i'm paula faris. there are breaks developments in afghanistan after the deadly attack at the hands of a u.s. soldier. >> the taliban released a statement overnight vowing revenge. >> abc's tahman bradley joins us. >> reporter: hi paula and t.j. the president of afghanistan called the shooting an assassination, a suspect is in custody. photos from the scene show the carnage. as many as 16 afghans including nine children and three women gunned down in the middle of the night. they killed a child says this mother. nato officials believe a rogue army staff sergeant apparently carrying an automatic weapon and a pistol, left his base, went to a nearby village and shot victims at random. >> we can say definitively that

this was an individual acting alone, not with authority. and we also have the individual, the suspect, in custody. u.s. custody. >> reporter: this morning, investigators are interrogating the alleged shooter, a 38-year-old soldier from'lewis, washington. in a statement, president obama said the incident is tragic and shocking and does not represent the exceptional character of our military and the respect the united states has for the people of afghanistan. >> i can't think of anybody in the world who would say that killing 16 women and children is okay anywhere in the world. much like when you're waving that american flag. >> reporter: the shooting rampage comes a month after u.s. personnel were seen burning korans. they worry this incident could further strain the relationship. >> it's going to complicate missions most definitely. >> reporter: public support for the long decade-long war remains low. a new abc news poll taken before the shooting found 60% of

investigation. >> reporter: think about it, in the last eight or nine year, this soldier has been gone about half the time from his own family. there's absolutely no excuse for what happened, but they are going to look into mental stability. was he suffering from posttraumatic stress? you've seen in the military over the years, a huge spike in suicides, a huge spike in posttraumatic stress. so, yes, that's exactly what they'll be looking at. >> so many questions still to be answered. we'll get a live update from the white house later this morning on "good morning america." and rising gas prices are hurting president obama in the polls. an abc news poll released overnight finds that 65% disapprove of the way mr. obama is handling the issue. just 38% approve of the way he's handling the economy. but it doesn't seem to be hurting the president's re-election chances. 54% of those polled thought that mr. obama would win in november. only 40% thought that republicans would win. and the president's most likely opponents is celebrating a milestone birthday on the
