valentine's day. some clouds, getting chilly. we'll talk how the tuesday shapes up and the rest of the week. almost billion dollar mortgage relief settlement for maryland found distressed homeowner lighting up the phones on a new hotline center. jeff hager has more on the delays and dollars tied to that help. >> reporter: foreclosure have changed the face of many neighborhoods here in maryland. >> lot of people in the neighborhood had a whole lot of, had he -- even colleagues are homeless, because of it. >> reporter: volunteers manning the attorney general's mortgage settlement hotline handled almost 100 calls an hour mornings, as people jumped at the chance to save their homes. >> they tried to refinance, deal with the banks, and have been unsuccessful. most have talked about getting

the run-around every time they contacted the bank. >> reporter: with $960 million coming to the state to help people refinance, or to lower the amount they owe, consumer protection director bill groom says the first order of business is seeing if you qualify. >> the settlement was with the five largest service error, bank of america, jpmorgan chase, wells fargo, city bank, and ally gmac. >> the settlement isn't going to cover everyone even with those five servicers. most significantly, it's not going to cover people whose loans are owned by freddie mac orphan any may. >> reporter: it could be three months or more before any mortgage holder gets any assistance. but operators at the hotline are offering these tips. if you don't have one already, you should get a housing cons sorry attach to -- counselor attached to your case by calling 1-877-462-7555. keep making your payments if you can. and make sure you open any

the deficit by $4 trillion. >> by reducing the deficit in the long term, what that allows us to do is invest in the things that will help grow our economy right now. we can't cut back on those things that are important for us to grow. we can't just cut our way into growth. we can cut back on the things we don't need, but we have to make sure that everyone is paying their fair share for the things we do need. >> republicans complained the budget continues gimmicks, and too much spending. nasa will have less cash to work with. the state's agency is looking at about $300 million in cuts to its exploration program, that means two missions to mars may have to be scrapped. the budget is expected to be around $18 billion. among other things, the cash

will be used to keep the space station up and running, and to build a new rocket that can take humans to mars some day. ge is helping out the her roque men and women that that serve our country. they plan to hire 5000 veterans in the next five years. ge is teaming up to host hundreds of job fairs for veterans, the company says some of the store will offer extra job training. ge employs more than 10,000 veteran. a grizzly story unfolding today in northern california. where authorities are unearthing the remains of a serial killing spree, jewelry and bodies have been recovered. >> reporter: kept in the green hills about 60 miles south of sacramento, this abandoned ranch is the scene much a slow motion nightmare, where investigators have found about 300 human bones

position. >> reporter: in a race this tight, appearances could mean anything, mitt romney walked away with two victories this weekend. he took the maine caucus caucusy just 3% over ron paul, and romney won the cpac straw bowl. garnering enough support for the conservative voters he is trying to i am breast. the significance of the -- impress, the significance is debatable, but romney will take them nonetheless. the man romney edged out in the cpac poll, rick santorum, says the four-man race -- we'll hear from rick santorum, he said this is not a four person race, he is trying to pose this as a two person race. and that's the messages staying with. and newt gingrich is saying the most important election since 1960.
