check. now we're back to what we see this time of the year. it's a wintery mix. delmarva, through areas surrounding the chesapeake. as you go from baltimore north and west, we're seeing more in the form of snow. temperatures above freezing. it's not sticking. cecil, harford, northern baltimore and carroll counties out to garrett county. so there could be slick spots to say the least even where that snow is meltings that comes down. you can see in towson as we time lapse west towson elementary, you see the snow coming down pretty good. conditions are west. so a lot of this is melting on contact. our freeze line north and west of the city north and west of i-95. travelers are looking east, just wet conditions. as you go further north and west there could be reduced visibility and slicker areas. 30s, more snow showers,

primarily rain to the east. we'll have much more on when the whole thing gets out of here coming up. the calendar says february 8th and a wintery mix reminds you we are in winter. it slowed traffic to a crawl on 83. let's check in with joce sterman. what is it looking like tonight? >> reporter: it is not a crawl. we're not seeing that tonight. things are moving pretty quickly on 83 northbound, just a little slick, but nothing is sticking to the roads or the grass at this point. as far as the roads are concerned, we have the state highway administration to thank. they did a lot of the work while you were-- while you were sleeping. state highway crews and contractors lined up at the salt dome stocking up for potentially what was to become today and tonight.

they're anticipating just needing salt and not plows, not expecting a lot of accumulations. they did a lot of the work overnight to help prep for this, laying down a salt solution that gave them a head start on what it turns out to be. that helped, as did drivers who heeded a warning to get off the roads and get out before rush hour. >> i don't think anybody is good on the road. maryland drivers are not good on the road. >> so you wanted to get off the road? >> oh, yeah. get off the road and get home. >> reporter: you know in these situations where there is a little bit of anticipation of wintry weather people heed that warning. we saw a lot of cars heading north out of the city probably heeding that warning because as they told us when they do have to add salt or plow, having cars

town you'll find the same thing. as soon as you hit the carroll county line, you'll find this. we'll take you to the west side of town and we'll show you what it looks like. here's 70. this has been slow going all day long. then we'll work it in here to the bwi parkway. this is 295 at the beltway. again, very slow going. if you're trying to go north, you shouldn't have any problem. getting out of the city you won't have problems, a little slow going just north of the tunnel. the tubes are all running well. 83 looks like it's going well except when you get to shawan road. look at this, going north on 83 here tonight. then we have that shot that we already showed you. this is the beltway on the east side of putty hill. traffic is running very good. so, again, if you're trying to get out of baltimore city, no

problem. if you're trying to head north, no problem. slow going on 29 and 70 but, again, take it nice and easy. we'll keep you on top of that deadly accident in perry hall. today the prosecution called its first witnesses in the murder trial of huguely organize-- george huguely. we have more from charlottesville on what jurors heard from the first group of witness. >> reporter: the testimony is underway in the murder trial of george huguely. he is accused of killing yeardley love of cockeysville in may of 2010. the first witness called by the prosecution was sharon love, yeardley love's mother. she testified about hearing about love's death and when she heard about this police coming to her home in cockeysville the monday morning and driving to

charlottesville with her daughter lexy, packing up yeardley love's lives. lexy love, her sister was the second witness to testify. there was testimony. the prosecution seems to be using them to set up their case. really, we learned much more this morning in the opening statement from the prosecutor who talked about the night that yeardley love died, talking about george huguely going to her apartment and assaulting her. he talked about the evidence of the jurors weerl' -- we'll see, including photos. he talked about a video interview that charlottesville police held with huguely. we will be seeing that at some point in the trial. there will be a lot of evidence. he talked about the turbulence in their relationship. he said george huguely had been drinking heavily the entire day leading up to the murder. the precipitation ending with

this admonishment north jury -- for the jury. it deteriorated ultimately with him killing her. then it was the defense' turn. the attorney for george huguely told the jury this was a shattering tragedy for the love family. he said when you hear the whole story, he said it's much different. the defense will focus on intent. they're saying without intent there is no first-degree murder, in fact, no felony murder. the dose of spent -- defense spent his time on that -- intent. he said we believe huguely had no intent other than to talk to yeardley love when he went to her apartment. he said you will not believe that george was a murderer. we'll have more information for you coming up on abc2 news at

6:00. reporting from charlottesville, virginia. >> we've got you covered from the beginning to the end of the trial. we have an entire web page dedicated to the trial. you can find this by clicking on the featured stories you'll find in the middle of your home page. same woman who gave birth to a still born baby and tossed him in a dumpster is the same person who led them to the remains. the unidentified woman delivered the fetus in harford county. she notified police and accompanied detectives as they drove to the seasons apartment dumpster. >> based on that direction, the detectives checked the trash bin and found a package, a plastic bag containing the fetus, was transported to the chief medical officer's location in baltimore

for an autopsy. >> the detective later transsported her to the medical center for treatment. he died of a heart attack this morning. callahan served as mayor from 1985 to 1989 and most recent live served as the chief administrative officer. he said callahan was a trusted friend and adviser. new tonight a case of animal cruelty in anne arundel county a pitbull, believed to be a bait dog was found in bad shape in linthicum. the dog, rocky road, was found february 2nd. rocky was in bad shape. the doctors said rocky's injuries were consistent with

dogs used as bait top train other dogs. >> multiple bites on the face and the injury on the front leg appeared to be a knife wound. he was in severe shock. it took us three hours to get him back to normal. friday afternoon we took him into surgery and put in quite a few stitches and got him back together. >> once rocky is healed, he will be taken to tara's house, a rescue group. if you have information call 410-222-8900. sadly these animal cases are happening more and more frequently. unlike us, when bad things happen, they can't speak up. brian cube learn joins us more on a special report. >> reporter: kelly, obviously, these are the cases that stop

social worker who dropped them off. t.j. winick has the very latest tonight. >> reporter: in the long before josh powell blew up his home sunday in washington state killing himself and his two young children, a child services worker pleaded with 911. >> i need help right away. this is the craziest thing. he closed the door. are you there? i smell gasoline and he won't let me in. >> reporter: she was told officers can't immediately respond. >> i have to respond to emergency life-threatening situations first. >> this could be life-threatening. >> reporter: we now know a mentally disturbed father is butchering his father. >> he blew up the house and the kids. he just opened the door. the kids were one step ahead of me. they're 5 and 7. they are -- they were one step

ahead of me and he slammed the door in my face. >> a house exploded. >> the house just blew up and it's on fire. >> reporter: firefighters arrived in just three minutes at nearly the same time powell's sister is also calling 911. >> i'm terrified. >> reporter: she has just received this final voice mail from josh. >> i'm sorry to everyone i hurt. good-bye. >> reporter: sense sunday susan powell's death has been ruled a homicide. if it happened before sunday, josh powell would likely not have had access to his two boys. t.j. winick, new york. all right. continuing to watch this mix of rain, snow and a little bit of everything in between as it moves through central maryland. it depends on where you're watching from.

it is north and west of the i-95 corridor where we're seeing the most significant snow bursts. a ban out toward damascus and western howard county. so this is a pretty decent snow band that could make conditions slick, especially 40 and 70 west. we've got rain coming down as you go to the east and southeast of i-95 back to the eastern shore. here is rain with a little bit of snow mixing in. ground temperature safely above freezing. jo see much in the way of accumulating snow or well north and west central carroll county. i'll show you the weather as it makes its way from the sky through the day. towson, a mix of rain, then snow. now we're getting a wet snow. you can sew on the ground it's not sticking to the roadways, snow coming down here. the hart of harford county, bel air where you have the winter

weather advisory. as you go further south, say ellicott city, some snow showers, maybe a light coating on those grassy surfaces. by the end of the day unless you're well west, car rl county, further west, you'll and up with an inch of slush and that will be on the grassy areas only. a little visibility at the inner harbor. 36 the current air temp at bwi. that's four degrees above freezing, a key factor in this event as that snow comes down. it's having a tough time causing much accumulation at the ground level. 30 in york. 32 in hagerstown. that's our freeze line north and west. so there you could see some snow sticking but most of the major roads have been pretreated.

north and west, the main roads should stay wet as if it were raining. highs did get up above freezing, even am those areas that are at freezing. the ground temp is still above freezing. yet another factor working against this system being much of a major event. across the mid-atlantic states there's not much. we could see a few flurries straggle in out of the west as we go into the overnight hours. temperatures will drop. it will be colder. colder areaing in on the back side -- colder air wrapping in on the back side. could be icy spots. the trend showing this clearing out quickly tonight. we're going to be left with a dry scenario into the day tomorrow. snow showers ending. your thursday forecast sunshine, 45. icy spots will melt quickly. you see the outlook showing a nice recovery thursday, friday, maybe a slight chance of a
