your briefcase. let's check the traffic with angela. good morning. how are the roads handling. >> reporter: good morning to you. you mentioned that wind gust. we have are reports from motorists on the key bridge on the east side of 695. high wind in the area. so extra caution as you head out this morning. traveling around 695, not seeing any trouble spots there. on 95, we do have that disabled vehicle reported at keith avenue. it's a disabled tractor trailer block two right lanes as you pass by. but traffic volumes are light. no delays behind that. now for those of you making the drive around the top side of the beltway, here's a live look at dulaney valley road picking up in volume but moving at pretty good pace. john edwards was a promising candidate for president. today he will sit in a courtroom accused of violating campaign finance laws to cover up an extra marital affair. sherrie johnson joins us with more on what to expect today. >> reporter: well, today is a huge day for federal

prosecutors trying to convict john edwards of violating campaign fine finance laws. andrew young will be on the stand to tell what he knew about edwards affair with rielle hunter. the government accuses the former senator of an illegal scheme to hide hunter from voters and his wife who was dying of cancer. all of this during the 2008 presidential campaign. prosecutors intend to play voice mails he left on young's phone in 2007 as the scandal was unfolding. but young is not a perfect witnessch the judge revealed the former aide improperly contacked other witnesses in the case to ask about the testimony. he also claimed he fathered a baby with rielle hunter which we learned was john edwards child. >> i will regret for the rest of my life the pain and the harm that i caused to others. but i did not break the law, and i never, ever thought i was breaking the law.

>> the difficulty here is compiling the evidence necessary to prove that this type of payment was indeed for campaign purpose. >> reporter: if john edwards is found guilty the charges could put him behind bars for up to 30 years. sherrie johnson, abc2 news. news time 5:32. the sanford florida city commission rejected the resignation of the police chief harshly criticized for his handling of the trayvon martin case. the commissioners voted 3-2 to reject the resignation of bill lee. majority blamed the uproar surrounding the death on outsiders. lee temporarily stepped down as police chief on march 22nd saying he wanted to let tensions cool. george zimmerman is laying low until the next court appearance set to take place in may. the family of the 6-year- old arizona girl says they will never give up trying to find their daughter. overnight, police continued searching landfills near the girl's home. the family says isabel ce lis said in a statement they

appreciate everyone's interest in finding isabel and thank volunteers searching for her. fbi dogs went through the home of the family on monday and turned up information that required a follow-up but authorities refused to elaborate. the new orleans saints are denying any anonymously sourceed espn reports that monday claimed general manager makeey -- mickey loomis super dole booth was wired to listen to the opposing coaches radio communication during game. if the saints activated a system it would have violated nfl rules and would have infringed on wiretapping laws. you've seen this video. routine police chase. this is anything but ordinary. a woman pulls a spiderman move and latches onto a moving van after brandishing what appears to be a gun at police. look at this. when police captured the suspect, that's when things get more and more intense. you can see the van finally

stops. but the female suspect gets out and surrenders. the driver hesitates and then cops let the dog out. the driver tries to dash off, but then the dog sinks the teeth in. >> where did that dog sink it's teeth in megan? >> ouch. >> the rump. all right the fishermen had to fight off a sea lion not a dog. they were salmon fishing and landed a wild salmon and they were getting ready to release it into the wild. that's what you do but the sea lion grabbed the net and swam off with the fish. nearly everyone of the fishermen were piled in the water because sea lions are strong. this is a story generating a lot of talk in the newsroom a new york woman says she donated a kidney for her boss. she says she lost her job because of a good deed. debbie stevens says jackie convinced her to donate a kidney so she could move up the transplant list. but stevens says she had complications during the recovery and took a few extra sick days. she says her boss called her

now "good morning maryland." autism affects one in 88 u.s. children. that rate is rising according to a new report due out this month. >> and there's so many questions that we have surrounding the developmental disorder. and health reporter linda so is here in the studio and brings us more on the story of one mom's journey raising an autistic child. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. this is grippen townsend and you know your story you have a son with autism -- grippen townsend, and you know your story. you have a son with autism. he was almost 2 when he was placed into a program at kennedy creeinger. >> yes. he started a program for six months at kennedy krieger. he got one every day for two hours. >> reporter: how did that help? >> tremendously. it helped him learn how to interact with other people, looking at -- they really

taught him to look at people's eyes and how to interact with other children to help . they helped him with hits speech. >> reporter: when he first entered he didn't talk at all. >> he didn't talk and was having temper tantrums because he was frustrated and couldn't communicate with us. >> reporter: and now you see him he is 6 years old, and in a regular school. that's got to be great. >> it's great. and you know, it's exactly what he needed. and each child is different. he has done well and is in a typical school and doing well with his friends. >> reporter: so as a parent, you know that early intervention means so much and means such a difference. what advice do you have for kids or parents going through this for the first time? >> it's scary to see your child be disconnected with you. so it's very important to recognize the early signs. not be afraid to go to the pediatrician because in the long run if you get that help, you just -- the child's brain

now "good morning maryland." >> time is running out for organizers of the baltimore grand prix as they try to ve the race. abc2 news sherrie johnson is here with the latest on the race and why it's in jeopardy in the first place what's going on. >> reporter: things are not looking so good. race officials are behind schedule. we are over four months away from labor day weekend when the grand prix race is supposed to kick off. a website is actually inactive right now and not selling tickets for this year's event. city councilman william cole says there's a 50-50 chance we will have the race and the odds are worse with each passing day. new partners who came forward to organize the race might be in trouble. one of the partners in the down horse racing partnership might be leaving the group.

>> we are getting to a point in time where it will be difficult for event to be successful. we are not there yet. >> the good news unlike last year the road that make up the course are ready for another race. this means that setup won't be as complicated and take as long this year. council members say racing organizers have a couple years left to get things figured out. sherrie johnson, abc2 news. 5:47. 46. maryland board of education is set to take official action on the school superintendent. they have chosen the lillian lowery. governor o'malley will speak at the meeting and lowery has been in the position in delaware since 2009 and is known for leading delaware to be the first state in the federal race to the top of a grant. lowery will start on july 1st. transportation secretary raylahood will hold news conference on a a new

initiative aimed at teen driving and distraction. they will look at what happens when teens get behind the wheel and knowingly distract themselves. the backwater waste treatment plant is going green. today the mayor along with other officials unveil a solar renewal energy project. the ribbon cutting will take place at 10:30 this morning. that ceremony will take part in celebrate the addition of solar energy power to produce sustainable clean energy for baltimore. governor o'malley is addressing leaders from india and married at business forum in baltimore. members of the indian chamber of commerce will be attending this event. it's the largest and oldest apex business organization and represents leaders in life sciences, and technology and renewable energy. maryland and india signed an agreement in december to increase two-way trades in the investment. the earth daig day celebrations continue with --
