didn't dare to expect. >> two kidnapped by a man who killed their mother and sister found alive. the break came overnight. >> abc's tahman bradley joins us with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, rob and sunny. afterty tense two-week manhunt police acted on a tip and s.w.a.t. moved in and the two girls in the woods. remarkably these little girls after all they went through appear to be unharmed. the massive manhunt to find alexandria and kyliyah bain ended with the two little girls found alive. >> when i seen those kids, they was -- it was a huge relief. >> reporter: they are suspected kidnapper adam mayes who had been on the run from the fbi was found in the woods behind this church in guntown, mississippi. >> preliminary reports indicate he shot himself in the head and was later pronounced dead at an area hospital. >> reporter: overnight they were treated at a local hospital. they appear unharmed although they were hungry and dehydrated. mayes, a former brother-in-law

to the bain family, was at the tennessee home of the little girls the night they disappeared. police say mayes kidnapped alexandria and kyliyah when he killed their mother jo ann bain and 14-year-old sister adrienne. their bodies found buried outside his home charged with first degree murder and aggravated kidnapping. authorities believe mayes drove the little girls and the dead bodies to this trailer where he lived. the fbi says mayes' motives remain unclear but he may have thought the little girls were his kids. >> there was two little girls that he was just absolutely obsessed with. he was claiming that those two children were his. >> made us all think that was his kids. >> reporter: investigators believe mayes had help. his mother mary mayes and his ex-wife teresa ann mayes charged with four counts of conspiracy si to commit aggravated kidnapping. teresa has confessed mayes killed jo ann and adrienne.

after their stay in the hospital alexandria and kyliyah will be returned home to the care of their father. rob and sunny. >> as good an ending we could hope for. tahman bradley live in washington. thanks. turning now to presidential politics. mitt romney is on the defensive on something in his distant past. >> he has apologized for what he calls stupid high school pranks which may have targeted a gay classmate. david muir has the latest. >> reporter: one of mitt romney's former high school classmates at the prestigious cranbrook school was supreme bullying and they acted like a pack of dogs. that classmate, phillip maxwell, now a lawyer offered more an a scene reported by "the washington post" telling abc news that mitt romney was part of a group of students that who targeted a boy who most thought was gay and who dyed his long hair blond with peroxide. it's a haunting memory, he said.
