ridge went up to $3.99 a gallon. all right. we want to start with this developing story. i know you've been on the phone with your daughter or son in college park where police have stopped a potential shooting very. a 19-year-old sophomore, alexander song, is going through a mental evaluation. >> reporter: alexander song wanted to go on a shooting rampage and quote kill enough people this make national news. the 19-year-old ussments md student from howard county posted that comment and others like it on these two sites which allow the user to remain anonymous but the remarks were believable enough for a umd police to get tips from as far away as montana, justifying an all out investigation. >> discovered the ip address

that sent the orange message -- original message. they determined that the messages were sent from a campus location. >> that location was oakland hall on north campus. police arested song 10:00 sunday morning. he was unharmed and no guns were found in his dorm. after monitoring his internet activity, detectives believed this was a credible threat from a disturbed young man. >> he was very emotionally distraught to the point of shaking and crying, clearly in need of psychiatric assistance, which we made sure he received. >> he threatened to do it on the mall. at any given time there are students crisscrossing their way to class. today many conversations all over campus about how tragic that would have been. >> i couldn't imagine it.

there's some kids out here. that would be crazy. >> these two are freshmen from howard county sitting on the very part of campus that was a target today. >> i was concerned that this was like virginia tech. we can't have that happen here. >> thankfully, they didn't. they were notified through the campus alert system and felt safer today by the obvious and frequent presence by police officers, increased patrols that the department said despite knowing song worked alone will continue. brian kuebler, abc2 news. >> while song is charged with a misdemeanor, that could carry six months in prison. pals -- as for why he threatened the shooting rampage, he was stressed out by his school work. someone struck for a second time shooting out windows up and

down main street. one shot hit a large plain glass window at the family restaurant while diners were eating inside. you can see the bullet hole there and a few blocks down bell hair police believe the same person took autism a window at the tae kwon do academy and the front door of a nearby bank. police found a ball bearing and that hints that vandals were using a sling shot. >> the window would have gone, i would have had to board it out. they came out and replaced that. this is special size. it would have been a couple weeks. >> this is the second time in as many weeks the vandals have struck. if you have any information, ir' asked to call the bel air police department. prosecutors say an 18-year-old pleaded guilty to

the stabbing of a bel air man. done el -- donnell graham stabbed patrick ward several times. ward later died. police are trying to determine what led to the stabbing death of a 28-year-old man. the mother's 54-year-old boyfriend is in custody accused of stabbing the younger man to death on pikeswood drive. the 28-year-old took himself to the hospital where he later died. >> the victim does not live at that address. that's the suspect's address. he took a cab there. there was an altercation and the victim got into the cab. >> the investigation continues into what led up to the stabbing

executive chairman. etchle -- exelon has a presence in 47 states. a law can make it illegal to smoke if you have a young child in the car, if the child is younger than eight. on friday the bill was amend making the age 16. supporters realized though had voted in error and the amendment was overturned, lowering the age to eight. a few states have passed similar bills but some feel parents should make the choice. >> i think that's more the parents are going to make their own decision. parents make good decisions anyway. >> while second hand smoke is not good, limiting it to children under eight will make it easier to enforce. did you see the gas prices? ridiculous. nationally, it's $3.81.

it's due to a refinery regulation but right now the average price is $3.78 for regular. that's 10 cents higher than a week ago and 22 cents higher than last month. taxes are due in just over a month, april 17th of this year. when tax season comes scams are common. this year scammers are taking a new approach. joce sterman has more. >> reporter: it's the place upfind sol list every sunday -- solice every sunday morning. coich could be a good place to snag victims. thieves are targeting seniors and low income people making bogus offers to get them a refund or stimulus money and they're using churches to pull it off. in some cases the crooks

approach in person with promises of free money, but the irs said they're sending homemade fliers to churches targeting people who belong there because of the trust factor. the scam has all the red flags the irs warns about on its website. in the end, the sins of the scammers will cost you. the irs said ult' pay upfront for these nonexistent refunds that never turn up and you'll be left wishing for help from a higher power. >> the irs has a few tips. be wary of any offers for free money and offers that make -- and other offers. for these and others, just head to abc2news.com/scam alerts or click on the money tab at the top of the home page and the

scam alert link. every six minute as child under the age of five is injured from a fall downed stairs. researchers are issuing a call to all toddlers to make sure they're toddler proofing their homes. they found that between 1999 and 2008 about 931,000 children were injured on the stairs. about 25% of those were being carried by their parents. researchers here at hopkins say that most of the injuries small children receive on the stairs and around the home can be prevented with proper planning. they say the stairs, have to be secured in every home that has toddlers. >> a lot of times, watching a child, if you turn your back for a second, things could change, so, you know, baby walkers,

bel air, charm city. kent island. it's a gorgeous view. you see the clouds thickening up. it will get tougher and tougher to show you sun set at kent island. well past 7:00, headed for 730s. some rain in garrett county. a boundary will slide through. could bring showers in before dawn. we think the best chance will come tomorrow. we're dry as a bone. temperatures have been the story, cool north and west. overall mid-60s to upper 50s in ocean city. for most of us it's mild on a south wind. that's a mild air flow. we're expecting it to continue. mid-atlantic radar showing limited activity, some in gairp rete county.

by have the clouds beginning to fill fer. that will help keep temperatures up tonight. if we keep a decent cloud deck that will keep temperatures up warmer. the trend is for more warm air to continue to surge in. ahead of our weak area of low pressure a bit of a disturbance a trough line that will come through, spark showers, maybe a thunderstorm or two. with temperatures in the mid-70s, we'll have the potential for scattered storms. this is 5 a.m., maybe a shower for your early morning commute. as we move into tuesday evening and afternoon indicating a line of storms. it could be a pop-up thunderstorm or two trying to sneak out in the mid-70s. watch out for possibly at least a passing shower or thundershower. looks like it will be dry on wednesday. overnight 52, clouds on the increase. tomorrow your two-degree
