maryland's most powerful doppler radar, not a lot happening today. yesterday, boy, we saw some snow moving across the area. we had the rain, but we are clear now. that's the scenario as we go through the rest of today. it will be a nice one but for now temperatures are cold. 28 degrees in catonsville. cumberland 28 degrees as well and into columbia, 28 degrees. columbia, howard county, actually got an inch and-a-half of some snow across the area. for today the winds out of northwest at 5 to 10 miles an hour making that 28 feel more like we're in the low 20s this morning. here's that forecast as we go through the rest of today. 46 degrees is what i'm forecasting by the afternoon. lets check the traffic with angela. good morning. we still have that fog, just a little? >> still a little fog on the chesapeake bay bridge especially for those of you traveling on 50. also, another look at the tydings bridge, foggy conditions in that area as well. traveling around the baltimore beltway though that is where wove got a -- we've got a trouble spot,

earlier accident at frederick road. the biggest problem, folks trying to access the west side of the beltway, southbound 795 on the brakes as well as eastbound i-70. let's look at the delays on the west side, this is 695 at old court road. again, traffic very sluggish as you approach the accident scene. the west side looking at a 15-minute delay as you travel from 795 around to frederick road. where the accident clean-up continues. and another live look at u.s. 50, still foggy conditions reported around the bay bridge. here's 50 at i-97. back to you. the pentagon now set to announce big changes in the military. >> it's about the creation of 14,000 new roles for women in the armed forces that would put them closer to combat. >> sherrie johnson has more on what is to be expected today. >> >> reporter: the pentagon will make a major new information announcement. right now women don't serve in combat units or front lines. the pentagon is opening up

14,000 jobs, most of them in the army that have been closed off to women because of the ban on women in combat. the jobs include intelligence, logistics and communications in combat units. it does not mean that you'll see women fighting in foxholes next to men. the pentagon sees this as a first step for equal opportunity for women in the military. more than 300,000 women served in support roles in iraq and afghanistan. now with this policy shift they'll have more opportunities. the policy is expected to happen later this summer. sherrie johnson, abc2 news. 7-year-old girl almost stolen from a walmart in georgia is safe home this morning. brittany baxter was in the toy aisle when a man came up behind her and grabbed her. it was caught on surveillance tape. you can see brittany fighting the man. she kicked him and squirmed and made as much noise as she possibly could. then the man let her go and ran off. >> she did exactly what we teach the little ones to do.

at a time like that. she fought, screamed. >> police arrested thomas woods, a man recently released from state prison. he claims he was not at the store at the time but the video of surveillance shows his car there. that tells a different story. he's charged with attempted kidnapping. a compromise may be in the works in the white house over the controversial plan that would require church employees to cover birth control. the obama administration is trying to quiet the uproar over its birth control mandate. the new rule would require all employers including schools, religious hospitals and charities to offer birth control under the health care plan. the catholic church slammed the new rule as an attack on religious freedom. a recent poll shows as much as 58% of catholics agree with the birth control saying it should be covered. >> this is an issue of women's health and i think that catholic charities believes very deeply that it's important that women get the health care they need.

>> they are looking for an alternate solution including employees to purchase contraceptive coverage directly from insurers. religious groups have a yearlong extension to enforce the rules. this almost seems like a bad joke. a strip club expected to open next to a convent in chicago. but it's no laughing matter now for the missionary sisters of the st. charles. they say this -- the order has been there since the 1940s. the sisters say they were not told what kind of business was going to be opening up in their backyard. until after construction began. by law when an adult entertainment business does go up the village must notify all property owners within 250 yards of the site. in this case the nuns' notice ended up going to the wrong address. >> this is a moral issue.

google wants to check out what you're doing on-line and are willing to pay you for it. the project is called stream live. the search engine is offering $5 amazon gift cards. users will then get another $5 every three months. something to keep in mind. if you have not booked your valentine's day yet you're not alone. a survey from the restaurant booking site opentable.com finds about half of the people will pan their valentines -- plan their valentines daneer this week -- dinner this week. most people will spend anywhere between $100 to $200. so they belong to the same party but harsh words now exchanged between the governor and comptroller. >> what the two were fighting about and what o'malley called peter franchot. >> all right. all right now.

thursday morning, good morning. i'm megan pringle. >> i'm charley crowson. we had snow yesterday but we're moving beyond that now. not that much to talk about. >> a kind of a non-event but that's ok. lynette checks the forecast today >> i want to talk about the snow. some of us appreciate that snow out there. carroll county, east lineboro, 2.2 inches. lots didn't stick yesterday. you saw it on rooftops like we mentioned. also on maybe your mailboxes out there.

all in all it's a event that is over but we will start to see some more snow moving into the picture. the satellite and radar not having it for today though. we're mainly dealing with clear skies now, lots of sunshine as we go into the afternoon. we are going to have some snow moving in here as we go into the weekend. i'm going to detail that, when it moves in and how the temperatures are really going to drop. let's check traffic with angela. we have the ice and patchy fog still. >> still got patchy fog in areas reported. also be prepared for black ice as you head out. you could run into that as well. the big story now, a couple incidents on major roadways. southbound 895 approaching the harbor tunnel, accident there. on the beltway, not looking bad at the bw parkway but once you get to the west side, that is where things are going to be pretty dicey for you, passing liberty road here. plenty of brake lights and backup that opens up after you get to frederick road. that's where the accident occurred. it has been moved over to the shoulder. as you can see, outer loop on the right side of your screen here.

also top side delays, volume related from providence, between providence and harford road. over to you. standing by for day four in the trial of george huguely, the man accused of murdering cockeysville native yeardley love. abc2 news' sherrie johnson has a preview of what we can expect today. >> reporter: testimony resumes about 9:00 this morning. first responders came to yard -- yeardley love's apartment after she was killed and will take the stand. eight of the 35 witnesses for the prosecution have been called already so far. in opening statements yesterday prosecutors showed in the days before yeardley love's death huguely wrote her an e-mail saying "i should have killed you." he found out about her relationship with another man. the defense says both she and huguely were unfaith afl in their two-year relationship. huguely's attorneys say the affair ended when huguely beat her up, never intending to kill her but instead the alcohol and aterol in her system left her sensitive to his blows. yeardley love's mother was the first witness to take the stand.

she said weeks before her daughter's death she came home visibly shaken because of a physical altercation she had with huguely. love's sister, roommates, a former uva tennis player and charlottesville police officer all took the stand yesterday. it was a very emotional day with a lot of tears. a small indication of how today and the remainder of the trial will be. sherrie johnson, abc2 news. the washinhas voted to legalize same-sex marriage setting the stage for the state to become the seventh in the nation to allow same-sex couples to wed. >> senate bill 6239 is declared passed. [ cheering and applause ] >> the governor is expected to sign the bill next week and it takes effect 90 days later. opponents promised to challenge which would put the law on hold pending results of a november vote. the governor 6 our state is looking for same-sex marriage equality. and is now getting the backing of pretty powerful people in the state. some maryland religious leaders

are advocating for the bill to legalize same-sex marriage. >> marriage equality is politically right and morally right. >> join me and so many in maryland's faith community who support making maryland families stronger. >> religious leaders are expected to testify on behalf of the marriage bill tomorrow. lawmakers will also hear testimony that day on legislation to create a cops constitutional amendment that would define marriage as between one man and one woman. maryland general assembly will consider a bill today that would require parents or guardians to promptly notify police about dead or missing children. this is called caylee's law, in memory of caylee anthony. the story of the 2-year-old florida girl who died back in 2008. her mother didn't report her disappearance for a month. the bill would make it a felony not to report a child's death within two hours. new legislation to be introduced today in annapolis to ban minors from using tanning beds. that bill prohibits anyone

under age 18 from using indoor beds. a provision in maryland law allows minors to tan with parental permission. so no go if under 18. opposition is expected from tanning salon openers who fear such a ban could damage their business. new york and california will promptly sign a settlement with the majority of the united states and five of the nation's biggest banks over foreclosure abuses. an announcement is expected this week. the deal would help about a million homeowners who are behind on their mortgages. get as much as $20,000 cut from their loan principles. the money available could jump as high as $25 billion if 50 states approve. 6:50. let the war of words begin. governor martin o'malley now calling comptroller peter franchot a version of mitt romney. in response to criticism of o'malley's tax proposal for the gas hike. the comptroller responded with a bashed reference to -- barbed reference to speculation

that governor o'malley will be running for president in 2016. he's expected to phase in a 20% sales tax on gas. o'malley is pushing a plan to address the serious backlog in transportation projects currently existing in maryland. jury selection process may soon get a little easier in baltimore. a new system taking effect monday in the city's circuit court will allow prospective jurors to return completed questionnaires on line instead of mailing hem back to the courthouse. ones deemed qualified will be allowed to go on line to change the report date if they so choose. peter franchot will announce a special tax break on energy star products. at 12:00 on saturday morning, february 18th through midnight on monday february 20th qualifying energy star products will be exempt from maryland's 6% sales tax. a list of taxable items is now available on the comptroller's web site. the warmer weather is helping your bge bill. the company says customers can

expect to pay $100 to $200 less to heat homes in the winter. in addition falling accommodate comoddity prices, national gas and natural electricity are helping to keep the bills down. bge says on average customers are expected to pay 16% less that winter. "the new york times" reports young americans are spending less time in front of tvs. the full details of research will be released later today. it claims that people ages 12 to 34 are watching their shows on their computer or their phone instead of television. however, the paper reports that americans over age 35 are up in the tv watching habits. 6:52. five things to know before heading out the door. we heard from catholic church leaders, now time to hear from students at a national press club in dc today. students from catholic yiewrvets will present their response to the white house new rules on religious organizations and health care plans including contraception.

oral arguments begin today in mississippi in supreme court to invalidate former governor haley barbour's decision to pardon almost 200 prisoners on his way out of office. 10 cases are going to be reviewed today. among those four convicted killers who served on the governor's trustee list. a man who claimed to be a member of the rockefeller family will be arraigned today charged with a 19-year-old murder -- excuse me, a murder from 1985. he's accused of killing a man 25 years ago, and then burying his body in the yard. the trial is slated to begin this fall. u.s. nuclear regulatory commission today is expected to approve licenses for two new nuclear reactors. why is it significant? it's the first time it's had the approval in 30 years. reactors will be built 170 miles east of atlanta, georgia. time to get moving in america's heartland. first lady michelle obama will kick off today a three-day tour promoting her let's move

the satellite and radar not picking up on a lot. we did have clouds earlier today. things are starting to burn off nicely as high pressure moves from the west. we will get lots of sunshine in here for you by the weekend though, yes, a little change in the forecast. as we start to see more of the white stuff trying to work its way in. future trend picking up on that. i think this might begin late friday, overnight into early saturday morning. and yes, we will get more snowfall out of this. then we will start to dry back out. temperatures are going to be on the chilly side as we go into the weekend. that 7-day forecast is coming up in a second. but for for today that temperature coming in around 46 degrees, feeling chillier. 28 by tonight, seasonably cold. then by tomorrow 50 degrees. we'll get a bit more mild, sun, some clouds mixing in. this is your 7-day forecast for you. look at the temperatures as we go into saturday and sunday. 38, 36, then blustery conditions so we're definitely going to feel a lot chillier

than that. we look good as we head into valentine's day, 48 degrees. let's check traffic now. good morning. >> good morning. the good news, we had a lot of treatment of our roadways so not too bad. as a matter of fact, we're going to show you how easy the drive is now on 95, for those of you coming in from harford county passing mountain road. no delays at all. as a matter of fact, very light volume there. not the case, however, on the west side of the beltway. had an accident in addition to the volume delays that we see on the west side as you can see at liberty road we're not recovering yet. it's still bumper-to-bumper from 795, as we look at old court road making the drive all the way around to frederick road. that is where the accident was on the west side. it has been moved to the shoulder but still major delays, about 15 minutes, as a matter of fact, yeting from 795 to frederick road. >> if you're wondering where charley is now, he ran out. >> national bagel day.
