harder after moodys lowers the credit rating of 15 of the world's top banks. >> this is one more sign that the epic banking crisis isn't over. the affected megabanks include the country's top five. moody's believed their long-term prospects for profitability and growth are shrinking. the downgrade means it will cost the banks more to borrow money and do business. something that will directly affect american consumers. >> it is not good news for banks because it puts them in a weaker position if the world and the u.s. economy were to continue its slowdown. it makes it more difficult and more expensive for consumers to get loans on everything from cars to mortgages to small businesses. >> reporter: the downgrade adds to the unease which has been plaguing global markets and raises questions about the banks' ability to withstand the debt crisis in europe. but analysts say this is not a repeat of 2008. and these banks are not on the merge of going out of business. they have knowned a tbt the

downgrade for a few months and have had time to prepare. but the news followed big losses in the markets here in the u.s. the dow fell 2% yesterday. and this morning, asian markets saw a steep decline, as well. >> they deserve it for years of mismanagement, and speculative trading activities. all these major international banks being downgraded. and to a more realistic level. >> reporter: this downgrade comes on the heels of federal reserve chairman ben bernanke's sharply reduce chance of growth on friday, and promised action by the fed if the u.s. economy grows slower further. >> we're ready to take steps to recovery in the labor market. >> now, the banks are pushing back. saying they expected the ratings change. and have put safeguards in place to protect themselves from major losses. breaking news from afghanistan this morning. taliban fighters attacked a

lakeside hotel near kabul overnight, trading gunfire with police, and holding hostages, including women and children. the standoff lasted until this morning when the attackers were killed. but 4 officers and 12 civilians also died. the taliban spokesman tweeted they attacked because alcohol was being served there. now, to the jerry sandusky child molestation trial. the jurors begin their first full day of deliberations this morning. but we know something they do not. that sandusky's own adopted son has joined the ranks of the accusers. abc's t.j. winick reports from bellefonte, pennsylvania. >> reporter: jerry sandusky's 33-year-old adopted son, matt, until now his biggest supporter, says he, too, was molested by his father. why wasn't he called as a state witness. sources say matt was waiting in the wings in case sandusky decided to testify and would be used as a rebuttal witness. >> you put a witness like that on the witness stand, they are

open to strong cross-examination because of inconsistent statements. first, you said you weren't. now, you say you are. which is the truth? >> reporter: the fate of the former penn state assistant football coach is now in the hands of the jury. during an impassioned closing argument, defense attorney joe amendola reck recollected how the defense statements changed. i will tell you if he did it, he should rot in jail for the rest of his life. but what if he didn't do it. the lead prosecutor then got his turn. ending his argument with a flourish. recalling the ten alleged victims, eight of whom testified in the past two weeks. look at the evidence, he said, stand right behind sandusky. you can't give them back his souls. he knows he did it. give them justice. and give him the justice he deserves. find him guilty. late thursday night, jurors asked to review the testimony of mike mcqueary and mcqueary's neighbor, who he told he thought

united states because the rating service is worried about europe's debt crisis. so are overseas investors. tokyo's nikkei average fell 26 points today. hong kong's hang seng was off 257. and in london, the ftse opening lower. on wall street, the dow plunging 251 points yesterday, almost 2 percentage points. the nasdaq index lost 71. and mortgage rates have hit another record low. a 30-year fixed rate loan averages $3.66. a 15-year mortgage is 2.95%. those are the lowest rate since long-term mortgages began in the 1950s. and freddie mac says we're going to be seeing low interest rates for a while. do you remember the warnings of $5 gas? a respected oil analyst says we should see $3 gas by thanksgiving. low crude oil prices and slumping demand. the national average this morning is less than $3.50. tesla, today, delivers its

first mass market all-electric car, the 30s. it has a range of 265 miles per charge. tes tesla's counting on the auto to make money nor the company. the online world is all atwitter over the site service outages. twitter says it was an internal problem, a, quote, cascading bug. whatever that's supposed to be. the result was no service off and on throughout the day yesterday for web and mobile users. twitter claim that a hacker caused it isn't true. and smartphones may be replacing pacifiers for crying babies. a british survey says three-times as many mothers hand their kid a phone than a pacifier. only two out of five moms say they actually limit the amount of time their kids can play with digital devices. >> yeah. a little older ones want to play on it. the other ones will put it in their mouth, like everything

you're looking at a dramatic river rescue in vermont. the young couple there was fishing when the wife lost her footing. her husband went in after her. and they were both swept over a waterfall. amazingly, they survived a 20-foot drop with just some minor cuts. >> i've been wanting to go to vermont. maybe not so much now. i'm just not that daring. now, for a look at morning road conditions.

closing in on 450,000 bucks. southwest airlines has donated nine airline tickets to send her to disneyland. now, to a tragic story that's developing in washington state. a park ranger at mt. rainier has fallen to his death. the ranger, 34-year-old nick hall, was helping with a rescue operation, when he slid down the mountain more than 3,000 feet. he was trying to save four injured climbers when he fell. three of the climbers were flown to safety. the fourth is expected to be rescued today. and police are trying to unravel the mysterious disappearance of a florida millionaire. guma aguiar's fishing boat. it came ashore on a beach. but he was nowhere to be found. the successful businessman and father of four is in the middle of a divorce. his wife told police she thought he was at home. but an employee confirmed his boss did go out on that boat. for the first time we're hearing george zimmerman's side
