was comfortable commanding a battalion of fourth and fifth graders and using a gentle touch to help children achieve. a big guy with big heart. when it came to the little guys and girls at carney elementary school, robert, marchanti was mission positive. to help the first through fifth graders learn to read. >> he would come to anybody's classroom, do they need any help, will work on phone nicks -- phonics, history, whatever it was and he loved it. you could tell. >> reporter: major marchanti came to teaching late in life. there are not a lot of men teaching on the elementary school lex and this tough soldier was a kind teacher who helped guide many children. >> when he first came, he told the students i have two

passions. one is being a soldier and one is working with kids. >> reporter: he did both with gust toe. he was someone motivated to do whatever he good. the mark of a good teacher, the mark of a good leader, the mark of a good friend. >> a pat on the soldier or the reassuring of whatever is going on in their day, we can hand tell. he was an allout team player. he wanted those kids to know he was there for them and would do anything he could to make them help them learn some things help them accomplish some goals. >> he was a larger than life person. of course he had that physical stature. he was the type of man as soon as you met him, you gravitated to him. the kids just loved him.

the pentagon will continue its partnership with afghan troops. now to the latest on violence hitting close to home. the baltimore police have released the name of a man charged with shooting a man during a burglary. bradford holup faces a series of charges after shooting a homeowner who came home and survive -- surprised him. holup fired a warning shot into a claire before ordering the man around his home at gun point. after directing the senior to go to the basement, he shot him from the back of the neck before running from the hus on -- house on allegheny avenue. we saw -- the officer witnessed

the suspect run out and jump into an automobile. the officer conducted a traffic stop, found appeals of property from the victim on the suspect's person and he made the arrest. >> the unidentified person has been treated and released from sinais hospital. meanwh is being held with no bail. >> early this morning officer got a report of two suspicious vehicles driving around in odenton. the caller said people were putting things in the back of the mini vafnlt officers saw two people in the area. they tried to stop both cars. after a brief stop a woman driving a honda accord sped up and two officers had to jump out of the way. officers followed the honda which eventually crashed. the woman was arrested along with two passengers. carlton johnson was arrested at the scene of the crash, but the

other passenger ran off. officer searched the area and found jasper brinkly hiding nearby. the man from the original traffic stop was searched and police found a motorcycle inside. it turned out to be stolen. you have a chance to report minor crimes. there's a new online crime reporting tool today. it allows people to report certain crimes without calling 911. >> the two were citizens who report minor crimes such as lost property, abandoned cars, destruction of property or theft. it will take you through a series of simple questions to see if they can find it online or if they need to do it in a more traditional way. >> once you follow a report,

one stable and one serious condition. the shooting happened blockeds away from where i'm standing at chardon high school. five students were shot. one has died. the gunman turned himself. the gunman is tj lane. the victims were shot at three different locations in the high school building and a handgun was used. this is what officials tell us the chief said. that the teacher chased tj out of the building. that's when he turned himself in to a couple of bystanders. we learned from a student that tv lange threatened to bring a gun to school.

there's grief counselors available for the middle school nearby, several different rare prayer -- prayer vigils, so a close nit community having to do with all of this. police had a fast response. they worked with different agencies. they are not releasing 911 calls yesterday. there are too many to go through. we're trying to piece together the information. unfortunately, one of these students has passed. two at least are in critical condition. so live in chardon, ohio, reporting. >> you can continue toe follow this story -- to follow this story on our website at abc2news.com. we'll add new details as they become available.

getting ready to compete for scholarships and bragging right unless the third annual teen talent hunt competition. it gives student as chance to showcase some of their talents. education reporter sherrie johnson shows us how it's making a difference for students. >> reporter: it's less than a week before the competition. she's warming up her tow vocals, rehearsing for the competition. she hopes to one day become a professional singer. >> i evidence and my ultimate fear is performing in front of a big crowd but i'm slowly getting used to it. >> reporter: it gives student as chance to showcase their talents and win scholarship money.

cancer is designed for young men. girls and boys, ages 11 and 12, have routine vac seenls. younger children between the beige ages -- begin the ages of 9 and 15 respond better. it's been 10 years since a major study linked hormone replacement therapy to higher rates of heart disease and breast cancer, so many doctors stopped prescribing it. but new data may have doctors reconsidering. researchers found women in their 50s are not necessarily at higher risk of heart problems or stroke from hormone replacement therapy. the scientists did still find the risk rough breast cancer to be real but they can be reduced by estrogen only pills. there may be new hope for
