come by. >> it's amazing. >> reporter: but challenging. >> ray can't bathe himself, he can't toilet himself. he cannot transfer from one situation to the next like off his bed to his chair or to a toilet or into his bath chair. he needs help. >> reporter: he is 90 pounds with almost no muscle. >> i don't have the muscle tone and it's very hard for me to lift up, like i would ke a h really heavy for me. that shows how weak i am. >> reporter: weak physically but in spirit ray is mighty. >> i don't see myself in a wheelchair. i see myself like everybody else. >> reporter: not only does he not define himself by his disability he actually sees himself as a runner. that seems impossible but he is on his wait a minute. >> i'm excited. >> hopefully everybody is here. >> i'm pumped up.

>> reporter: this is ray and he has been training. >> my name is ray. . >> reporter: this is all because of athletes serving agent athletes. >> for some reason major kind of -- the shortened of the straw and they have to sit onto sideline. we put them on the track. >> we are off. >> reporter: kevin is his wing man. he is part of a team. no excuses and they run with ray are. >> doing everything is ray just brings things up a notch. ray is all personality. >> how you doing? are. >> gets us moving laughing. he has a fantastic sense of humor. >> he runs like he stole something. >> he doesn't stop talking. >> get to the wheels, watch, watch,. >> reporter: that talking gets them going at the start of the race and carries them mile after mile. >> everybody out there thinks

that ray need us because -- that's it what you see. they don't know is how much we need him. >> reporter: toward the end the cheering gets quieter and quieter. ray is first to cross the finish line and to tired to celebrate. he can barely speak. >> so how was it? >> great. >> really? >> reporter: despite that everybody knows they will soon be training for the next adventure. >> i want -- i want to go a triathalon. i want to see if i can do it. see what it's like. just have fun. how far can i push myself. >> reporter: and those who know him and watch him aren't surprised. >> i'm proud of the fact he will spread out his borders, he will reach farther than hek. he will try to go beyond his own ability. yet always with an attitude of hey, if i don't make it i will try it the next time.

in girls on the run we train third, 4th and 5th graders to excel as people first, runners second. they tell us growing up isn't so easy. >> la when you leave elementary you get all stressed out and feeling make maybe i'm not good enough or maybe all the other girls smarter or i'm just not good enough to go to middle school. >> reporter: there is a three month program that focuses on self-esteem, peer pressure and bullying, issuing that every girl is running up against. >> even if it's just a seed in the back of their mind that when they are in that situation maybe they will think about it differently and act differently. >> we don't have to run today. >> reporter: sitting out but not on their hands. they are taught to think beyond themselves. >> can you walk for a mile? >> reporter: they put their feet in other shoes getting rid

of their own. the girls collected 240 pairs of old shoes for another nonprofit. it lets poor people to sell them and buy what they need. >> even though you are separate people and don't know each other it's good to help others because you know are you doing something right. >> reporter: mady asked me to be her buddy for the race. she beat her best time by three minutes. go maddie and every girl who works hard to cross that finish line knowing it's not really the destination but the trip. >> it's important to put yourself in life, not just in running. >> reporter: cheryl connor. abc news. >> like that. the girls will be at the finish line to run cheryl home on saturday. she will share the course with 6500 registered runners, it's applying to exfanned to

we are talking the kind that's softball sides. baseball to softball. you see it in the pool but this smashes windshields, creates even roof damage. one of the situations where have you to have extremely high top thunderstorm, 67 to 8,000 feet to produce that type of hail. just a picture out of the state amazing weather on the southern plain. back here its been quiet. upper 60s. winds light from the east. and overall the pattern has been a quiet one with humidity creeping up just a bit. tomorrow we are in the mid80's if you are going downtown. federal hill, locust point, over to canton, mid80's, and little more humid and we think a little more sun. you see the satellite view clearing up out there. that's good. this will mean more sun around here as we go into the day tomorrow. relatively clear shot across the east coast. disturbance off shore. that has brought in the

clouds breaking up a little bit out there. this will mean a sunnier day tomorrow. it's still in the low 80s. if you are going down to the celebration it's the heart of the concrete jungle. it'll be hotter there. the outlook into the rest of the week will be hotter next week. enjoy low 80s over the weekend. ♪
