linda. >> reporter: federal health officials say it's safe to consume meat and dairy products. they say the latest case is an isolated one, not the start of an epidemic and the animal never entered the food supply. infected cow was detected through random testing at a plant in california. that plant converts animal biproducts such as tissue and bone meal into other items. it's the first confirmed case of mad cow disease in six years. mad cow disease is a potentially deadly brain wasting infection that can be transferred to humans. if you recall a. outbreak in britain during the 90s killed 150 people. the usda says they will continue to investigate the latest case but the agency says dairy products and meat are safe to consume. >> our live stock population some of the healthiest in the world, and consumers should be confident in our food supply. >> reporter: the dead cow is in quarantine until the usda gives

instructionss on proper disposal. cecil county health officials say rabies has been found in a sickly stray cat that scratched five people in downtown port deposit. five people were scratched on friday and the cat was youth eyed and it's described as a small to medium sized yellow tabby. anyone exspesed to the animal -- exposed to the animal in the past 10 days should go to the emergency room. a picture of a fire in southwest baltimore. this came from a member of the baltimore firefighters union. this happened in the 2100 block of older street. the truck-- oller street. the building was frequentedly the homeless and it's possible it was set accidentally and no one was hurt. looking at news around the nation, half a dozen teens in southern california were taken to emergency rooms for the past few months over hand sanitizer. public health officials say they were treated for alcohol

poisoning after drinking them. officials there tell us the l.a. times they are worried about this. it could become a dangerous trend. and, of course, it's very easy for teens to purchase. so we want to know what you think. is it a legitimate concern or a few kids doing something that was not very bright? head to the facebook fan page and weigh in. we want your thoughts. jetblue passengers reached the destination this morning after a bird strike forced the flight to make an emergency landing. that flight was in route from westchester county new york to west palm beach florida with about 54 passengers on board. jetblue says the flight landedsafely and no one was injured. passengers were put on a different plane to continue the trip. a mother says her daughter has been bullied enough and says her child is terrified to go to class because of a fellow students. he pushes her around and once chased her with scissors. she had to be separated from a classmate when in the third grade but they were put

taking his message on road to college across the u.s. he has students attention with discussion on students loans. sherrie johnson has more of this story. sherrie. >> reporter: well, president obama headed out on a three- state trip including stops at university of north care lineate chapel hill university of iowa and colorado urging congress to extend reduced interest rates on federal student loans. if congress does not act, the interest rate will double from 3.4% to 6.8% on july 1st. senate democrats will push for a bill to prevent interest rates from rying on federal student loans. they unveiled the 5.9 billion dollar bill on tuesday after the idea was endorsed by president obama and republican presidential front-runner mitt romney. students lined up to get inside the event to see obama. there were also some protesters on hand. >> all the older brothers and sisters in college when he ran they don't have jobs. and my degree will mean nothing unless there's a good job

student loans. new this morning a. former bp engineer has been arrested in connection with the company's gulf oil disaster two years ago. the first criminal charge that the justice department has filed in that disaster. kurt was arrested and charged with intentionally destroying evidence. 11 people died when the rig -- horizon explode in the gulf of mexico in april of 2010. nearly 206 million gallons of crude oil poured into the waterways over the next three months before bp was able to get that well capped. you can weigh in today on the plans for a seismic exploration for oil and gas in the atlantic ocean. instead of drilling, they would use the way to find the resources. those opposed say they will lead to offshore drilling. a hearing is held at the double tree hotel in annapolis.
