is? >> reporter: was it that unusual to get that tornado in maryland. however, it's an active tornado pattern around maryland in the last several years. as we look at the attraction, they plotted some short ef0 and e f-1 tracks. when you consider tornado, ef5, these are the weakest types of, of tornadoes. thank goodness. that's why we had three injuries. nonetheless, an unusual day, you bet. 12 tornadoes in the afternoon and evening. the highest concentration was around the baltimore dwrair. several of these were in the d.c. area. we have one updated in allegheny county. ef0's and a few e f-1's. still dangerous and could cause some significant property damage. as far as the rarity, it's been an active decade. the last 10 years has been active and documented on video.

some drivers thought they struck it rich when they spot add bunch of cash spotted around interstate 97. it happened when a bag holding a convenience store flew on top of the car. jeff hager joins us behind the man behind the costly mistake. >> we've been caught up in the rat race from time to time, dropping the kids, racing to the bank and even taking out the trash. the owner of the store was getting ready to leave his house with a bag full of cash to be deposited when he put it on top of his car for a moment to take the trash on the curb. he left it there. he was driving to work around i- 97, when the bag fell, spilling the money out, by the time he realized what happened, cars were stopping on the road and people were scooping up the cash and drove away. the owner is now on the hook for thousands of dollars and dealing with those who found the money to return it.

>> return the money. give it to us. i have two children and wife and we work hard, everything that day. sometimes seven days a week to make a living. if we don't make the money back, i'll have a hard time. >> so far, three people turned in hundreds of dollars and deposit back. the glen burnie berric, represents the fraction. the march and armored truck, money grabbing frenzy ensued, none of the money resurfaced. that's a heartbreaker. and another one of a different kind. get ready to lay down the new gamble for tomorrow's belmont stakes. the horse going for the triple crown is out. i will not have another, won't be racing because of the slow intended. not only that, the horse has been retired. have another trainer. it's not tragic but it's a huge disappointment.

reporting on the new face of homelessness for a year now. he saw the homeless schoolchildren population more than doubled since the recession. we thought it was an important story to tell you. he continues the reporting with a group of students, who inspired the fund razor and how the family is struggling with a new reality. at any school at the end of any day, parking lot, with a finely choreographed dance, cars and moms and heading home. >> for demarco, anytime soon, their journey home is a complicated two step. every day, the boys walk away om woodside elementary in gren burning to a park nearby. >> you don't know what will

happen next. quite simply, they don't know what will happen. these thee boys are homeless. they move six times in 11 months. one place less stable than the next. every day, after school, they come here to a playground near the last department they were able to call home. and it's here they wait unsupervise no one looking for them, for their grandmother to finally get off work. sometimes that's for more than six hours. >> i look around and -- >> look in her car. hours. >> two days. >> and sometimes, he's bored out here and he waits to see your car pull up. >> he does. >> does that hurt? >> yes. >> i don't know what i'm supposed

to do. >> how could i help him? >> she's the boy's grandmother. she ended up with four of them after her daughter was sent away for burglary. she crammed them until her $12 an hour salary as a care give was stretched too thin. she and the boys were evicted the children now part of northern's 14,000 maryland schoolchildren that are homeless. until night fall, it is then the 52-year-old grandmother drives the family, subsidized washington apartment, still in the name of their incarcerated mother. when the options ran out, the oldest remember the key to the place 25 miles away. they are squatting here.
