a hearing is is set this morning in the trayvon martin case. i'm linda stow. what george zimmerman's attorney plans to tell the judge about a huge discovery made this week. new details about student loan interest rates. more on the politics on this issue that hits you in your wallet. if you're planning a movie this weekend, you may even change those plans. the reason a local theater is closing and for how long. those details straight ahead on this friday morning. good morning, maryland, i'm charley crowson, thanks for joining us. megan is live at the sugar loaf craft festival. we'll check in with her in just a bit. first let's get a preview of that weekend forecast and say hello to meteorologist lynette charles. >> good morning, charley, good morning, everyone we pretty much have a fab friday on tap. the reason is we're drying out and we'll see plenty of sunshine. we are windy and cool, that will continue as we go into the afternoon. mostly clear and dry will prevail for today. satellite and radar picking up on a few clouds out into western maryland and also western pennsylvania, but for the most part closer to home

here we are dealing with mainly clear skies. that will translate into plenty of sunshine as we go into the afternoon. this morning es are cool, not cold, 49 degrees in aberdeen, 51 in bel aire and chestertown coming in right around 51. the winds will be gusty as we go throughout the day, so be prepared for that. let's get a check now of traffic with greg. good morning reporter: reporter: good morning. a warning in the city, southbound in the city 95 at 295, we've had overnight road work. you're single file to the right. we are told by authorities that will be in place until 5:00 a.m. road work after 195, the exit for bwi, that is now being cleared. northbound harbor tunnel is closed. they've opened up everything at the fort mchelpry tunnel north and south. york and charles that should be cleared anytime. jfx inside the beltway, the left lane closed in each direction. now back to you.

>> thanks a lot. a new development this morning in the george zimmerman case. his attorney now says zimmerman has received about $200,000 from supporters and this morning abc 2 news' linda stow is standing by with how this could impact zimmerman's freedom. reporter: his attorney plans to tell the judge about the money at a hearing later this morning. he says the bail amount may have been higher if the judge knew zimmerman had raised $200,000. it came in from online at zimmerman's website. that website has since been taken down. omera said he found out about the money on wednesday when they were shutting down zimmerman's internet site. omara says the money is in a secure account that no one has access to. his family put up 10% of his $150,000 bond. a criminal defense attorney says the discovery of this money could put zimmerman back in jail. >> if you've got more money stashed in an account that basically you didn't earn and somebody just gave it to you

and you could just pay the bond and be gone, that gives a lot of judges concern. reporter: this morning's hearing was originally scheduled to discuss issues about unsealing zimmerman's criminal file, but the money issue could overshadow that. linda stow, abc 2 news. here in maryland another case involving a teenager getting national attention after an arrest made a year after a young girl's disappearance. family members for felicia barnes say they suspect in her murder that the suspects, rather, michael johnson is no stranger to the family. they said he'd be dating barnes' step sister for about eight years, even going on trips with alisha and the family. the family says they suspected him from the time felicia first disappeared, but they've been patient, allowing investigators to do their work. >> everyday i get up and this is what i think about, this day right here when someone is finally brought to justice for the murder of felicia. >> today the state's attorney's office will ask for an indictment to be opened. right now that indictment is

sealed. you can read more about this case and see timelines of the events and more about the investigation, go to our website, abc2news.com. all you need to do is click on the year and you can follow the 16-month-old case. all background video and information waiting for you once again abc2news.com. the mother of cockiesville native yeardley love has filed a $30.5 million lawsuit against the man who murdered her daughter. love was murdered by her boyfriend george huguely in charlottesville two years ago. in part of that lawsuit, sharon love says huguely acted with such indifference to love that his conduct constituted an utter discard of caution amounting to complete neglect for love. george huguely is scheduled to be sentenced in august. the jury has recommended a 26- year prison sentence in that case. new for you this morning, the department of defense has announced the beginning may 14th military jobs will be opening for women who were not previously allowed. some of those could include

direct ground combat units. it's all part of a military now taking steps of becoming more female friendly. this could include more than 1400 new positions. and this weekend the national cathedral will begin offering tours of its unique stone carvings. this will be happening for the first time since this building was damaged by the earthquake. that was last year in august. the tourists will explore more garg oil garg oils on the theater. there is now a deadline looming for any student needing to taiblg out a government subsidized loan. the rate is set to double. sheree is standing by this morning with all new information for you. reporter: charley, today the house is expected to vote on a gop bill that would prevent interest rates on federal student loans from doubling as of july 1st. president barack obama has appeared on three college campuses this week, calling to keep the rates down. students are worried about paying for those student loans. the interest rates will impact

more than 7 million undergraduates if congress does not act. the current interest raid on federally-subsidized students loans will increase from 3.4% to 6.8%. for students borrowing the maximum $23,000, it'll cost them an extra $5,000 over a 10- year repayment period. the nonpartisan congressional budget office says extending it will cost the government 5.8 billion and they say that's just too high. >> at this make-or-break moment for the middle class, we've gotta make sure you're not saddled with debt before you even get started. >> when you look at 50% of the kids coming out of college today can't find a job or can't find a job which is consistent with their skills, how in the world can you be supporting a president that's led to that kind of an economy? reporter: now, what happens on or before july 1st could determine which way students vote on november 6th. sheree johnson, abc 2 news. and today nasa, new york's

welcome back. the community of henryville, indiana is now working to rebuild after those deadly tornadoes last month.

a waste disposal and recycling company has donated 10,000 trees to replace the ones that have been destroyed. right now the focus is on finishing the school construction. once that's done, the trees will be planted. it is set to be finished, though, in early august. and today alabama governor robert bentley will participate in a prayer service, remembering the 47 people killed a year ago when a tornado ripped through tuscaloosa. you may remember this scene when that tornado hit on this day one year ago. a ceremony is is taking place at the university of alabama. more on that as the day progresses. time now for a check of the forecast. let's go over to lynette. >> most of the active weather is up in the northern plains right now. we're seeing some showers and some storms there. but we should be dry as we go through the remainder of today. so make sure you have those sun shades out there. you can put that rain gear away. speaking of the rain, yesterday we got .29 inches of rain, so close to .30 inches of rainfall. we're knocking that deficit down and we'll do it even more as we go into the weekend. right now temperatures are cool

this morning. good morning, towson, you're at 46 degrees right now, 50 in sparrow's point. we have those wind gusts up to about 30 miles in sparrow's point and ellicott city coming in at 23 mile per hour wind gusts. i'll talk more about this and how it holds up for the weekend. now let's get a check of traffic with greg. reporter: we start with 95, wrapping up road work at white marsh and the 895 split. more concern in downtown because southbound 95 at 295, you get by single file to the right. that's right. three left lanes blocked by the road work. we're told it's supposed to be there until the top of the hour. northbound was north of bwi, 195, that should be gone. the harbor tunnel, northbound tunnel has been closed overnight, it's being normalized to join the southbound tunnel and the rush. the outer loop between york and charles was the only thing we had outstanding as far as construction is concerned. looking good all the way around ond the inner loop. 83 southbound at reductionton, road work wrapping up.

died. we know they had the flu. new findings show detergents may be doing more than just cleaning your clothes. it may expose you to a cancer- causing chemical. that's according to a report from the "new york times." that detergent contains trace amounts of dioxane. the food administration says the chemical may cause cancer in lab rats. the company has been asked to change the formula for its detergent. a study now finds that anxiety-prone mice developed more severe mice than calmer ones. the mice were exposed to ultravielet rays for spending too much time in the sun. the anxious mice had more tumors and were the only ones developing invasive forms of cancer. next up researchers will be looking at whether reducing stress can increase the benefits of overall cancer treatment. we're giving you another reason to pile on those blueberries for your morning cereal. the fruit isn't just high in antioxidants.

now a study says it boosts your brain power. the study included 16,000 women over the age of 70. those who ate the most blueberries and strawberries had a slower rate of developing memory problems. looking ahead on monday, the accused shooter in california will be in court. one goh is expected to be in a courtroom. we'll bring you information as it becomes available. a catholic high school student in pennsylvania has been banned from attending prom because she doesn't have a date. amanda dougherty has shelled out nearly $1,000 for the dress, the shoes, the tickets and now school administrators say she can't go. her date backed out at the last minute and the school told her she couldn't go alone. it's all because of the rule the archdiocese says they can't go alone. >> unless we are -- we're not good enough to go unless we have a guy standing next to us, it's kind of sickening.

now 16 miles per hour out of the northwest. more of the same in easton. d.c. coming in right around 10 and close to 10 in york, pennsylvania. and, again, these are sustained winds. we'll see gusts today up to maybe 30 miles an hour. so with the sustained winds, we do have a wind chill, a slight wind chill. 47 degrees is what it feels like in baltimore right now and it feels like 49 in easton, feels like 39 degrees in hagueerstown right now. satellite and radar not bick -- picking up on a whole lot. lots of sunshine will rule the roost for today. high pressure is is going to build in behind this cold front that's already beginning to pass through the area and you can already tell that because the winds are changing out of the northwest as of now. we had that rain in here. that's pretty much gone for today, but future trend picking up on the rain pushing back in as we head into tomorrow afternoon. you can see that maybe around 4:00, 5:00 and that will continue even as we go into sunday morning, and then it gets out of here. so 50/50 looking type of

news time 4:56. a military judge has refused to dismiss the most serious charge against army private bradley manning. this case ongoing here in

maryland. he's accused of leaking classified documents to the site wikileaks. a judge ruled against a defense motion to dismiss the charges of aiding the enemy. those charges carry a maximum penalty of life in pretty much. the defense claims that manning didn't intend to help al-qaida when he sent the information to that website. and they're still dealing with the prostitution scandal after a trip to colombia. now new allegations have surfaced. the secret service agency is now investigating whether its agents hired strippers and prostitutes in advance of the president's trip to elsalvador last year. officials said the snept in colombia was isolated -- incident in colombia was isolated. now they're investigating incidents of unprofessional behavior in other reports. if you're traveling by air over the next several days, expect to be beefed up. new intelligence now suggests that al-qaida may be plotting attacks leading up to the anniversary of osama bin laden's death. his compound was raided in pakistan on may 2nd last year. officials are keeping a close eye on the al-qaida group in yemen. >> it doesn't take a great number of people to do the kind
