that's what's making news in america this morning. p. >> stay with us for "good morning america." and have a great friday, we have team coverage this morning and new information one week after a rash of tornadoes rolled through maryland. we're live with reports all morning. >>reporter: and here's the fol ston pharmacy. work is still being done to make repairs from last week's storm damage. i'm linda stow. the challenges they're facing here. firestorm in the nition's capitol. republicans claim the white house has been leaking national security secrets to make this president look good. those accusations and the response, those stories just ahead. good morning, maryland, happy friday, thanks for joining us. as you may know, today marks one week since those tornadoes touched down in our area.

we've learned overnight that 12 tornadoes actually hit our state. so let's take a look back at some of the footage we're talking about. this is video from hartford county in folston, damage seemed to be the worse there. before we take a look at how things are one week later, we want to see how things are today. we'll send it over to meteorologist lynette charles. not a pretty sight last week. a much better picture now. >> we're still dealing with preliminary information, so by next week things will start to -- we'll know exactly what's going on. but for now we are dealing with 12, so we do have this tornado followup for you and we can see four ef-1s ald 8 ef-0s, 65 to 85 miles an hour. we did have one watersville road, mount airy, more of the same in fingsburg, that's all in carroll county. we're also looking at one for hartford county.

we talked about that one, that's the falston ones pleasant hills. this is in allegheny county, 41. everywhere else we're talking about ef- 0s. one that touched down in kingsville was an ef-0 that was karen drive, and we also have one fort meade, dutchess county as well and we have -- montgomery county as well, we'll talk more about this as we go through the rest of the morning and also get our forecast for today. right now let's get a check of the abc 2 time saver traffic with lauren cook. lauren, we've definitely been dealing with some rough weather in the past, but today things seem a little bit calmer, at least right now. >>reporter: calmer forecast, but we are dealing with a crash this morning on 695. it's actually shut down the ramp to route 10 south. so if you are traveling in the area, you do want to stick with highway as your alternate route. if you are head out to the northeast corridor of 95, here's what it looks like at white marsh blf. fortunately no delays to talk

about. it will be a nice easy ride. just four minutes to travel from this point all the way to 695. once you do get onto the beltway, here's what it likes -- looks like in parkville, no problems to report at hartford road. that is a look at your abc 2 time saver traffic. megan, over to you. cleanup efforts continue this morning after those disasterrous storms struck a week ago, the big story this morning. take a look at this map, it shows the heart of the damage in hartford county, the area we're talking about, falston on route 1. we have team coverage this morning, we start with charley crowson. linda stow also out this morning. charley has the latest on the cleanup efforts there. charley. >>reporter: a man, keith mattus is recovering this morning. more on that in just a bit. over my shoulder some of the debris fields and some of the piles beginning to form here, outside of bipper's automotive, megan. this has been the scene throughout much of the area

being dubbed ground zero here in falston where a lot of the debris and the wood and the broken up cars and whatnot. we've got some video from yesterday to show you how bad things are here in parts of falston, and one man, jeff stow, he is the owner of bipper's automotive. he was in his office when that tornado ripped right through here, the debris here and keith matthews,late listen to what he experienced. >> winds started picking up. sounded like a 747 coming through. you could feel it shake. if you look at the trusses underneath, you can see where they were twisted underneath. it was quite a storm, about 15 minutes. it was quite interesting. it was different. >>reporter: friend of keith matthews, he has been working with him for a number of years. he has the automotive repair shop here, keith has his

detailing shop just to the east of that. a fund has been set up now for keith. we talked to his fiancee janice last night. he is recovering well, doing well. he is right now in the rehab facility, so that fund is set up courtesy of bb and t bank. you can take care of that. make your donations today and help out the matthews family. linda stow is a quarter mile down the road with how recovery efforts are going there too. >>reporter: most of the businesses have reopened here at the building of the farston pharmacy. you can see a tarp covering most of the building. we're told everything inside was okay, it was just the damage that was done to the roof. and when all that rain came down, it soaked the insulation, so we're told some subcontractors are working here to pull that insulation out, just to make sure the ceiling doesn't collapse or the walls don't collapse. cleanup continues in neighborhoods across falston. we saw this crew clearing out trees from someone's back yard yesterday. joseph tells us he's been busy

since last week, removing trees, pullingle out trees and clearing the road. >> we've been busy cleaning up trees from that tornado. it's like one tree on top of another on top of another. we go in there and start cleaning up. it's just like it gets more and more. we've been here all week, saturday, today, tomorrow. >>reporter: so coming up at 5:00 we'll have an update on the work being done here at the falston pharmacy. again, the big challenges that contractors are facing to get this building back in working order. we're live in falston, linda stow, abc 2 news. another storm in our past hit our area last august is still being cleaned up around the nation. residents in eastern north carolina still recovering this morning from the damages of hurricane irene. just last week 1700 volunteers were helping to repair homes in the pemlico county area. the leader of the eight days of hope says he's surprised the

homes still looked the way they did after the storm. 65 homes were repaired from their last visit. they accused former penn state coach jerry sandusky of abusing them and for months they have been allow today remain anonymous. this morning we may soon learn the names, even get to see the faces and the victims behind the biggest sex scandal in college history. plus residents in parts of australia, they have a huge cleanup on their hands this morning. we have video from above straight ahead. >>reporter: everything is here 695 at liberty road. i'll show you what question looks like coming up in my abc 2 time saver traffic report. you can be the first to know about breaking news, weather and traffic. just download abc 2's free app by texting wmar to 46988.

weather, it's the topic of conversation today and many people in australia feeling it too. dozens of homes and businesses on the western side of the country, they were damaged after a tornado ripped through the area. the twister touched down in two suburbs. the big story there and the big story here this morning, lynette, cleanup. i know a lot of people want to know about the weekend now, so you have a lot of talking to do. >> i do have a lot of talking to do. we're going to get to our weather right now because it was a week ago today we did get some tornadoes in the afternoon, evening time frame. this morning we are looking spectacular out there. we are nice and clear. we did have some showers and thunderstorms actually scattered in nature that rolled through the area yesterday afternoon. we zoom in, though, get a little bit closer to home, mostly clear skies will translate into lots of sunshine as we go through the morning, the afternoon. but the places that did get a little bit of that wet weather, looking at a little bit of visibility issues this morning, so if you're heading into virginia, be prepared for a one- mile reduced visibility in culpepper and seven in winchester. look at the temperatures this

morning, they are pretty much seasonable as you head out the door. let's get a check now now of abc 2 time saver traffic with lauren. you were talking about an accident earlier. >>reporter: yes. trouble on the beltway this morning, on the outer loop that has shut down the ramp to route 10 south. you do want to use ritchie highway as your alternate route. if you are headed out to 83, here's a live look at hunt valley and shan road. everything up to speed. no problems to talk about whatsoever. it will be a nice easy ride as you head down towards the beltway and it will be clear as you get onto the jfx. here's a look at 95 north of 695. unfortunately no problems to report if you're heading north up towards the tunnels or south down towards 495. and today there is a major milestone at the charles street bridge overpass. all of that construction. so some good news finally in that vicinity. today the existing roundabout will be removed and replaced with a traffic signal and the bridge will remain open while the work is still being finished. there will be road closures and detours still in the area.

all of that construction will begin at 7:00 tonight. megan, over to you. >> thanks so much. a reminder about those major delays at the i-95 harbor tunnel, they begin on june 19th. construction will be rerouting traffic across the bridge just south of the toll facility. the $5 million project is going to replace sections of the bridge concrete deck and make improvements to barrier walls and drainage. by the way, that's going to last through mid august so you're definitely going to want to prepare for that. some local students plan to make their soda -- their summer soda free, so coming up the students, they say that they're giving up the drink. it's not the only part of how they want to get healthy. we have details on this just ahead. plus the white house is denying accusations that they leaked classified information. why the fbi is now launching an investigation of their own. you're waking up to what's new in maryland. we'll be right back.

news time 4:44. five things you need to do before you head out the door this morning. motion hearings continue today in the fort meade hearing for bradley manning. he is facing several charges related to giving classified information to wiki leaks. his trial is scheduled to begin on september 21st. a rally is taking place on capitol hill today and several u.s. lawmakers are attending this event. it's called stand up for religious freedom and they're protesting the white house mandate to make employers offer health insurance to pay for contraceptive treatment. special olympics maryland gets started tonight with an opening ceremony at talson university. 1400 athletes will compete in five different events including softball and cheerleading. the opening ceremony starts at 7:30. the games wrap up on sunday. grab your glass because maryland wine week begins today. local wineries are pairing up with restaurants and wine shops, all to host a variety of events from now until next saturday. you can take part in tastings and learn how to compare wines

with food. i'll have another is going for the triple crown win this weekend at the belmont stakes in new york. he could be the first horse to claim victory in 34 years. time 6:40 tomorrow night. a lot of people will be watching that, glued to their tv sets. we want to check weather and traffic. things look good right now. >>reporter: an accident cleared from the beltway, it briefly shut down the ramp to route 10. everything back to normal now. no delays to talk about in the area. you do want to keep in mind there will be heavy delays on 895 this summer. the new construction project was actually unveiled yesterday. it doesn't start until june 20th, but it's going to reduce traffic to just one lane. so do expect heavy delays beginning, again, june 20th. key bridge, fort mchenry tunnel, that's going to be the way to go. yesterday every time i went outside to take the girls outside it started to rain. it was gorgeous, you'd put them in the car seat, the stroller, you go outside, it started raining. it was ridiculous. >> it's so funny because for most of the day it was beautiful out there. >> gorgeous, yes. >> we got those scattered

showers and thunderstorms that i was talking about in the afternoon. right now, though, maryland's most powerful radar is nice and dry. all five sweeps are on. you don't have to worry about bringing that rain gear with you today. we will stay dry. but this morning once again we are on the cool side. check out ellicott city coming in at 49 degrees. that's about 10 degrees below where we should be this time of the year. >> thanks, lynette. teachers and staff at woodside elementary school are holding a fundraiser to help students' families that have fallen on tough times. it's called how big is your heart. woodside elementary school is a title one school which means about 54% of the students qualify for free lunch and 10 qualify for reduced lunch. administrators were so concerned for the students that they came up with a fundraiser to help. >> i think it's awesome. they're going to touch so many lives and there is so many people out there that really needs more help and they feel like no one cares. >> how big is your heart

fundraiser will be held today from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 at mothers in federal hill. the cost is $10 per person. if you want more information, we've taken care of that for you. we've posted everything on our website, 7online. when you get there look under education. students at another school are planning on giving up soda, at least for 30 days. 200 rolling park elementary and middle school students are weaning themselves off of soda as part of a statewide effort to help curb obesity. maryland health officials say that the pledge is more than an effective way to reach kids than the controversial proposal in new york which means banning all soda in anything that's larger than 16 ounces. organizers do say that getting companies to switch away from sugary drinks may take a while, so this campaign at least is a good starlgt point. free sample mama has a whole new set of freebies for this freebie friday for you. if you like a page on facebook, you can get kfc's cookbook and a free decal from annie's home

grown or lipton tea, honey iced tea mix. head to our website, it's abc2news.com. like it on facebook. the card store offering a free father's day card online. that's available until june 10th. so head to our website. you can find all the information there. again, it's abc2news.com. you can find that under the lifestyle tab. other news for you this morning, there was a heated exchange yesterday between the fire chief and the city council president. this is all over the proposed closure of three fire companies. a plan unveiled by the fire chief, james clack and supported by the baltimore city mayor, stephanie rawlings blake would disband fire companies, 15, and replace an nnl company. it's charged with putting water on fire rescues, not rescues. so the council president says the chief should be fighting against the closures. however, the chief says that the original budget would have eliminated nine fire companies. around the nation this

morning, young men who are accused -- who are accusing former penn state assistant football coach jerry sandusky of molesting them have been allow today remain anonymous so far. but that may not last. when they take the witness stand as early as next week, the victims will be forced to state their name for the record. the lawyers and victim advocates right now are arguing against this. the victims thus far have been referred to as victim one and so on and so forth, and sandusky, by the way, is facing 52 counts of sexual abuse. meanwhile, penn state university has instituted a new policy requiring all their employees to report suspected child abuse to state authorities and also in an announcement yesterday, they are requiring annual training for any staffer in a position to report abuse. a school spokeswoman says that the police go beyond during the current pennsylvania law. call it dij@ vu, many people realized there was a problem when 600 people were

summoned to the auburn courthouse tuesday morning all by accident. 1200 people were called to the same courthouse last month in another mistake. the court executive officer said it was human clerical error, and after the error it may have instituted a manual control that also failed as well. new this morning, a firestorm in the nation's capital. republicans claim that the white house has been leaking national security secrets to the press, all to make president obama look good. well, now democrats are joining republicans in saying enough. some of the leaks are already under investigation by the fbi and now officials say that they are doing more lie detector tests of people with access to classified information. >> regardless of how politically useful these leaks may have been to the president, they have to stop. these leaks have to stop. >> it puts us at risk, it puts lives at risk. >> so up next with all of this, congressional hearings with

tough questions for the administration. the white house says it grossly was irresponsible to suggest that the obama administration authorized those leaks. more to come on this story. but right now let's get a check on your forecast, because, lynette, it is friday and people always want to know what they can expect for the weather on the weekend. >> i know. they're so excited just the fact alone it's friday and then you throw in the good weather, you sprinkle that in, that's exactly what i'm going to do today. it is gorgeous out there. temperatures below average, we should be at 59 degrees. 56 in baltimore, 55 along the eastern shore. travels taking you to york, pennsylvania, you'll come in right around 51 degrees right now. the satellite and radar not picking up on a whole lot. we are mainly clear and we are going to get lots of sunshine as we head throughout the day. the reason why is while you're looking at that big blue h, that is our friend for today and actually through the weekend. with that we will be seeing more sunshine in the forecast. we see that stalled out front yesterday still stalled to the south. with that that will be bringing

them some showers and thunderstorms. but future trend not going to be picking up on a whole lot, just plenty of blue sky as we go through time here. that continues into saturday, also into sunday, and then we'll start to see some changing in the forecast as we head into the beginning of next week. but let's stick with today, shall we? look at this number, 86 degrees. that's what i'm going with. eat the lunch outdoors, play the golf, go play a little bit of tennis, anything outdoors, take a long walk with the dog, the dog will appreciate it, i'm telling you. as we look at the seven-day forecast today, as we go 86 degrees and we will get hot, though, as we go into the weekend. that will be the big story. make sure you slather on that sunscreen, drink plenty of beverages. let's get a check in and out of abc 2 time saver traffic with lauren. how are the roads looking? that accident has gone away now, right? >>reporter: yes. a crash cleared from the beltway on the outer loop and briefly shut down the ramp to route 10. everything back to normal. that's going to be the same case on the top side as we check in and take a live look in talson, everything up to speed here at delaney valley

road. you're looking at an 11-minute ride on that outer loop from 95 up towards 83. as we check in at 895 at o'donnell street, no problems to report. this will change, though. beginning june 20th there will be major construction taking place in the area. so traffic will be reduced to just one lane. that's going to last all the way through october. so do keep in mind you will want to use the fort mchenry tunnel or the key bridge as your alternate route. if you are using the jfx to get into the city, no problems to talk about whatsoever, nice and clear from the beltway all the way downtown. that is a look at your abc 2 time saver traffic. megan, over to you. this morning the cdc is on the hunt for a killer. what health officials say is a growing concern about a mysterious and deadly strain of e. coli that already claimed one life. plus there's a panic in the northeast part of india right now. why some people are leaving the light on and standing guard. this
