officer for his actions. the family of monae turnage said the older sister of one of the boys had a relationship with one of the officers. they feel they had something to do with how monae'sed about dip ended up in the -- monae's body ended up in the alley. >> still, i think that somebody -- something else happened. some kind of way something happened. >> reporter: now, again, police have not commented beyond saying this officer is indeed suspended and are awaiting the outcome of the criminal investigation. coming up at 6:00 we'll explain how the turnage family is dealing with this latest news.

brian news. a 4-year-old boy is dead an the mother is injured after a shooting at the home. shanice kellam woke and found her son dead. according to police, the boy was playing with the father's handgun. kellam is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries. a baltimore county firefighter is recovering tonight after he was injured trying to rescue a man who was trapped. he was hit by a falling tree. >> reporter: firefighters have a tough job on a good day. today they received a scare after one of their own went down while trying to save another man's life. there's never such a thing as a simple or routine rescue for a friemplet the driver of this red

suv lost control and went off of krommwell bridge road and went into the ditch. the ladder prepared to lower. >> two little branches broke off. we recognized at that point there was an issue with the tree. the operator of the aerial ladder was told not to move, so the force of the rescue operation, one of the branches snapped. that's what hit him in the head. >> reporter: instead of having one victim, there are two victims, one of their own. the firefighter was hit in the head with the tree that was about as big as round as a baseball bat. he was life flighted to shock trauma. >> he was wearing full gear. he was wearing a helmet. that helped protect him. however, he was seriously injured.

cut up front fees for refinancing loans it already insures. this could help 3 million people reduce their mortgage payments by about $1,000 a year. service members will get compensation. and there will be a refund of old per charges for those denied the chance to refinance. in democracy 2012 tonight it is super tuesday. in 10 states voters are weighing in on which republicans should get the chance to challenge president obama in know. three of the candidates, santorum -- rick santorum, mitt romney and newt gingrich criticized the president. representative donna payne has died from colon cancer.

people blind-sided by the killer tornadoes. and more teams from fema are trying to survey the damage. mother nature has dealt another blow. snow covered houses in indiana, kentucky and tennessee are making the cleanup effort more difficult. now we take you to henryville, indiana. you've seen the stories of devastation but nothing as incredible as the story of stephanie decker. jamie cost tell low joins us with the story. >> stephanie lost both of her legs from protecting her children from not one but two tornadoes. this is what's left of the decker home. nothing. after two tornadoes blew through henryville, indiana last friday night, decker moved to protect her 5 and 8-year-old boys, covering them with a blanket to

shield the debris, but the wreckage did hit her, almost cutting off both legs. a second twister was headed right for stephanie's family. pinned down by the two children, she covered her two children. >> they were screaming. mommy, i can't live without you. please don't die. >> unable to move the heavy debris, 8-year-old dominic went for help. stephanie survived but both legs were amputated. the boys are okay. jamie costello, abc2 news. the morning starts off with a scare in harford county, a chemical scare sent students to the hospital. jeff hager has the details. you note feeling. you didn't win the powerball ticket and you just hopes someone good did. some one has claimed her prize. her story and why she got the

tommy clack was in court today. joce sterman has been following him for a career and joins us with the latest. >> reporter: tommy clack entered guilty pleas. we won't know his sentence for several more weeks. clack was in annapolis circuit court. it involves two specific cases

in anne arundel county where homeowners said clack paveed their driveway and charged them thousands of dollars. as part of the deal other pending cases against clack will be dropped. tommy clack was not sen tensessed-- sentenced. however, victims will be able to tell the judge how they feel about them. clack's victims may get some of their money back. as part of the plea deal, prosecutors said they could get pieces of $70,000 in restitution. joce sterman. >> the odds are one out of 175 million but that's all it took to make a rhode island senior a multimillionaire. the lives of the woman and her family are changed forever. >> reporter: the country's smallest state now boasts one

in a south wind pattern already. so that is going to be a trend that will keep us say in the as frigid with that warmer south breeze and begin to warm us up as we go through the day tomorrow and on thursday. wind chill factor, winds are out of the south. typically a warmer wind. because the cold air mass is here, any wind at all create as bit of a wind chill. feeling like 39 in annapolis. 3 in cambridge. clear for tonight. tomorrow the winds continuing to come out through the south. it's going to be a warming scenario. we should shot past 60 degrees. the overall pattern high pressure under control. this dome, again, was cold in the center. we didn't have the north winds but had the air mass. that moving offshore. the warmer southerly breezes kicking in in earnest.

all right. let's get you up to the minute on some of our top stories. baltimore police have suspended an officer in the death of this girl, 13-year-old monae turnage, for his conduct after the shooting. her body was found in an alley in northeast baltimore.

two boys, ages 12 and 13 have been charged with involuntary manslaughter. the suspended officer had a relationship with the sister of one of the boys. a volunteer firefighter was released from shock trauma. authorities say he was helping a driver at the scene of the crash in carney when he was hit in the head by a fallenning tree. he is expected to be okay. and tommy clack entered a dpul ti please he was in annapolis circuit court to accept the plea deal. homeowners say clack paveed the driveway and charged them thousands for the work even though he wasn't licensed. other pending charges could be dropped. he could face
