up to about 25 to 30 miles an hour. let's get a check now of the traffic with bill. good morning. reporter: no real problems as you head down 95 southbound past the white marsh mall. you can see some building traffic there as you continue past the beltway and on to 895 south of odonell street, see some light traffic and it's that way with both of the tunnels in the background you can see 95 building a bit. but no real problems or delays. 95 northbound coming up from the colombia area, everything looking good. no real problems or delays around the baltimore 0 beltway. i-70 looking good, 795 and as you come down from the state line in pennsylvania all the way past parkton and down the harrisburg expressway, everything is traveling pretty smoothly. let's keep it that way. now back to you. news time now 5:31. a deadline looming for any student with the need to take out a government-subsidized loan for the upcoming government academic year. the rate is set to double and this means college degrees will cost thousands more. abc 2 news' sherree johnson is here with all new information

for you on this friday. sheree. reporter: charply, in a few hours the house is expected to vote on a tbop bill that would prevent interest rates on federal student loans from doubling as of july 1st. president barack obama visited three college campuses this week, calling to keep the rates down. if congress does not act, the current interest rate on federally-subsidized student loans will jump from 3.4% to 6.8%. now, for students borrowing the maximum $23,000, it'll cost them about an extra $5,000 over a 10-year repayment period. now, the nonpartisan congressional budget office says extending the rate will cost the government $5.8 billion and that's too high. now, students are worried about paying for student loans. student loan interest rates will impact more than 7 million undergraduates. >> it definitely makes my anxiety go up several notches. >> at this make-or-break moment for the middle class, we've gotta make sure that you're not saddled with debt before you

even get started. reporter: now what happens on or before july 1st could determine which way students will vote on november 6th. sheree johnson, abc 2 news. taking a look at news around the nation this morning, a teenager is behind bars accused of attacking and robbing two old ladies. take a look at this video. he stole a purse from an 84- year-old woman in boak a raton, knocking her sister down in the process. he did escape. his father is the one who turned him in to police. passengers on a quarantined delta plane are all at their destinations this morning. they were kept on board a delta flight in chicago because of a suspected case of monkey pox. passengers were allowed off the plane after officials determined it was not a contagious illness. a passenger in question had a rash, but it turns out it may have been bed bugs. here's our story of the day, one you will be talking about and maybe even scratching your head. a catholic high school student in pennsylvania has been banned from going to her junior prom

because she doesn't have a date. amanda dougherty has now been gearing up for this prom, she's already spent thousands of dollars on the dress, the shoes and the tickets. but when her date suddenly backed out, she was told by school administrators she wasn't allowed to go alone. it's a rule by the archdiocese of philadelphia banning students from going to the dance without a date. >> for them to say that we're not good enough to go unless we have a guy standing next to us, it's just kind of sickening. >> the school said they viewed the prom as a special social event where a date is required to attend. dougherty says she will fight to get that policy changed. that dance is tonight. so, of course, we want to know what you think about this. is it fair for a school to require a student to bring a date. enter our facebook fan page, weigh in, abc2news.com/facebook. time-lapsed video this morning shows the progress of the 1 world trade center in new york. the skyscraper is being built at a pace of 1.4 per week. this gives us a quick time look

welcome back. former secretary of state madeleine albright will receive the nation's highest civilian honor. president obama will award her the presidential medal of freedom. albright was the first woman named secretary of state serving under former president bill clinton. other recipients of this year's meddle of freedom include pat summitt, former university of tennessee women's basketball coach and jan carskey who was one of the first to give accounts of the holocaust to the outside world. it is shaping up to be a star-studded event in washington d.c. the white house correspondents' dinner is is taking place tomorrow night. jimmy kimel will headline the event. we're giving you a safe way to toss out your old documents without risking

warrior project whichelps injured servicemembers. students have been very busy this week organizing that event. not only will students participate in the run/walk, but they're also -- there are also volunteers behind the scenes as well putting this race on. they gathered sponsorships to help with the cost and picked up gift cards to raffle off at the race. some students have family members in the military and others just want to give back to those who sacrifice so much for our country. >> it's so important because we have so many people in the military and it affects everyone and that's the main reason why we're still such a great country. reporter: now, this is a catholic high school for girls. the run/walk will be held saturday at 8:00 at patasco state park. head to the hilton area at 1101 hilton avenue in kateensville. the event is open to the public and you can find the story on our website at abc2news.com under the education tab. sheree johnson, abc 2 news.

in annapolis today, a group says they're going to host its first standing the races event in the area. they're going to form a human chain on the college creek bridge. the event will happen at noon and sponsored by the ymca and the wyca. a former teacher at glen burnie high school is expected to be sentenced today on sexual abuse charges. 29-year-old jeffrey sears was arrested last december after authorities say he had inappropriate sexual relations with three of his students. those students range in age from 15 to 16. wegmans wants to save you money this summer. the grocery chain is now putting a price freeze on more than 60 items starting sunday. those items are in everyday sections of the store and include everything from produce to meat to medicine. it runs through august 25th and the price freeze follows a similar one that was held during the winter months. we posted a complete list of all of those items that are going to remain at the same price at our website, abc2news.com. you can find that within our slide show.

pick of the nfl draft to the minnesota vikings, leaving ozzie newsome and the crew without a first round selection for the second time in three years. in exchange for that pick, baltimore picked up minnesota's second and fourth round selections. two years ago the raven's gm received three picks from denver for their overall 25th pick. as expected, andrew luck was taken overall to the indianapolis colts, robert griffin, iii, he went to d.c. to the redskins. luck will be introduced today at an event at lucas oil stadium where he will be rolled out as the new colts quarterback. the baltimore orioles now riding high on the weekend series going into the oakland a's, this after a three-game sweep of the toronto blue jays. adam joneses and chris davis bringing homes late, breaking a 2-2 tie with a little bit of room to shore up that 5-2 victory. brian matice had his best outing of the night, two runs through six innings of work.

the season is now in full swing already, but fans who want to watch for tickets 2 to a very special game. that's coming up this weekend. the first is is tomorrow. it's a sculpture of one of the great birds of all time, frank robinson making his debut. that sculpture is going to be unveiled tomorrow around 5:15, we were there live yesterday, but, again, that event is tomorrow night. other orioles being honored include brooks robinson, jim palmer, earl weaver and cal ripken, junior, all getting the bronze treatment. we love the fact that they're being kept a secret until the actual unveil. we think fans are going to be excited and surprised but pleasantly surprised when they see the end result. >> of course that would be eddie murray. each fan who attends saturday's game will get the exact miniature replica of that sculpture. when it comes to buying booze at the ballpark, you know it's going to cost ya, but which stadium has the most expensive beer? it's not camden yards. we come in at 9th now, tied

with the l.a. dodgers for the small beer costing $6.25. for the top five, you've got the chicago cubs, they charge $7, the blue jays charge $7.19. that's a rough estimate given exchange rates. and the miami marlins are number one, $800 for a 16-ounce beer. lynette. let's talk about the weather right now, charley, because we are looking pretty windy this morning. that will continue even as we go into the afternoon. right now we're looking at sustained winds at about five to 15 miles an hour. we can see that in d.c. right now. baltimore coming in at 12, 16 in easton along the eastern shore this morning, and 14 over in fredrick. so with that we do have a slight wind chill. it feels more like 44 degrees out there in baltimore and 47 in easton. it feels like 38 in fredrick and also hagerstown. so you'll need that jacket as you step out and about this morning. and maybe even as you go into the afternoon because those

winds are going to make it feel a little bit chillier out there. satellite and radar picking up on mainly clear skies right now. we will get plenty of sunshine in here mixing with a few clouds as we go throughout the day because high pressure is going to do its thing. building in behind this system, this cold front that's passed through the area. but then we look at this area of low pressure and the difference between the high pressure and the low pressure, well, that's why we're seeing and feeling those windy conditions for today. now future trend seeing that we are clear, but we will start to see a new system work its way in here for saturday, so we will have the rain. the good news is get out and about early because the wet wh works its way in here for the second part of the day, and then it gets out of here for the second part of the weekend. we have a 50/50 weekend on tap for us. today's temperature right around 62 degrees, mostly sunny and windy. and then by tonight temperature coming in at 38 degrees, increasing clouds and chilly. so with the chilliness, while they do have a freeze watch to the north, so york, pennsylvania, you are under that. it's in effect late tonight until tomorrow morning.

and here to check -- here's a check of that game at a forecast for you, first pitch at 7:05, 55 degrees. partly cloudy our biggest concern, just a bit breezy with the winds out of the northwest at 10 to 15. let's get a check of the traffic with bill. good morning. reporter: seeing heavy traffic around route 100, bw parkway and 95 looking good the rest of the way up, though. as you can see on 695 at the bw parkway, light traffic, everything looking good at this point. west side of the beltway seeing building around the i-70 area. i-70 itself looking good, though. and the 795 run also everything at speed there. heading down from pennsylvania on 83, the harrisburg expressway, pretty much at speed with no delays or problems. and looking good on the jfx, no delays due to that construction just yet. we'll let you know when that starts. also on the 95 run heading down past white marsh mall, a little bit of heavy traffic as you pass through the mall, the beltway and on to the 895 split. no accidents and everything looking pretty good. now back to you. is is your medicine
