it turned out to be warmer and sticky. let's check in with the meteorologist. we will check out whether the heat and humidity will stay. >> i will miss this jamie. it is like america's seaports rumbling back to life. i will say this. the weather turned out unbelievably well. the heat not turning up until literally after midday after the ship had sailed. the heat index values have come up. look the west. ninety-four in washington. when you throw in the humidity, 93 in the harbor. this hottest evening by far is after the ships sailed. heat advisories are up for the first day of summer tomorrow. from noon until 8:00, it will be hot. the radar is clear now. route tomorrow, major heat on the way. much more coming up on thursday especially. >> if you ask how business was, they will say it is very

good. you will get a thumbs-up. and the oyster bar had a great weekend on federal hill. so it was a strong breeze of business and the sailboats blue and. how is it down there? >> it went so well that many people compared this to having five fourth of july crowds every day. other folks said it was bigger than that. one thing people are agreeing on is that they are all asking, when is it coming back again? >> you know it is a party when the last cast doesn't leave until four days after it started. what a part -- party. >> we're hearing from thousands of people that they did a great job. it was a wonderful week. >> the sailabration is doing great. the term they are using is, gobs of folks. people all over the city and that the harbor. anywhere that they could get a good view. this restaurant had a record-breaking crowd inside. they say this is one of the biggest weekends downtown that they have ever seen. >> it was unbelievable. there were so many people. everyone wants to take a break and get out of the sun for a little bit and get something to eat. this was the perfect spot for that. people were rolling into the restaurant all day long. we had to start a waiting line right outside the front door. so many people at the restaurant. it is a great thing. >> this weekend was special because folks didn't just come

down for one day. they came back over several days and bought things also. this was her third trip to the harbor on this long weekend. >> it is hard when you have a big group. you want to limit how much you're spending. there are ways to do it but it is good for the economy. to throw a little money there way. >> will you come back? >> yes. >> and that is the kind of thing that everybody likes to hear. folks want to come back down here. even with all of the ships gone, they want to common taken some of the other attractions. they will be back in two years. that is in 2014 to celebrate the bicentennial of the war of 1812. so anyway, all of these folks will come back again in 2014. in the meantime, there will be a lot about them all away from the eastern shore to here. there were 612 different sites and ball of -- involving the

war of 1812. they will try to commemorate and have parties on the eastern shore and here. this will be a great time here. a lot of folks will be coming to celebrate and take in the sights down here in baltimore. reporting live from the harbor. >> great job last week and today. we enjoyed it and we will miss it. you're going to be in a backup if you don't pay attention. traffic on the they will be stopped tomorrow to allow 414 story cranes to get to baltimore. they will be used to fix the steal bridge on the southbound side of the harbor tunnel. so traffic will be stopped. stopped at 1:15 tomorrow. stopped for 40 minutes. traffic on the cambridge will be held up for about 20 minutes. that will be at a quarter after o'clock. so we just survived the traffic mess. we are not ready for another main road to cause a migraine.

we will now have the preview of how bad the harbor tunnel their way will be and for how long. >> if you use 895 in the harbor tunnel, try not too. like for the entire summer. >> we're hoping that we can encourage folks to use the other routes and try to avoid 895 if they can. if they have to take 895, expect delays. >> major ones. the maryland transportation authority is warning you now, starting tomorrow night at 9:00, road crews will get to work resurfacing this 55-year-old bridge south of the harbor tunnel. that will require one northbound lane to be closed for about eight weeks and then in august, one lane in each direction will close. necessary repairs that could result in major backups in both directions and possibly even into the tunnel. nothing drivers for the transportation authority wants to see. >> we're going to have several

of the electronic message signs. the overhead ones as well as the portable ones that you see on the side of the road with delay information and the tour information as well. >> detours that you are encouraged to take. they say that if the harbor tunnel and 895 is your normal route, look to 695 or 95 as your road more traveled. in baltimore, brainteaser, abc news. >> that is my favorite tunnel. this work starts tomorrow night at 9:00 and will last until august. take a different route and stay with it all summer long just like brian told us. after months of speculation, the city council gave final approval to the bottle tax increase. it will raise the tax rate from $0.02 to $0.05 for every bottle of water or soda that we buy in the city. the money is supposed to go for the aging city school system as

part of a package to increase the city's contribution to school construction and repairs by some 140 percent. >> just one week after a bottle bomb was tossed and a playground, more on the handmade devices exploding last night a few blocks away. firefighters responded to reports of explosions here in the elizabeth community where they found one of the devices had gone off. jennifer klein's children discovered this outside their backyard fence. >> reporter: you know it is a prank. but this could have gone really badly. the firemen was saying that it could have burnt the kids fingers or eyes because it was drano. you could have gone really wrong. >> investigators have no suspects but witnesses say they saw three teenagers with a backpack running from the scene after the explosion. a sex offender caught looking at child pornography in a public library. it happened where deputies got

an anonymous report that jeffrey goad was looking at position -- suspicious materials on a public computer two weeks ago. the sheriff's office got a search warrant and found him with videos with child pornography. jeffrey goad is a 50-year-old from millington and is a three-time offender that must register for life after abusing a miner. the man accused of killing another man and eating his heart and brain has been indicted. 21-year-old alexander kinyua is charged with first-degree murder. he has been transferred to clifton perkins hospital for a mental-health evaluation. that is in order from the judge. police say that he was charged and may and admitted to eating parts of his roommate after killing him. the parents of a boy who was attacked by a pit bull testified today before a panel of lawmakers. they are part of a task force put together by the highest court. pit bulls are inherently dangerous. the father of the boy said that the ruling should stand but

animal support groups and supporters of pit bulls raised their voices against the ruling. if it stands after the task force's review, pit bull owners could be liable for dog bites without any previous incidents. we have an update tonight on a recent attack involving l8w another pit bull. also 9-year-old child last month, the victim and his mother went to visit a friend on armstrong lane in pasadena when the unrestrained dog attacked the child. one of the owners had to use a uç.y0w?çñ break his hold. now the owners are battling to get their dog back. police say that they are not happy because it did not by anyone before. >> a bite incident involving the same dog caused this to be violated. as it stands, the dog is being housed at animal control. there is a custody order in place. the owner must appear to

plea the case for the dogs return. police say that the child is still recovering from severe wounds to his legs. >> arrangements have been set for 20 rolled dan unassessed who died on his family farm. visitation will be held at the funeral home this thursday from 2:00 until 5:00 and then 6:00 until 9:00. this will be held at saint joan of arc catholic church in aberdeen. he will be buried at arlington cemetery. in leiu of flowers, the family is asking for donations to help the deer creek valley. this has been set up at hartford bank in aberdeen. you have to be really careful when you come in from the outside. coming up, why you have to be on your toes for text. search yourself and your pets or you could be in trouble. we have a report after the

. spending a lot more time outside now that it is warmer. one thing you need to look out for is ticks. how to know if you have been bitten and what to look for. >> we all love to spend time outside in the summer, whether it is doing work in the garden or playing with your kids. being outdoors is fun but it can to keep -- put you at risk for being bitten by ticks.

>> these ticks are very small. they are about the size of a pinhead. the adults are about the size of a pellet. when you look for these -- pay special attention to areas you do not look at often. maybe the back of your knees or the back of your neck. the armpit area of. >> he says the best thing to do to prevent bites is to apply insect repellent that contains this ingredient. the higher the concentration, the better. ticks are attracted to humans and pets because they are looking for a warm blood meal. >> the takes -- ticks feed on you. then they drop off and go away. you can be left with a bite, that is a red spot they can linger on. or you can get lyme disease. >> those bites can also cause a rash. >> it can cause a skin reaction. later on, it can also cause things like joint aches or flu

symptoms. later on, it can be even more serious like heart or brain issues. >> if you find one on your body, try to remove it right away. >> the key thing is not to squeeze the body and pop the ticks. you need to gently tease it out. >> thank you very much. if you want the latest health news, you can get it by liking abc2 news. for years, health experts have been telling kids born with just one kidney, that they cannot play sports. a new study shows the risk of injuries were those children are actually very low. researchers from the university of utah looked at more than 4 million high school athletes over a study of two years. >> almost 24,000 injuries, i believe there were 18 kidney injuries. that is extremely low.
