this is "nightline," june 5, 2012. good evening. i'm terry moran. exclusive report on a breaking investigation. it focuses on the very emotional subject of childhood vaccines. we bring you a stunning revelation that's raising an alarming question, about just how much parents should trust in the effectiveness of the shots their kids get. here is abc's jim avila for tonight's "nightline" investigates. >> it may not feel like it to little eve da lin ski, but her mother is just trying to do the right thing. >> julie's daughter just turned a year old. that means it's time to get the latest round of shots recommended by the federal government. vaccines that protect against 16

pretty bad, even deadly diseases. julie heard a lot of unfounded talk from friends about whether vaccines like these might do more harm than good. >> few seconds of crying, then she gets past it. >> scientists have repeatedly debunked widely publicized concerns that childhood vaccines cause autism. but the controversy scared a lot of parents. the lars thing public health officials need is a self induced vaccine crisis. but tonight, that's exactly what they have. the federal government's own investigators finding serious problems with the vaccine supply. the health and human services inspector general, the government's watchdog, made an alarming discovery. even surprising themselves when they found dose after dose haphazardly stored in resfrij ray tors at clinics and doctor offices. some so cold they were frozen. others not cold enough. others past their expiration

date. conditions that threaten the very effectiveness of the medicine. >> we found three or four providers storing the vaccines in temperatures either too hot or too o cold. >> that 75% of the 45 sample sites inspected. that is a problem. because extreme temperatures can render the vaccines useless. this vaccine should never be frozen. look at the ice? >> how did this happen. >> at this point we really have to do a better job. there's been turn other in doctor offices. the clinicians offices are very busy places. this is a challenge. it's a challenge to our doctor's offices. it's a challenge to the public health program. we're really committed to take this seriously and improve tu situation. >> what's the risk? the damage or expired vax sooen may not hurt you directly, but it can leaf communities unprotected from easily preventable diseases. >> vaccine that has not been kept at the right temperature, won't be unsafe. you kbt be certain that the

material in there is going to cause the child's immune system to react as strongly as it's supposed to. >> in january, 2007, article in the american joumpbl of public health improper vak siege storage contributed to resent pretus sus rates. known as whooping cuff, right now in washington state, public health officials struggling to understand what is behind a huge outbreak this spring. could unreported problems of vaccine be responsible? >> parents do need to know that the system is strong. that's our responsibility. we have to make sure we're improving things. >> how do you assure them it's strong when they here that this data says, this is the problem? >> i think the most reassuring piece is what's going on with disease that most of the diseases that we vaccinate against are record low levels. even the ones we're seeing outbreaks of would be 100 times more common if we didn't have a vaccinated population.

we have lots of data that the vaccines are working. this is a sign that we can't take that for granted and need to improve the system. >> dr. besser agrees. this report should be a wakeup call for parents. >> the next time you go see your pediatrician, your child is going to get a shot, ask them, are their systems strong? are they certain their vaccines stored at the right temperature? >> when you close it, it's caught. >> at the offices of little eve's pediatrician, they have systems and more systems to make sure their vaccines are stored safely. and the doctor has no problem showing her patients her vaccine is all that it should be. >> february 22 and 2014. it's always a heads up for a group that may not have heard it dwret or may not have really looked at their refrigeration policies. >> the cdc says it will comply with recommendations from the inspector general to retrain clinic and doctor office personnel about safe storage. emphasize how important vaccine

star wars movie. for john cue sack, the shadow being john malecot vich. in which he played a down on his luck puppeteer who literally gets inside the head of the famous hollywood star. >> that was a very, very shadowy character, for sure. i sort of immersed myself in the shadow and started to feel all of his pain, all of his shame. all the things he wanted to avoid. >> these guys tend not to describe antidepressants, in part because their artistic patients need their shadows. >> in a way, you don't want to mess with the particularer in rosies that lead to great movie us. >> yeah. everybody asks that. if i use the tools, which i lose my chops, will i lose my talent. the answer is no. >> one of the tools described in the book is called the reversal of desire. >> the reversal of desire teaches you to desire pain. now, i know that sounds really strange. but we're not talking about
