this morning, police under attack. >> two developing stories. in new england, five officers shot, including a chief, just days from retirement. and california, flames overnight, as a suspected cop-killer keeps officers at bay throughout the night. also this morning, mission failure. north korea's rocket thought to be capable of hitting the u.s., ends up in the ocean. but does it make the regime even more unpredictable? fireworks. a new show from one o world's most active volcanos. and this is no stupid pet trick. geronimo, the jumping dog, and his big day today. good morning, everybody, on this friday the 13th. we do begin with that developing

story out of new hampshire. five police officers shot. one fatally, in a drug bust gone horribly wrong. >> it's a violent national trend. more and more police officers killed in the line of duty. but for greenland, new hampshire, it is devastating. this morning, police in this small coastal town had the suspect surrounded. the gunman wanted for shooting five police officers during a drug raid, injuring four of them, and killing the local police chief. >> they entered the home at that time. and they encountered an armed subject. >> reporter: the shooter opened fire on the officers as they entered the house during a drug bust. a woman also remained in the home early this morning. chief michael maloney was killed leading his men in the raid. he was set to retire later this month. as one town leader put it, it's an unbelievable situation. state leaders have rushed to the hospital, where the injured officers are being treated. >> i do want to extend my

thoughts and prayers to the family and relatives and loved ones of the police officer that has been killed and the four police officers that have been injured. >> reporter: an unthinkable tragedy for this police department that only has seven members. two of the injured officers have been treated and released. the two others are still hospitalized. we'll be paying close attention to this story. we'll have much more coming up on "good morning america." and another developing story we're following, another attack on law enforcement. flames engulfing an apartment building in modesto, california, overnight. a suspect was believed to be holed up inside, after the shooting deaths of a deputy, as well as another person. the shots rang out, as police tried to serve an eviction notice. police are admitting that a combination of flash devices and tear gas could be responsible for that fire. and we turn, now, to that rocket launch that had much of the world on-edge yesterday. north korea's highly-promoted launch, tourned out, though, to be nothing but a high-profile

dud. that is some relief to the countries in the rocket's intended path. joohee cho has more from seoul, south korea. good morning, joohee. >> reporter: rob and paula, it was a big embarrassment for north korea. they had invited world reporters to witness the launch. but we found out after it took off and after it failed. the three-stage rocket was supposed to fly south towards the philippines. but it did not separate. instead, it exploded into 20 pieces soon after takeoff and well all over the west sea, about 100 miles from where i stand here in seoul. this is the fourth try by the north korean scientists. the last one in 2009. but they have never acknowledged failure, telling their people the opposite. this failed rocket cost $850 million, enough to feed the entire nation for almost one year. north korea is also criticized for violating international law. and the obama administration is calling this launch a provocative act. all that does not matter when it

comes to national pride. more reason now to go ahead with north korea's third nuclear test, detectived and suspected by intelligence sources. rob and paula? >> joohee cho. thank you for that report. and the obama administration called the launch a provocation. but what exactly is the reaction from the white house now. for that, we turn to tahman bradley in washington. what are officials saying about all this? >> reporter: good morning, rob. in a statement, the white house press secretary said that north korea is only further isolating itself by doing this. and that the u.s. is committed to the security of its allies in the region. secretary of state hillary clinton called north korea's actions regrettable. white house officials are trying to say that obama administration sanctions have prevented north korea from developing its missile technology. >> and we expect some international reactions, as well. what kind of sanctions could north korea face because of this? >> reporter: there could be

severe sanctions. the u.s. has cut off food aide that was supposed to go to the starving citizens. the u.n. should take action. and, rob, there's a security council meeting that's scheduled for later today. >> should be interesting. they spent $850 million on that rocket, while so many of their residents are starving. tahman bradley, thanks for that report. we turn to florida where george zimmerman has spent his second night behind bars. he was in court for the first time since he was charged with second-degree murder. at his side, his new lawyer, who said zimmerman spent his first night in jail in virtual isolation, weeping for hours. >> he's tired. he's stressed. again, he has, in effect, been isolated for several weeks. and that's got to take a toll. >> o'mara says his client plans to apologize in some way directly to trayvon's family. but when he appears in court again at the end of may, he will

enter a plea of not guilty. something of an interesting defense coming from the son of robert kennedy, in reaction to charges stemming from a hospital incident back in january. douglas kennedy invoked his father's assassination while in court. he is charged with endangering his baby son and harassing two nurses while trying to take his 2-day-old son from a maternity ward. kennedy said he was within his rights to hold his son in his arms. time for weather from across the nation. heavy rain will soak most of california's lower elevations today. and then, pound the mountains with up to a foot of new snow. the other severely stormy spot stretches from the texas gulf coast to the canadian border. expect rain, hail and wind up to 70 miles per hour. >> here on the east coasts, we'll be basking in temps close to 70 degrees. mostly 50s in the west. l.a. is normally 70 to 75.

today's high, though, city of angels gets up to 59, which is downright awful for l.a. yeah. well, coming up, a big-city mayor rushed to the hospital overnight after taking part in a house fire rescue. and business news this morning. the season of spending on prom is upon us. students shelling out hundreds more this year. and some funny video you've got to see. a parallel parking failure.

overseas markets are up today on economic success in the u.s. and that rocket failure in north korea. tokyo's nikkei average picked up 113 points today. hong kong's hang seng added 339. in london, the ftse opened higher. and on wall street, the dow gained 181 points yesterday. the nasdaq index was up 39. well, we are learning more about why best buy ceo, brian dunn, resigned abruptly this week. "the wall street journal" reports dunn may have miscaused company assets while having an affair with a female subordinate. dunn, who is married, started working at best buy 20 years ago at a salesman. your boss has to give you a lunch break but can't force you to take it. that's the ruling from the california supreme court. the unanimous opinion affects thousands of businesses and millions of workers, especially in the restaurant industry. the workers contend they are pressured to keep working. >> taking my lunch now. no. >> go ahead. >> make the director nervous.

the price of prom this year is soaring, as teens and their parents are influenced from anything from the red carpet to award shows to social media. the average cost, get this, i can't believe this, almost $1,200. that's $270 in the past year. much of that is for the dress and the tux. one analyst calls it a social arms race. can't believe it, almost 1,100 bucks. >> prom dress swap. and a company that offers warranties for smartphones have been collecting some of the dumb excuses its hears. among them, get this, it was run over by a lawn mower. also another excuse, it was dropped while going to the bathroom. i've done that. also, another excuse, it stopped an arrow. >> you take yours in the restroom with you? >> i'm a busy guy. but a clumsy guy. next on this friday the 13th, a dramatic rescue that had the whole town on-edge. but this has a very happy ending.

a fierce storm has erupted on the campaign trail over motherhood and work. it began when a democratic strategist criticized mitt romney's wife, ann, a stay-at-home mother of five. both parties are now caught up in the whirlwind of all this, including a few first ladies. for more on this, here's abc's jake tapper. >> reporter: in an interview with abc's cedar rapids, iowa, affiliate, president obama distanced himself from the remarks of a prominent democrat criticizing stay-at-home moms. particularly this home, ann romney. this kerfuffle began when hilary rosen, who has ties to the white house, here she is attending a white house state dinner, criticized mitt romney suggested that his wife is his connection to women voters. >> guess what? his wife has never worked a day in her life. she's never really dealt with the kinds of economic issues that a majority of the women in this country are facing.

>> reporter: ann romney herself took to the airwaves to refute the notion she's, quote, never worked a day in her life. >> this is, obviously, an awesome responsibility, to raise children. mitt said to me, more times than you would imagine, ann, your job is more important than mine. >> reporter: the remarks set off a fire storm. every mother works hard, and every mother deserves to be respected, tweeted first lady, michelle obama. jake tapper, abc news, the white house. >> everyone backing off that comment. former first lady, barbara bush, joined in the debate, as well. a phone call to a fox news show. mrs. bush praised ann romney for raising five boys while battles breast cancer and m.s. newark, new jersey, mayor, cory booker is out of the hospital after playing hero to his noibs. he came home to find the house

next door in flames. he and his security detail helped people escape. and they were successful. he was treated for smoke inhalation. in southern california, search crews will be out in force today across a rugged desert area looking for a missing hiker. he disappeared on sunday, leaving friends to explore mud caves. he had no shoes, food, water or cell phone. authorities believe he may still be alive. a wichita dog owner thought he had lost his beloved pet forever. a bolt of lightning frightened his dog so much that he ran into a creek and hid under a concrete embansment. he was trapped there as the swollen river had crept higher. a camera caught a glimpse of his snout through a tiny hole. and they pulled him to safety. lucky dog. well, the nhl playoffs are under way. and the nba's are getting close. two teams that will definitely

updating the stop stories. the tense standoff overnight in a small new hampshire town. four police officers were shot. and a police captain killed in a drug bust that turned violent. north korea's controversial rocket launch ended in failure just after liftoff. the u.s. said the launch did violate international agreements and has canceled food aid promised to that country. and a united airlines flight was forced to return to san francisco overnight after it was hit by lightning. the plane landed safely. there was no injuries. looking at today's weather, sunny, dry and beautiful along much of the east coast. rain, hail and wind from texas up to the canadian border. and some pleasant weather, but some rain throughout california. and finally this friday morning, politicians present and past, a bear versus a texter and pizza stuffed with hot dogs? that sounds fabulous. >> it's all fodder for the late-night comics.
