didn't dare to expect. >> two kidnapped by a man who killed their mother and sister found alive. the break came overnight. >> abc's tahman bradley joins us with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, rob and sunny. afterty tense two-week manhunt police acted on a tip and s.w.a.t. moved in and the two girls in the woods. remarkably these little girls after all they went through appear to be unharmed. the massive manhunt to find alexandria and kyliyah bain ended with the two little girls found alive. >> when i seen those kids, they was -- it was a huge relief. >> reporter: they are suspected kidnapper adam mayes who had been on the run from the fbi was found in the woods behind this church in guntown, mississippi. >> preliminary reports indicate he shot himself in the head and was later pronounced dead at an area hospital. >> reporter: overnight they were treated at a local hospital. they appear unharmed although they were hungry and dehydrated. mayes, a former brother-in-law

to the bain family, was at the tennessee home of the little girls the night they disappeared. police say mayes kidnapped alexandria and kyliyah when he killed their mother jo ann bain and 14-year-old sister adrienne. their bodies found buried outside his home charged with first degree murder and aggravated kidnapping. authorities believe mayes drove the little girls and the dead bodies to this trailer where he lived. the fbi says mayes' motives remain unclear but he may have thought the little girls were his kids. >> there was two little girls that he was just absolutely obsessed with. he was claiming that those two children were his. >> made us all think that was his kids. >> reporter: investigators believe mayes had help. his mother mary mayes and his ex-wife teresa ann mayes charged with four counts of conspiracy si to commit aggravated kidnapping. teresa has confessed mayes killed jo ann and adrienne.

after their stay in the hospital alexandria and kyliyah will be returned home to the care of their father. rob and sunny. >> as good an ending we could hope for. tahman bradley live in washington. thanks. turning now to presidential politics. mitt romney is on the defensive on something in his distant past. >> he has apologized for what he calls stupid high school pranks which may have targeted a gay classmate. david muir has the latest. >> reporter: one of mitt romney's former high school classmates at the prestigious cranbrook school was supreme bullying and they acted like a pack of dogs. that classmate, phillip maxwell, now a lawyer offered more an a scene reported by "the washington post" telling abc news that mitt romney was part of a group of students that who targeted a boy who most thought was gay and who dyed his long hair blond with peroxide. it's a haunting memory, he said.

i think it's a haunting memory. i think it was for everybody and you see that look in their eye, you never forget it. he and romney were among the boys who held the student down. i had an arm and leg. he was pinned down by the state champion wrestler, the captain of the football team. this was bullying supreme. maxwell says romney was holding the scissors, i saw with my own eyes, it was a hack job. clumps of hair taken off. mitt romney was asked about the account first reported in "the washington post." >> i had no idea what that individual's sexual orientation might be. going back to the 1960s that wasn't something that we all discussed. i don't recall the incident myself but i've seen the reports and not going to argue with that. there's no question but that i did some stupid things when i was in high school and obviously if i hurt anyone by virtue of that, i would be very sorry for it and apologize for it. >> reporter: meantime, another romney classmate came to romney's defense saying he did not witness the event but had a

largest bank said it guessed wrong on a major trading bet and lost $2 billion in the past six weeks. the ceo blames "error, slopness and bad judgment" but says jpmorganchase remains profitable despite that loss. not the case for the postal service reporting a first quarter loss of $3.2 billion, one billion more than the same time last year. it's running out of cash and without help from congress may default on health benefit payments next fall. americans are spending more on mom this year. one survey predicts we'll be shelling out about 8% more on everything from flowers and cards to electronics like e-readers and tablets. on average we'll each be spending $153 for the holiday. asian measures off after that bad news from j.p. morgan chase. tokyo's nikkei average lost 46 points. hong kong's hang seng was down

morning, vice president joe biden has now apologized to president obama for coming out in favor of same-sex marriage before the president did. >> in an interview on sunday biden said he was absolutely comfortable with gay couples getting married. well, those comments forced the president to speed up his own public endorsement. we're told the president accepted the vice president's apology shortly before he sat down for his exclusive interview with "good morning america's" robin roberts yesterday. >> joe being joe. well, the president's historic embrace of same-sex marriage has unleashed a new influx of campaign cash most notably at last night's star-studded hollywood fund raiser. this morning his coffers are fatter by $15 million, a record for a single fund-raiser. george clooney hosted the shindig at his home and the president joked all that came pouring in not because they like him but because they love george. well, a pile of federal health add advisers endorsed the first drug shown to prevent hiv
