let's check with lauren who has the abc2 time safer traffic good morning. >> reporter: good -- timesaver traffic good morning. >> reporter: we start off with a serious crash on the beltway. if you are traveling in the area, here's exactly what it looks like looking live. notice it's causing quite abackup. so expect a slow ride from 795 down to security boulevard. if you are traveling the beltway in parkville, no concerns on that outer loop from 95 up towards 83. your best stretch will take you 12 minutes. now if you are heading into the city, be aware of the construction that is ongoing on the jfx. it will shut down one lane in both directions at 28th street. no backups in the area as of yet. and traveling on 95, through the white marsh area, everything will be up to speed. looking at a nice easy ride only 16 minutes traveling from the beltway all the way to downtown baltimore. and everything up to speed through the fort mchenry tunnel and harbor tunnel. that's a look at your abc2 time

safer traffic now back over to you. the u.s. intelligence broke up a bomb plot to bring down a airline supposed to be headed for the u.s. linda so is here with details on the foiled plot and where official fouled the explosive device. they have seen this before. >> reporter: they have. and it's similar to a case that happened back in 2009. that device is in the hands of fbi. agents with the cia seized it in yemen after following a man who had not picked a target or bought a plane ticket. the intend user of the bomb is no longer a threat meaning the person could be dead or has been arrested. the fbi is now studying the device that is an improved version of the so-called underwear bomb that was used in a failed attempt to blow up an airliner on christmas day in 2009. the new bomb has a highly defined dead nation system meaning metal deteggors would have been ineffective and full body scanners may not have caught the device.

>> i have been told by people who are work on -- working on the case if it happened before september 11th it would have succeed. >> reporter: almost all airports use bomb sniffing dogs in random trace detection but security official worry terrorists are redesigning bombs to beat thosetactics. a teen is in custody charged with setting fires in and around columbia. police say the 18-year-old named richard mojica livens in an apartment complex near columbia mall. he had been setting the fires at apartments and at the mall for several weeks. early thursday morning a fire started at a loading dock outside the sears department store. smoke damage forced the store to close down over the weekend. investigators waited outside of the mall just before 1:30 sunday morning. they saw a man running from a burning dumbster and took him into custody. >> we were seeing cases in very close proximity and they were all around the columbia mall or in an apartment building very

close by. so our investigators knew where to look. >> mojica is charged in connection with six fires at his complex and mall. total damage at more than $400,000. online court records show also in march he was charged in howard county with having a concealed dangerous weapon on school property. and new this morning, pennsylvania prosecutors are changing the date they say former penn state football coach injury sandusky assaulted a bow -- jerry sandusky assaulted a boy in a shower. it was said to be in march 2002 now they changed it to february of 2001. the defense attorneys says that means the statutes of limitation on the charge against two penn state administrators for failure to report suspected child abuse there's -- they are saying the date expired and therefore the charge hud be dismissed. closures affecting jfx will. meteorologist lynette charles. >> all right. we are talking about some wet weather off toward the west of us as of now. but you know, what as we zoom in, we are dealing with mainly cloudy skies but we are starting to get a few peeks of sunshine and you are seeing the clouds break up. that's a good thing. we haven't seen the sun and we will take that. but as we check out the temperatures, well right now in manchester right around 55 degrees and we are looking at 58 degrees in -- at loch rain tech and winds at -- loch abeen tech. and -- raven tech. we are looking at coastal flood advisory in effect until noon and that's for all the areas here shaded in the bluish color. i will tell you when the next best chance for rain moves into the picture but let's check the traffic with lauren. >> reporter: good morning. we are dealing with heavy delays on the west side of the beltway due to a crash on outer loop at liberty road. and here's a live look. you will notice it's going to

be congested along outer loop. do expect very, very slow ride making the drive from 795 all the way down to interstate 70. if you are traveling on the harrisburg expressway, here's york road, not as much congestion as that west side of the beltway. it will be an easy ride pushing on 695. but once you get on the jfx, you want to watch out for all of the ongoing construction so one lane is shut down at 28th streetand falls street is not a bad alternate. 95 has everything up to speed inwhite marsh. we are in the green. no problems southbound. it's going to take 16 minutes from the beltway down to downtown baltimore. that's a look at your abc2 timesaver traffic now back over to you. students at hagertown high school are mourning the loss of two classmates killed in a car crash after prom. police say brandon colliflower was driving his date samantha

kelly back who her house when he crashed into a tree. he took the turn quickly and hit the tree head on. both teens died on impact. >> the front of the vehicle was destroyed because of the impact. it appears engine came back into the driver's portion of the vehicle and it was very severe. >> speed does appear to be a factor in the crash, police do say there are no signs of drugs or alcohol. a new warning this morning for parents of young drivers. teens are far more likely to die behind the wheel if they have other teenagers in the car with them. that's the finding of a new study released today by aaa. the auto club says the report found a 16 or 17-year-old driver was 44% more likely to die in a crash with one passenger under 21 years old. that is compared to driving alone. the study shows the numbers dropped when there's an adult in the car. you may want to think about

alternate routes traveling on the jfx. this morning, abc to news sherrie johnson is live at a construction project and road closures affecting you especially in the late night hours. >> reporter: that's right. we are here this morning along the jones falls expressway here where traffic is certainly picking up. folks make their way to work this morning. you should be prepared for moredelays heading this way. overnight closures of the jfx at 29th street will continue for about 2 more weeks. crews are working to replace a collapsed drainage pipe and work on erosion that could damage the road. during the closures, traffic will be routed on to the 28th street exit ramp. drivers can continue left on sison street and take a left on 29th street and get back on the jfx. once the full closures are lifted, the left lane in each direction will be off limits until the two million dollar project is completed. this means tuesday through friday, the northbound lanes will be closed from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. on saturday, lieu may 18, --

the two remaining presidential contenders. romney has a large lead. romney received a endorsement true e-mail from rick santorum. and president obam huh will -- obama will head to albany new york. they have been preparing days ahead of time. he will deliver remarks on the economy at a nearby college and then attend a gala event this evening. health news this morning. a new obesity report is set to be released today and the findings are alarming. abc2 news linda so is here with the details on what the next are gel -- numbers are going to tell us. >> reporter: more americans are getting fatter and fatterch the institute of medicine willrelease the report today at a conference hosted by the cdc. it suggest an additional 30 million americans will be obese by the year 2030. that's an in 18 years and with levels rising at that rate it would cost an additional $549.5 billion dollars in medical costs. the study suggest about 11% of americans will be severely

obese by 2030 meaning they would be 100 pounds overweight. the institute of medicine says more needs to be done faster to curb the rise obesity rates and the report will focus on strategies people can use to support healthy ways to lose weight. linda so, abc 2 news. news time is 6:51. even our pets are more overweight. the largest cat in the country died due to complications from his obesity. that cat named meow weighed 37 pounds like a person weighing 600 pounds. he just started a weight loss program. >> uner for thely we didn't have enough -- unfortunately, we didn't have enough time. cumulative toll all the weight took on his body caught up with him. >> the caretaker says the respiratory track started to fail and he died within 24 hours. the national cathedral is preparing to dedicate a carving of rosa parks. it will be used and live in the section of the church devote to human rights.
