burglars smashed glass doors and almost a dozen businesses before making off with the cash. jeff hager joins us with the latest. jeff, what do you have? >> reporter: the term smash and grab may suggest that it's random. they knew what they were doing and they've done it before. they moved indiscriminately door to door, smashing the glass and looking for cash. this is the third time in the past year burglars have hit the qdoba restaurant. a hair salon, tanning salon and boxing club. they let six others in the wee hours of the morning. >> they canvassed other business. >> reporter: most of the

businesses have security systems but we're told surveillance video from one store showed the burglars strategically breaking in, crawling on the floor to reach the cash register without sounding the alarm. >> they break the glass. we're going to follow-up to put sensors on this stuff. >> reporter: we're told that same security footage revealed the burglars wearing hoods and surgical gloves on their hands to keep from leaving fingerprints. >> broke the register open, took cash, was pretty good. didn't leave a trail. >> police is asking anyone with information to call. you do not have to identify

yourself. jeff hager, abc2 news. two were threed and three were -- killed and three were injured in the seattle university district. during that call police got a call for another shooting. they said a woman was wounded in the second incident but are not sure if the shootings are related. no arrests have been made so far in either incident. tonight baltimore county police are looking for this man. he's facing first-degree murder charges in what appears to be a domestic dispute. police were called to a vehicle fire on may 26th. after the fire was out, they discovered a man's body inside the truck. the victim, daryl augustus ii, had been reported missing the day b investigators believe augustus was visiting a woman in

the apartment unit. according to police, len nell ellis found the victim and the woman there. police believe adpus toc was -- augustus was killed in the apartment and moved to the mitchell road area. anyone with information call the number on your screen. we've learned funeral arrangements have been made for the towson student hit and killed. he died monday morning after being hit by a car. his funeral mass will be friday. meanwhile, the car suspected in the crash is in the worcester county jail. a 30-year-old is expected to appear in court on july 5th. the community is coming together to help a harford

county family who lost their home in a fire. the family got out safely but their home was destroyed. investigators are still searching for a cause tonight. meanwhile, a friend said in you want to help out, you can drop off items at the fire department. the family needs everything from clothes to furniture. >> all right. weather wise it's been quiet around baltimore. in fact, take a look you can see what is left of tropical depression beryl, actually reorganizing. we have winds gusting to 40s and virginia beach. that is sending some rain in worcester county and southeastern maryland. otherwise, we have clearing from west to east. we'll slowly fall through the 70s. we'll talk about how temperatures will be very pleasant for another day or so and our next storm approaches by friday. it's all coming up. we have new video coming

from mile mile after that shocking attack yesterday. police said a naked man attacked another naked man and ate his face, possibly because he was high on bath salts. experts said the dangerous drug is getting even more scary. >> reporter: bath salts started as a form of synthetic cocaine but experts say it could be morphing to something different on the streets. it shows police stepping in as the suspect, 30-year-old rudy eugene, chews on the face of a homeless man. police officers said they had to shoot eugene to get him to stop because he may have been high on bath salts and was like a zombie. they believe chemists are tweaking the bath salts and they may be tainted with pcp, which

educating future leaders. now they're focusing on leadership for girls. sherrie johnson has more. >> reporter: these young ladies are learning what it takes to be a leader. the goal is to engage them in discussions and conversations and several forums on a variety of topics. >> we believe in order for them to develop fully as human beings, leaders in a global economy, we want our girls to be ready to compete. >> reporter: leadership makes other academies stand out. the girls set goals, learn a value system and focus on ac dem mikes it prepared me for life. not only can adult women be very confident in what they do, but

also it reflects on young women and shows you don't always have to be an adult to make a difference. the classroom is filled with pictures of leaders from condoleezza rice, the first female african-american secretary of state and the first african-american astronaut, female leaders to inspire and show that leadership is about overcoming adversity. >> i think this program has helped to empower me and helped me feel more confident and independent. >> reporter: some students have already put what they've learned to the test. >> more recently, probably about two weeks ago i went to the outdoor school, and i helped them make the decision to make sure they followed the rules. so it has taught others too, so

sunshine. dundalk, fairly persist tent cloud cover. some improvement late in the day as we see late day clearing. one last stop in ocean city where the rain did come down. this is because of the beach getting clipped by the very outer edge of what is left of tropical depression beryl which is restrengthening. see the showers down at the maryland beaches, beginning to clear out, but all part of this larger system which is swirling, just around nags head, north carolina. that is the system, the tropical storm that made landfall all the way down into north florida days ago. now coming up the east coast and strengthening, but not having an impact on maryland. meet logically, that's an interesting storm there, beryl s low 80s across the board. there have been rain showers. drier air is drifting in. humidity is dropping. it's going to mean a comfortable

night and into the early part of the morning tomorrow you may be able to turn off the ac and let the windows come on. low 80s for temperatures across the central part of the state as sunshine mixes with clouds. it's going to be a good looking day. there's beryl screaming off the coast of the carolinas and clipping virginia coastal maryland. to the west not a lot of new weather. we expect that to change. beryl will touse to head out to see sea. it may gain tropical storm strength. to the west we watch with interest as we go through the day tomorrow under a nice clear sky. really no concern. here's beryl offshore perhaps strengthening to a tropical storm but moving away from land. as we go from thursday into the friday time frame, this next boundary begins to line up and

push. this could mean showers, maybe a thunder shower as well by the time we get into friday afternoon, friday night. we'll watch for a line of showers. overnight 62 with a few clouds. tomorrow 83. some spots warmer than that, but i think on the whole a comfortable day. tomorrow 60, partly cloudy and cooling off nicely. seven-day forecast showing basically more nice temperatures, no huge warmup here. if you warrant a fan of the extremely hot weekend, we won't have it this weekend. so i can't guarantee a completely dry weekend but i can't say heavy rain. >> you know what today is. it's spelling bee day. >> high pressure. scripps national spelling bee underway today in

washington. students from maryland and from all over the country are spelling their hearts out hoping to be the best of the bee. we go live on this. i guess you could call it an opening day, right? >> reporter: it is opening day. they are spelling words i have never heard of. the spellers we've spoke with said they're not that hard because they've studied a lot to get to this stage. there are 278 olympians in their own right. spelling prodigy. >> i am really excited. i'm having a lot of fun. >> reporter: the scripps national spelling bee is back and this 10-year-old is just one of the elite spellers competing to win a $30,000 cash prize and the title of national champion. >> i'm so proud to be here and supporting her and watching her spell on stage. >> reporter: she hopes to follow

in her big sister's footsteps. she won three years ago. sunny levine hopes the third time is the charm. that's a big word. >> not really. >> reporter: she spelled it right putting her one step closer to a goal of tomorrow night's final rounds. >> i want to win. >> reporter: she study differently. she is visually impaired. mesmerized described how more kids are fascinated with words today. >> since 1976 we have had international participation in the bee but in recent years it has exfloat -- exploded. >> reporter: they will start

international competitions as early as next year. kelly, more than 200 kids are about to get cut. we'll find out who will make this through the final rounds. that includes spellers olivia and jack. their fate is depending on their combined score from yesterday's rin test and today's performance on stage. >> i've watched this on tv. can't you see kidding stalling or passing out. >> reporter: i didn't see any of that today, kelly. these kids really did a great job. they asked a lot of questions about the words and most of them did great. >> we'll stay tuned. thanks for that live report. we'll see you again tomorrow. you can catch saul the action,

researchers say it may not be the most ideal situation but people waiting for a lung transplant are better off getting a lung from a smoker than none at all. recipients lived longer but not as long as if they received a lung from a nonsmoker. if you managed to avoid catching the flu this year, you may be in the clear. the centers for disease control said flu season is officially over. it was mild compared to other years it. also set a new record for having the slowest peak. a mild winter and the fact that more people are getting flu shots could account for some of

that. if you're going to bike, wear a helmet and follow the law. bikers should hoe bay the same traffic signs and signals as drivers and never ride against the flow of traffic. use the right most lane in the direction you're headed. dress in bright colors and use reflectors. use hand signals and try to make eye contact with drivers. make sure your bike is in good shape and you shouldñi be one to three inches between the rider. he had a long criminal record and in boarding pass. so how was a man able to board a flight in california? how he was caught and the charges he may be facing coming up at 5:30. police in louisiana get a big break in the case of that missing college student.
