> a lag in discipline over series, what appear to be serious offenses means jeopardy to the help of patients. >> i don't think you can roll the dice with people's lives. >> reporter: by taking to much time, he thinks the board is gambling with your life, fighting in his mother's honor, hoping to make the odds better for you. >> every time i say enough is enough, i can't take it anymore, i look at her picture, i look at her plaque, her award, and i say i can't quit. i can't.

degrees or so, and then we will see the chance for showers going up late in day tomorrow. here is your neighborhood forecast, cockeysville 48. 58 ar but tus -- ar by tus. centered over oklahoma now, producing significant weather and precipitation back across the colorado rockies. high pressure changes on for another day or so. lows tomorrow, down to 35 or 36. above freezing. surface temperatures above freezing from a day around 50 degrees. as we get a changeover for all but the high elevations, hagerstown west, a tough

scenario to get much in the way of sticking snow. there will be snow showers in to the early part of sundays. changing to a mix, straight rain towards midday before it comes to an ends sunday, super sundays afternoon. overnight 3 4, tomorrow, not a bad start to the weekend. chance for late day showers, especially west of baltimore. it's tomorrow night we see the rain come in and think a changeover to the mix, with snow showers, and then sunday through the morning hours, maybe primarily snow showers, don't stick that well, then changing back to a mix and rain before it tapers off towards game time late in the day on sunday. seven-day forecast shows basically, some dry and quiet weather as we go in to the early part of next week, we will keep you posted on this sunday morning weather as we go through the weekend. we'll be right back with more abc2 news right after this. stay here.
