scam alert monday. the thought have losing money would get your attention but that's what scammers are getting. we're working for you. joce sterman explains in this week's scam alert. >> reporter: chances are you've heard the name but maybe you don't know what the fdic really does. scammers these days are counting on that, sending email that is use the agency's four famous letters to intimidate. >> it sounds official. you've got to contact us right away because we're going to suspend your banking privileges. there's something wrong with the security, you know, of your bank account. >> reporter: but the consumer credit counseling service said it's a scare tactic. >> identity thieves are banking on the fact we don't know that and we would be scared.

>> reporter: scammers get it using that poser email. this claims to be from the fdic and asks you to click on links and hand over personal information to fixed supposed problem with your account. >> the moment we do that they're into our computers. >> reporter: tracking our passwords, pin numbers or personal information thanks to new technology. >> if you get one of the emails, the fdic does not do business with individual customers. if there's a problem with your account, you'll hear directly from your bank. >> we will piggy back on that. in you get one of these fake emails, contact your bank independently just to make sure there are no problems. then you send the email to the fdic department's fraud department and alert. you can find the information on our website. just head to abc2news.com and click on the money tab right
