our affiliate for that story. that's what's making news in america this the three-day manhunt is over, the suspect in those shootings near auburn university now in custody. how police tried to flush him out and what led to the arrest. information on what's happening today with the bishop conference. details straight ahead. it is wednesday, june 13th. good morning, maryland, i'm charley crowson. linda -- megan pringle with us as well. linda stow is town at inner harbor. >> we'll check in with her in just a little bit. rainy yesterday, what's in store for today? here's meteorologist lynette charles. >> good morning. the rain has moved out of the area. we look at radar, it's dry right now but not before putting down lots of rainfall across the area. let's start with that.

over three inches in elkton. we're also looking at churchville that got over two inches of some rainfall. so some heavy rainfall totals, needed that, but at the airport we only got about .30 inch of rain. as we look at temperatures this morning, coming in the upper 60s in elkton. 67 degrees right now in churchville. with all that rain we are still watching a coastal flood advisory for the areas shaded in the blue color. we also do have flash flood warning the further off toward the north and east you go, maybe if you're heading to new jersey, you will be running into that until about 6:00 this morning. i'll talk about when the dry weather -- or how the dry weather will continue and when we have some rain in the forecast. right now let's get a check of the abc 2 news time saver traffic with lauren cook. how are the roads this early? >>reporter: good morning, lynette. no delays to talk about from the beltway all the way downtown to east fayette street. speeds will remain high traveling through the tunnels. do remember one week from today major construction will take

place on 895. traffic reduced to just one lane in both directions, all the way through summer. and unfortunately the lane closures will still continue all the way through october. so you will want to stick with the fort mchenry tunnel or the key bridge. if you are headed out to 95, here's a live look in white marsh, no problems at route 43. just a four-minute ride from this point out to the beltway. one you do get onto the beltway, everything up to speed at heardford -- hartford road. that is a look at your abc 2 time saver traffic. megan and charley. over to you. we learned overnight that the aide to the former congresswoman gabriel giffords, rob barrber, he won the house seat that she gave up after she was shot. giffords herself now heading to the polls. this is her in support of her former right hand man. she gave up her seat to focus on her health after being shot in the head a year and a half ago. closer to home this

morning, we are now following a few big events to tell you about. ash birch -- arch bishop william lori headed out of town today and baltimore's mayor responding to some serious questions about the city's rec centers that are slated to close today. >> sharree has been following the stories and has all new information as we start this wednesday. what can you tell us? >>reporter: here's a look at what's happening today, the conference of catholic bishops begins and they have a lot of work to do. three bishops will be there. you're going to look at a live picture. actually that conference is being held in atlanta. the u.s. bishops will devote a large part of their concerns about infringements on religious liberties by governments and the courts. the bishops will also receive a 10-year progress report by the national review board on the charter for the protection of children and young people. now, they'll hear recommendations from a review board. that conference starts today and runs through friday. and taking a look at other news today. today some of the city's

recreation centers will close to build newer models. rallies have been held in protest of those closures. up to nearly 8 centers are scheduled for closures. baltimore mayor stephanie rawlings blake plans to improve recreational opportunities for young people approved last year as part of the 2012 budget. here's what the mayor has to say in spops to the closure. she says "this restructuring plan is bold and innovative, but not without some tough choices. in the end, it's the right thing to do for baltimore's future. " now, the mayor also says keeping dilapidatedded buildings and depleted staff is not an option. she says it's time to move forward and make some smart choices that will grow baltimore. that's a look at what's happening today, sharree johnson, abc 2 news. >> speaking of the mayor, tomorrow she'll be taking part in the 80th conference of u.s. mayors. that conference is held through the weekend. she'll be speaking to the group of fellow u.s. mayors. on friday morning rawlings

it was wet weather, look at this yesterday, some areas certainly hit harder than others. this is china. torrential rains there battered provinces in eastern and southern central china. nearly 300,000 residents were affected, many were evacuated from their homes. meanwhile in texas, look at this, storms rolled through that area, particularly in the houston area, knocking out power to thousands of people. there were reports of winds up to 70 miles per hour. they had hail that was two inches in diameter. here at home a much different situation. we did get hit with some rain. it was pretty heavy yesterday in some areas, not as bad in other areas. hartford county, though, they got hit hard. >> exactly. they did get nailed with some

rain. charley when he got in this morning, he said, lynette what happened. he just looked at me that way. the reason why we didn't get hit as hard is because the fact -- remember yesterday where i was showing the showers and thunderstorms over the ark-la- tex, that robbed us of the moisture. that's why we didn't see a lot of the rain across baltimore. >> basically a crumby day without the rain that we needed. >> exactly. the good news is we didn't get any flooding. we did get the rain, but we didn't get any flooding. thank you to the storms to the south. as we look at the big picture here, satellite and radar still some showers and thunderstorms popping up around texas. they g some severe weather once again for today. but as we go a little bit closer to home, we are drying things out. there's that system that's pushing off into the atlantic as of now and we are going to get some sunshine in here as we go into the afternoon. so that's definitely some good news. but we did get some heavy rainfall totals in here, especially northeast.

look. we see over close to about three inches of some rainfall across that area. about half an inch of rain in goldsboro and half an inch in easton. so, yes, we did get some rain. the good news is we didn't get the flooding out of this. the winds will pick up as we go throughout the day out of the north. this is what we have to look forward to as we go into time, partly cloudy skies with that temperature coming in right around 82 degrees. let's get a check now of the abc 2 news time saver traffic with lauren cook. how are the roads? >>reporter: so far so good if you are traveling on 95 the south side. no delays to talk about whatsoever if you're heading southbound down towards 495 or northbound up toward the tunnels. if you are headed out to 83, no concerns on the harrisburg expressway. it will be clear from york road all the way downtown to east fayette street once you do get onto the jfx. as far as the beltway is concerned, a live look in towson at delaney valley road, no problems whatsoever, an easy ride up towards 83. as we just head south on the beltway and parkville at hartford road, no problems to

transportation officials are anticipating traffic delays around baltimore for the next week because of the celebration in the inner harbor. they say drivers should expect delays at the fort mchenry tunnel, on 95, also on 95 and

395 going into the city. first lady katie o'malley and some young people today are holding a mock campout. it's happening at the governor's house. it's a great way, they say to promote the great american backyard campout which is scheduled for june 23rd. the event encouraging outdoor recreation during the summer months. two baltimore-area wal- marts are opening today after undergoing renovations located in rosedale and nottingham. at 5:00 we'll let you know what changes come to the stores. day two of the mini camp for the baltimore ravens. everyone will be watching to see if ed reid shows up. you may remember he missed the first session yesterday and that's for unknown reasons. reid could be fined up to $63,000 they say if he misses three days. long lines are expected today and lottery dealers ahead of tonight's powerball drawing. here we go again. that jackpot $240 million. that drawing tonight straight

>> and the weather, you're going to like it for today, drying out nicely, plenty of sunshine in the forecast. you can see maryland's most powerful radar is dry and temperatures on the mild side once again for today. as we check out what's going to be happening as we look at your winds right now. they are on the light side. they will be picking up as we go throughout the day so it is going to become breezy. i'm going to send this over to charley. authorities say the 22-year- old man suspected of killing three people and wounding three others near auburn university is now in custody. he turned himself in last night after a three-day manhunt. samanti leonard could appear in court as early as today. he's charged with capital murder and first-degree assault. on monday police and federal agents swarmed a home in montgomery where they thought he was hiding after the saturday shootings. police say they believed he was in the attic, but he was gone by the time they raided that -- the raid was launched. >> i know your young men won't be coming home, but hopefully this arrest will give you some closure. it's not over. we're going to continue to investigate this case.

>> two other men were also jailed in the case on charges they were helping hinder the prosecution. now, one was leaving the scene with leonard, others misled investigators during the search. police say they do have a motive for the shooting, but they're not releasing it at this time. 4:47 right now. the wife of a florida man who shot trayvon martin has also been arrested. george zimmerman's wife, her name is shellie has been charged with perjury. she's accused of lying to a judge about the money that she and her husband had in their bank that led to him being released on $150,000 bond. she was arrested, but she's since been released on on $1,000 bond. zimmerman, by the way, is still in jail this morning. the trial continues in pennsylvania for the former penn state assistant football coach jerry sandusky. day two brought more revelations from the man who has been known as victim number one who sparked the investigation. rick simpson has more on this day two of the trial. >>reporter: on the second day

of his sexual abuse trial, jerry sandusky faced the accuser who helped trigger the case. the 18-year-old known as victim one testified he'd spent the night at sandusky's home more than 100 times as a boy. he broke down as he described kisses on the forehead that over time escalated to oral sex. the defense tried to point out inconsistencies in the testimony. the alleged victim's lawyer says testifying in such a high profile case is torture. >> you saw today firsthand the pain that a victim of sexual abuse undergoes. >>reporter: mike mcqueary also took the stand tuesday, the former penn state assistant football coach testified he saw sandusky engaged in a sexual act with a boy in the showers at the school's athletic facility. he says he informed university officials but left out lurid details because he felt uncomfortable. under cross examination he was questioned why he never went to police when the university failed to take action against sandusky. a former elementary school wrestling coach for victim one also took the stand. he testified he'd walked in on

sandusky and that boy lying face to face on a wrestling mat. those sandusky has pleaded not guilty, prosecutors allege in new court document that is a penn state administrator kept a file about sandusky's alleged activities for years. authorities say gary schultz, vice president at penn state initially withheld the files and contradict what shult and former athletic director tim curley told a grand jury. both men have pleaded not guilty. 10 florida a and m students charged with hazing for their death in the drum major. the students have waived their patterns. the hearing is scheduled for 8:30 in the morning. this morning a warning from the anne arundel county fire department after a 6-year- old was targeted in a bottle bomb attack. now, the explosion happened on this playground at sunset elementary school. two boys threw the bottle at the girl. luckily she wasn't injured. the 12 and 15 years old who threw that bottle were arrested and charged with juveniles --

as juveniles with reckless endangerment and possession of a destructive device. this is the sixth bottle bomb incident they've seen this year. the festivities just beginning for the celebration this weekend all in commemoration for the war of 1812. >> yeah. so here is a closer look at the tall ships' arrival today. here's abc 2 news' linda stow. linda, i imagine it is pretty quiet there right now. >>reporter: it is. the ships aren't here yet, but they are well on their way. the first ships are set to arrive at 8:30 this morning. they'll continue to arrive throughout the day until 5:00 tonight. you can see preparations are already under way. the flags are up and they line the harbor here. if you take a walk with me over here, they have the tents set up for the celebration. this is a seven-day event going on here at the harbor and around baltimore. you can see the tents over there. about a half dozen tall ships left norfolk, virginia yesterday morning to make the 24-hour trek here to baltimore. more than 40 ships and naval vessels from around the world will parade into baltimore to kick off seven days of the star

spangled celebration. it's also to commemorate the by centennial of the war of 1812. today through monday you can take free tours of the ships from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the inner point and southport and from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at locust points. celebration points will be set up. the first ships due to arrive this morning at 8:30. we'll be here and keep an eye on it. we're live at the inner harbor, linda stow, abc 2 news. >> of course a lot of people are going to want to know what the weather is going to be like for those festivities. lynette, can you give us an idea? >> it's going to be gorgeous. >> singing. you're breaking out into song. >> i do that. the nice weather tends tore me to do that. right now temperature coming in at 70 degrees in baltimore, also easton and d.c. we're looking at some winds now on the light side, i'd say five to nine miles an hour, but these will pick up as we go throughout the day, about five to 15 miles an hour, maybe gust

up to about 20 miles an hour. so it will get breezy as we go throughout the day. but future trend not picking up on a whole lot. we got some rave, -- rainfall, heavy in spots yesterday, but we didn't get any flooding. follow the timeline there and you'll see we stay dry for a while. the hour-by-hour forecast looks like this, it's going to be gorgeous, eat the lunch outdoors, doing a little bit of golfing, tennis, anything you want to do outdoors because by 4:00 p.m. that temperature coming in right around 82 degrees. it's going to be a nice day. a great day to go to the orioles game because we're looking at first pitch at 7:05. they are playing the pirates once again. 78 degrees, dry, but just a little bit breezy. those winds out of the north about 10 to 15 miles an hour. here's a check of that seven- day forecast for you. as the nice conditions will continue, and there's celebration. we can see plenty of sunshine in the forecast with temperatures nice and seasonable. get out there and enjoy. let's get a check now of the traffic with lauren cook. good morning. how are those roads looking out there? >>reporter: good morning, lynette.
