tv   Right This Minute  ABC  May 3, 2012 4:30pm-5:00pm EDT

4:30 pm
hi, everyone. i'm beth troutman. it's time for some great videos, "right this minute." a woman is robbed in a parking lot. but the robber didn't see the hero nearby. >> he ran straight to the thief and tackled her. >> oh, he took her down like he was a linebacker. >> meet the right guy at the right time. remember that bird strike video? well, now the guy who shot it -- >> has now been issued a warning from the faa. >> hear why he is not happy. >> i'm not taking the plane down, birds are. we've also got an o orangut to pull some sneaky moves to get this coat on. and some friends are kicking back when a guy steals their
4:31 pm
pbr -- >> at knife point. >> but it's what the cops did after that may be the real crime. >> we're like, eh, what a shame, what a shame. it's time to get our show started. christian has our first story. >> 65-year-old marine whitely is so grateful for shawn cox. >> i really, really appreciate you helping me. not many people would do that. >> in this video that we found on wp tv, we see marie loading up groceries in her truck. when she is doing so, she is approached by a woman holding a knife saying -- >> i don't want to hurt you, but i'm going to steal your purse. >> so she grabs her purse and starts running away. marie, of course, yells out "my purse just got stolen" so pay very close attention to this part of the video. shawn, standing by his car, hears marie yelling. he ran straight to the thief and tackled her. >> oh, he took her down like he was a linebacker! >> he took her out.
4:32 pm
>> shawn looks like a big boy. >> he is a big boy. in fact, he is an iraq war veteran. >> no wonder he wasn't scared about tackling somebody. he didn't know what kind of weapon that woman had, he just tackled her. >> it was instinct. remember, i said she was holding a knife. when he tackled her, she ended up stabbing him in the neck, look. >> oh, whoa! >> man, he got lucky. that's so close to his veins and his jugular. >> he ended up needing nine stitches, but fortunately he is okay. this robber did end up running away with the purse. >> have they found this woman who stole the purse? >> no. they're hoping somebody recognizes her from this video. they think she's about 50 years old and she did have a tribal tattoo. she was wearing a orange shirt and got away in a dodge truck. >> we have to thank him for his service and then we have to thank him for his service to this woman. back on april 19th when a delta airlines flight flying from jfk in new york to los angeles had to turn around and
4:33 pm
make an emergency landing back internatna airport, "right this minute" was the first to link to the video that caused the problem. you guys remember this. it showed birds running into the engine and causing the engine to malfunction, leading to the emergency landing. this video was shot by a passenger inside the flight, grant cardone. since that time, grant has been issued a warning from the faa. why? because he was using an electronic device during flight. in the letter from the faa to grant cardone, they said in lieu of legal enforcement action or a civil penalty, we are issuing this letter which will be made a matter of record for a period of two years after which the record will be expunged. to talk to us more about this, we've got grant cardone joining us from los angeles, california. how do you respond to a warning like this? what does this exactly mean? >> i don't know how you respond to it and i don't actually know
4:34 pm
what it means. they're not after me to do anything to fix it, to solve the problem. >> they clearly tell you at the beginning of flight on any flight that you fly, turn everything off. so that shouldn't be a surprise to you that you got this warning. >> no, no. actually they do tell you before each flight, everybody knows that's the rule. while i'm not suggesting i'm above the law or anybody should be, what i'm saying is if mobile devices are a threat to aviation, they should be banned. i'm not taking the plane are, birds are. >> are you also arguing that, yeah acti yeah, your plane was having trouble. maybe you were turning on your device to contact someone. >> absolutely i was. do i care about the faa at that moment? sorry. >> so is this going to affect your ability to fly? are you on a no-fly list because of this? >> good question. are they going to hang me up, delay me at the airport? i'll know next week when i fly back to jfk. right now i don't know, are they
4:35 pm
going to give me a cavity search? i don't know what they're going to do. los angeles police are looking for an occupy protester because of an incident that was captured on camera and posted on youtube. protesters were marching on mayday and they came in contact with some police officers. watch closely what happens. one protester steps behind this smaller female cop. >> oh! >> smacks her in the back of the head with what looked to be a metal snare drum. the person that uploaded this video said the police were blocking the protesters in a spot where they shouldn't have been blocked. they were supposed to be marching down this street. police say, no, the protesters moved to an area that was not designated for marching and that's why this clash happened. but that officer was sent to the hospital with a concussion. >> who throws a snare drum to hit an officer? >> yeah, especially you're a guy and it's a female officer too.
4:36 pm
i mean you're real tough. come up from behind somebody, and it's a woman. >> he must have really hit her hard in order to give her a concussion and she had a helmet on. >> what he may have thought was simple civil disobedience, police are considering this assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer. so that's a pretty heavy charge. >> oh, he looks like a young guy. >> yeah, he does look like a pretty young guy. >> police did track down a suspect in this case and were holding him for questioning on wednesday. take a look at this video from a target in orlando, florida. this footage was just released by the orlando police department. >> pay close attention to these women right here at the top of your screen. >> what? >> oh! >> she did like a drive-by pepper spray job. >> that's exactly what they did. four women and one man ran out of target carrying tons and tons of baby clothes, pepper sprayed a target employee who looked like he was trying to stop them
4:37 pm
and fled the scene with all of the merchandise. >> so they did this premeditated. they were stealing stuff and then thought, okay, anybody who tries to stop us -- >> that's exactly right. this happened on saturday night. and the pepper spray forced an entire evacuation of the target store after this happened. >> what goes through people's minds? you're going to go into a target and steal babies clothes. >> and then take those clothes and put them on your baby at home and say you look so cute in these items that i stole from target using pepper spray. >> police released this so they can identify these people and arrest them. >> that would have been suspicious that you have arms full of stuff and never get a basket. if there's one store with plenty of baskets, it's target. have you ever seen a target run out of shopping baskets? that should have been a clue. ding, ding, ding, ding, they're not using a basket. >> be on the lookout for people stealing baby clothes.
4:38 pm
you would want to do this. it looks great, it looks fun. >> an adventure with not so much danger. and somebody stole this woman's beer. >> so she's like, man, buzz kill. >> no worries, this guy to the rescue. the story behind the video next.
4:39 pm
4:40 pm
she's the new jersey mom that lots of people in america are talking about. >> i love to tan. >> oh, my gosh. >> it's amazing every time. >> it looks like she has put some kind of dark foundation on her skin. >> cbs got patricia to talk about how much she enjoys tanning. >> it is obvious you tan a lot. >> yeah, i do. my whole life, though. >> she was arrested because police say she took her daughter, this beautiful fair-skinned redhead, into a tanning booth. she's saying it didn't happen, but that's got everybody talking about tanning. >> i want you guys to check out this website that's called
4:41 pm
waytotan and it features people who are like patricia. >> if that's your boyfriend and you're that girl, why don't you just say, hey, listen, knock it off. >> now, this is the website pale is the new tan and they have a collection of people who just seem to think that extreme tanning is their thing to do. >> like, like what? that person looks like a monster. >> that tlc show "my strange addiction," they have done a story on a woman who's an extreme tanner. >> i think about tanning 24/7. i think about tanning when i wake up, i think about tanning in the shower. >> i always wonder what these people think they should look like. >> my worst experience with tanning was when i actually came out of the tanning salon and i was completely bleeding through my back and my bottom because i burnt so bad my skin broke apart. >> that's an addiction, when you're bleeding from your back and your bottom and you still go
4:42 pm
in to tan. >> if you look like beth troutman, you should nt try to be my color. you guys are white, embrace it, that's okay. there's nothing wrong with being white. kayaking doesn't have to be the crazy, over the cliff water falls kind of stuff. you can have a nice serene paddle like the gearjunky.com crew had. they're paddling off the coast of lake superior, one of the largest freshwater lakes in the world. this whole expedition is sponsored by yakima. they're putting together five different off the map adventures. here they're exploring the sea caves. >> these cliffs were created when waves have pounded into these walls and formed caves and arches and cathedrals of stone. >> check out these sandstone caves as you get to poke in and out of. it's pretty stuff. >> this is so much better than doing it in the ocean sea caves
4:43 pm
because there are sharks. >> it's also much more calm too. you don't have the ocean waves. so these guys kind of have the run of the place just being able to duck in through all these different caves and arches. beautiful. >> you could do this, beth. you would want to do this. this looks great, it looks fun. >> the gear junky guys paddled about ten miles on this off-the-map trip. they have three other short documentaries coming up on their website on gearjunky.com. you know how i always have a hard time laughing at accidents, at other people's fails? >> yeah, you're a nice person. >> this is a fail that i found really funny. >> what is that? >> this is at the human powered vehicle competition in pennsylvania in grove city. this is the entry that a college did for this human powered vehicle competition. >> it looks like a streamlined bicycle. >> it's a weird-looking thing.
4:44 pm
you know something is about to go wrong. >> yeah. >> oh, no! >> he took a couple people out. >> fortunately, nobody was injured, and this vehicle went on to women the heat. >> oh, wow. >> well, if you're going to get in a bike wreck, you might was well have that shell that he's got. >> it looks lik some kind of plastic fish. >> it's so weird. >> and it was swimming like a fish on the road too. >> the guy inside the bike probably got less hurt than the people that he knocked over because at least he's covered in a protective casing. this orangutan found himself a lovely coat. >> what's he going to do with this coat? >> it looks like he's putting it on like a snuggie almost. and some dogs are off to school for a very important
4:45 pm
project. >> these dogs are being trained to help special needs kids. >> that is so cool. >> it's a fantastic idea. >> it is. hear all about it later on [ male announcer ] if you stash tissues

we are doing something very special in spanish fork high school in alabama to help some special needs kid. that black dog is a labradoodle. there is a goldendoodle and these dogs are being trained to help special needs kids. >> one of the really difficult things with training service dogs for children is getting the dogs in the environments that they need to be exposed to, like schools and in cafeterias and around a lot of other children. >> yeah, people talk about socializing their dogs with other dogs, but this is socializing dogs to be in a school environment, so that's lots of running around, lots of distractions. kids are going to be fascinated by the dog. so this is getting the dogs used to it. >> we knew that the students with autism would be greatly served by the therapy dogs coming in. we also knew that the dogs would benefit from being exposed to an environment full of sights, sounds and smells were were

4:57 pm
>> is that fair? is that allowed? >> apparently. >> check out what the sewer snake has. it has this little platform on the top there. it's purposes are twofold. if the other robot gets on top of this one, it uses that to catapult him off. secondly almost like an ax, chopper. halfway through the match you're seeing flames going everywhere. at one point the sewer snake gets the ragin' scottman in the corner and flips him over. >> he needs a spike on that little flip thing and beat him up. >> instead of just roasting him with fire, you could plant a little mini bomb on him and drive away and blow the thing up. >> i think the matches would be a lot short. when the match is over, you can hear the announcer say and your winner -- >> and the winner --! >> sewer snake! >> not exactly sure of the point
