we begin with breaking news on this tuesday. >> after began stan reeling from the rampage by a u.s. soldier. protests this morning. we're getting word of an attack on retaliation. southern support is what the republican candidates are hoping for. putting star power to work on the campaign trail. and clean get away. detergent theft on the rise. and the bus bandit. flying down a freeway at high speeds without tires. what it took to end this very dangerous chase.

good tuesday morning, everyone. we're watching the situation in afghanistan, following the deadly rampage on civilians by a u.s. soldier. >> an take on an afghan government delegation by militants. we'll get the latest in a moment. also today, hundreds of angry students held a protest, the first anti-american demonstration since the 16 civilians were prutly killed. the president the situation makes his more determined to get u.s. troops out of afghanistan. >> nick schifrin is live in kabul. can you update us? >> reporter: the fear today is that the anger from the incident over the week seasoned rising

and spreading. we saw two incidents. a large protest in eastern afghanistan. it ended peatfully. it was the first major protest outside the area where this incident occurred. that's a bad sign for the future. will there be more protest this is week. and in the last hour or, so an attack on a government delegation investigating the murders. this delegation includes brothers of the president, hamid karzai, and a dozen journalists. we don't know quite what's happened. it's a significant uptick in what the taliban has threatened to do. which is attack u.s. soldiers and anybody helping the u.s. >> and nick, considering the pru to t brutality of what happened on the week end, it seemed retaliation was inevitable. will there have an effect on the

american troop withdrawal? >> reporter: i think the pentagon, the white house, the u.s. forces here all say the same thing. this is not going change the strategy. we're still withdrawing and transferring security to afghans by tend of 2014. the fact is the popularity for the war back home is shrinking. the popularity of u.s. troops among afghans inside afghanistan is shrinking. you see some reports, some evidence that the white house and that people signed the accompliest tab lishment think we should reduce the troops quicker. to get to a much lower number before 2014. >> thanks, nick, for your insights. and in syria, opposition activists are stepping up pleas

for international intervention. more than a dozen innocent men, women, and children are said to have been killed, a charge that the government denies. word that syrian forces have planted land mines along the roads that the syrians are using to flee from the violence. there are 119 delegates at stake in the south today. the caucus in the state of hawaii as well as the primaries in mississippi and alabama. tahman bradley joins us with more. >> reporter: mitt romney realizes that the south is tough territory for him. he calls it an away game. he's hoping for a road victory. today, voters in two solidly conservative southern states make their choice for the gop nominee. alabama and mississippi pose a big test for mitt romney.

crashes are raising safety concerns about them. >> 50 students on the way to school in indianapolis when the bus slammed into a rail road bridge. a 5-year-old girl and the driver were killed. they're hoping the driver's autopsy will explain why the bus crashed. in caught state, a school bus veered off the road and flipped on its side. everyone on board suffered some kind of injuries. investigators trying to figure out what led to that crash, too. a stolen school bus made quite a scene on the roads in new mexico. a half dozen police cars gave chase. they threw down three sets of spike to bring the driver the a halt. >> wow. more than 100 people had to be rescued by boat after flood waters rose near lafayette,

"the hunger games" hits theaters in ten days. the stars were out in force in l.a. last night for the world remere. george pennacchio was there. >> i loved the book so much. to see it come to life and be here with the cast, to have people age to see it is very exciting to me. >> reporter: josh hutcherson is one of the stars of "the hunger games." >> i believe it's one of the most powerful films i have seen. i was very nervous before i saw it for the first time. i feel more at ease now that i feel it's a great film. >> there's 24 of us. only one comes out. >> reporter: it takes place in the post apocalyptic world. mandatory reality show where almost all the contestants wind up dead. elizabeth sbanks part of the ensemble. >> she's a lovable villain.
