national attention. eight of the prosecution's 35 witnesses have been called so far. in opening statements yesterday prosecutors showed that days before yardley's death, he wrote her an e-mail saying "i should have killed you." he found out about her relationship with another man. the defense says even though they were both unfaithful in the two-year relationship, the defense said the relationship came to an end intending to beat her up, not intending to kill her and the alcohol in her system left her sensitive to his blows. yardley's mother said weeks before her daughter's death she came home visibly shaken because of a altercation she had had with hughley. several people took the stand yesterday. it was a very emotional day, with lots of tears. a small indication of how today and the remainder of the trial will be. sherrie johnson, abc2 news. news time 4:33.

supporters of same-sex marriage in maryland are closely watching washington state after that state passed the measure last night making same-sex marriage legal. >> the bill is declared passed! [ cheering and applause ] >> that bill passed last week in the washington state senate setting the stage for the state to become the seventh in the u.s. to allow same-sex couples to marry. governor martin o'malley made a statement last night. " passage of the bill in washington marks yet another step forward for equal protection under the law nor all americans. it's time now for maryland to do the same." 4:34. new reaction from quality maryland who released an -- equality maryland who released an ad supporting same-sex marriage in our state. >> the same legal recognitions and protections my wife and i have enjoyed the past 46 years. >> some maryland religious

leaders are advocating for a bill to legalize same-sex marriage. they are arguing that the gay and lesbian members deserve the right to marry, and under o'malley's proposed law they would not have to officiate same-sex unions. in annapolis lawmakers will introduce a bill to make a law to report missing children quicker. it's called kaley's law, in member of caylee anthony killed in 2008 in florida. she was not reported missing for a month. if the bill passes a missing child 13 years or younger has to be reported in 24 hours and 48 hours nor children who are older. they -- you may be getting ready to pack up the kids and send them to school. when you do you want to put them in the safest vehicle possible. linda so is in the convention center with more on the baltimore auto show.

the 85-pound argentine mastiff appeared on air with a firefighter who rescued him and is being trained for emergency medical workers. they were on hand. a man in big trouble after leading police on a chase this. is video from a cell phone of the high speed chase on i-40 in georgia. it was taken by a 14-year-old. officers used spike strips to stop the car. the driver had been on the run for felony probation violations. the teen who shot the video says that car was flying. >> this guy comes flying by at about 120 miles an hour. i just pulled out my phone and started to videotape. >> the suspect ended up jumping over a guardrail but officers followed him and eventually arrested him. today pentagon officials may propose changes to the roles women serve in the military. current policies restrict women from serving in certain units directly involved in combat. no details offered about what

a controversial new law is set to take effect in texas. women must now get sonograms and hear about their baby's development before getting an abortion. women seeking an abortion will have now to receive a sonogram 24 hours before the procedure is ever done. they can decide not to look at it or listen, to hear everything, hear the heart beat, for example, but must hear about fetus development. planned parenthood provided 55 women with sonograms, the organization disagrees with this law. >> they call this what they want and yet we're forced to make them go through these hoops, jump over these hurdles and essentially second guess their ability to make a very personal medical decision. >> if doctors don't comply they could face up to $10,000 fine or possibly lose their medical license. former texas high school teacher and basketball coach faces felony charges for giving a student the morning after pill.

temperatures now. 35 degrees in baltimore. easton coming in at 36 degrees. but we do have the winds. those winds always playing a part, huh? they are in the northwest this morning at 12 miles per hour. 16 in dc and we're looking at 6 in hagerstown, 3 in york. we have a wind chill. bundle up. it feels like 28 degrees in baltimore and easton. those 30s you saw feeling like the 20s this morning. satellite and radar, not picking up on a lot. we're going to clear out today as high pressure builds in from the west. that system is already moving its way out into the atlantic ocean as of now the snow is long gone. we will warm up nicely for today but high pressure definitely going to be in control of our weather as future trend picking up on that. then we'll start to see a new system working its way in, as we go late into friday, overnight into saturday morning. so that could be bringing us a wintry mix across the area. then temperatures for today not so bad. around 46 degrees.

syrian president. activists say government forces attacked protesters yesterday killing 50 people. 50 anti-nuclear activists gathered in front of the ministry in tokyo wednesday. protesters demanding the shutdown of the nuclear power plant and stop of nuclear stress tests. greenpeace helped organize that movement. the vatican sex crimes prosecutor is warning bishops they must follow the church's laws and standards on dealing with priests who sexually abuse children or face church sanctions for negligence. this was yesterday. priests and bishops are attending the four had day workshop. some in communist china are fearful that friends, even family members will turn them into police by speaking out against the government. privacy is anything but private in that country. human activists say anyone can be a so-called cybercannibal.
