so a warm evening in the upper 70s. we'll talk about how much hot are it will be by memorial day. it is the third leading cause of death in the united states and the most avoidable. a study from johns hopkins it looks at accidental deaths. roosevelt leftwich joins us with more. >> reporter: this latest study took 10 years of data in 10 different areas to prevent it. these are laws that some folks hate or find invice-presidential but the laws -- inconvenient but the laws are saving lives. there are many ways to die. bikers without helmets or a drunk who got behind the wheel. he can die in the park falling off the bike with no helmet. if you live in maryland, new jersey or california, you're

likely not to die if you just obey the law. >> there were 10 indicators. the majority of states had half or fewer and only the two states that you mentioned had nine out of 10 but maryland was right behind that with eight out of 10, so it does say that maryland is progressive in terms of having the kinds of policies in place that can protect people. >> reporter: the hopkins center studied all 5 states in 10 -- 50 states in all 10 categories. the lowest accident fatality rate for 100,000 people was in new jersey with nine out of the 10 indicators. new mexico with seven out of the 10 had the the-- 97 deaths per 100. others had avoidable injuries.

13-year-old boy who fell over a 270-foot water fall in washington state. jamie costello joins us with more. >> reporter: william hickman held on it a narrow shelf for more than eight hours before rest cures pulled him in to safety. you can see the 13-year-old clinging to that tiny edge, the ledge at the top of the falls as the family watched. swept over the water fall and down he went. hickman said he was worried that time was running out. >> the water started ride rising -- rising. the first thing i saw was the helicopter. i was so happy. i started crying. >> the search and rescue team put a 20 food ladder -- foot

to an end with the cof voted mirror balled trophy just within refer. last night each pair tackled two dances. one a judge's pick and the other a free style. the winner is anybody's call, william levy and cheryl burke had the cha cha. donald driver and peta murgatroyd melted the judges. but it was classical singer katherine jenkins and mark ballas who wowed with their latin infused paso, with a perfect score. all season week after week, those eliminations, some predictable. martina navratilova probably had better moves on the court than

mind. we'll talk about the weather each and every day, multiple posts. if we see cool photos, post them there. maryland's most powerful radar. most of the active weather in virginia but in central maryland not much, a couple showers well west of hagerstown. right now temperatures running in the mid-70s. cooler in ocean city but humid conditions all across the state. the dry spot is the inner harbor but most spots seeing humidity north of 70%. the relative humidity will go up. showers to the west. the more significant weather has been offshore but to our north and what was once tropical storm alberto, a very weak marginal tropical storm, now nothing. being drawn into upper air flow and alberto is gone. no more alberto. we'll look for more humid and warm conditions over the next day or two. they will be dealing with similar weather conditions.
