you're watching the station that works for you "good morning maryland" at 4:30. this morning people are still out of their homes from a massive brush pyre in queenanne's county. the progress firefighters are making. >> and in more than 12 hours the body of a maryland marine will arrive in dover. olympic swim pg champ michael phelps competing for his spot in the summer games. >> we start with severe weather happening in the southern u.s. one death being reported from the storms coming ahead of tropical storm debby a woman died in florida near lake placid in the central part of the state. the child was injured from the storms. parts of florida and alabama under watch as tropical storm debby makes her way towards the gulf region. all of that straight ahead. it's june 25th good morning i am charley crowson. >> i am megan pringle. lynette will cover that but she's got a look at our forecast in maryland.

>> that's right. good morning you two. let's talk about tropical storm debby. once again it's in the gulf of mexico nearly stationary. we see the lines, your plots of your spaghetti plots telling you where it's going. the last time we showed you this, it was looking leek a spire. some going off towards the right and some to the left. now it locks like it's going to stay off towards -- looks leek it's going to stay off to the east. that's good news. but it's not going to be moving for a while. dumping lots of ran across florida and also more of that in georgia. and even alabama. but right now, maryland's most powerful radar is pretty much dry at home. we have a thunderstorm earlier this morning but the bulk of the precipitation is to the north. traveling into pennsylvania, you will see heavy rain and that will begin to die down to the south heading through the remainder of the morning and this afternoon. temperature wise this morning, we are coming in at close to # 0 in aberdeen and 7 -- 70 in aberdeen and 70 in bel air. here lauren cook with the

traffic. >> reporter: good morning. construction continues on 895. it's south of the harbor tunnel toll plaza but right now it's not causing too many delays. speeds at 54 miles per hour. this will change later in the morning. stick with the fort mchenry or key bridge as alternate. heading to 83, here's northern baltimore county at shawan road. no delays to talk about. it will be a nice easy ride towards the beltway. and heading down to 95, just 4 minutes traveling southbound from route 43 to the beltway. beltway nice and clear. outer loop from 95 towards 83 will take you 11 minutes and you are looking at 12 minute ride from 795 towards 95. that's a look at your abc2 timesaver traffic now over to you. huge brush burning in parts of queen anne's county. >> 50 people were evacuated because the smoke was so bad. linda so is monitoring the situation and joins with us the latest. any word when people can return back home? >> reporter: i got off the

phone with fire dispatchers and they say they are hoping to allow people back this morning. they will have a meeting in a few hours to assess the situation and decide if it's safe. the brush fire is burning but it's contained. firefighters are no longer at the scene. just workers with the forestry department are out there. the fire broke out sunday morning in a wooded area that produced heavy smoke. one firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion. people were evacuated from the homes because the health risk from the smoke. no homes were damaged but the fire could take days to knockout. >> i am a little concerned i live a quarter of a mile in from here and i didn't know if it would jump the road and threaten my house.>> reporter: fire officials say the risk to homes is minimal. the road is closed and the kent island elks lodge is a shelter. we will let you know when and if fire officials decide to let people back in.

linda so abc2 news. we are not the the only one dealing with dry conditions crews this colorado are continuing to contain a fire. they didn't make much progress during the weekend. the fire scorched 2,000 acres thus far. thousands remain out of their homes. >> the winds around here could change dramatically and that could really push it up against the points that we are trying to protect or it could leap and start on ridges. it's the greatest natural threat we have seen in the community in the last 30, 40 years. >> investigators are saying it is too early to say what sparked that fire. >> news time 4:34. and happening today the body of a local marine is set to arrive in delaware. gene c mills died on friday during combat operations in afghanistan. 22 years old he he was assigned to the first battalion 8th marine reg ment out of camp lejeune. i was can -- he was in

afghanistan for five months and was serving his second tour of duty and his body will arrive tonight around 5:30. man accused of murdering a 6-year-old boy more than 30 years ago is expected in court today. pedro hernandez was arrested in may for the death of etan patz who disappeared on his way to cook in 1979. -- way to school in 1979. also due in court the former nursing student who went on a shooting rampage in april in california. he is charged with seven counts of murder and pled not guilty and is due in court for a pretile hearing. the 4th of july falls on wednesday but plenty of people still going to be heading out the weekend before. aaa is set to unveil the local travel projection thursday for the upcoming weekend. aaa predicts more people will hit the roads this year about 42 million the projection.

falling gas price also help those looking to get out of town. the national average for a gallon of regular unleaded is about $3.45. so were you one of the lucky ones this weekend with the blessing at the pumps? at all costs mysteries in glen burnie took off 27 cents a gallon at a shell station off ritchey highway. it cost the church a few thousand dollars but hopes the pay back will turn into a christian message at all cost ministries which gives away gas several times during the year. we are keeping a close eye on the gulf coast as people are seeing what direction debby will head. >> this water spout is oneexample of how strong the storms can be. we have more on debby's impact coming up. now "good morning maryland" at 4:30. 4:39 and new video this morning. look at this water spout down in jupiter, florida. this is home video of the spout taken less than 12 hours ago. look at that lynette. storms associated with tropical storm debby again we have learned overnight one woman has died as a result of the storms in florida. >> tropical storm debby the video is amazing and people are paying close attention to the wild fires out west what's going on here? >> debby is not moving. dumping lots of rein across pourings of florida.

and you know, some places need it but you don't want all the rain. you get lots of flooding. they could see about 15 inches of rainfall. so, yeah, here, we are looking pretty good. it's not making to our neck of the words. you can see dube in the -- debby if the gulf of mexico. it's one-sided and the reasonwhy is sheer has been happening. so sheer the changing of the winds with height and it's blowing it all off toward the north and east. that's why they are dealing with heavy rainfall amounts there. and then we slide a little further to home and we are not seeing that here. but we do have a chance for showers and thunderstorms to move back into the picture as we head through the morning hours. also the afternoon time frame. storm prediction center has us in a slight risk for severe weather. gusty wind and also large hail possible with that. now we look at the fact that temperatures are on the mild side this morning. we are looking at 70sins in -- 70sin germantown. let's check the traffic with

temperature wise, we are quite warm this morning coming in at 74 in chestertown and center krill around 73. -- center krill at 73. the wind -- centerville at 73. it will be on the breezy side through remainder -- remainder of today. the baltimore city council will vote on the mayor he's proposed budget. >> they took a preliminary vote and 9 council members voted in favor of the budget five against. if it passes 3 fire companies would close and a number of rec centers will close. sherrie johnson will have more on how it could impact taxpayers coming up in the next half-hour. he is in jail right now but could more charges come forward against former penn state assistant football coach jerry sandusky. that depends on the sentencing. he was found guilty of 45 of the 48 charges against him. he faces more than 400 years in prison. an assistant da in pennsylvania

says an appeal is likely and several suits will follow there. are a few more trials to get underway for former penn state athletic directo tim curley and vice president gary schultz. a hearing is set for those on july 11th. new this morning, several new jersey police officers and port authority workers are recovering from smoke inhalation following a small fire at an x-ray machine in new york laguardia airport. the fire caused a brief evacuation of the terminal last night. and passengers were allowed back in within the last hour. within an hour rather. no word on what caused the fire this morning. >> don't worry, the electricbill has been paid but right now the board of visitors for the university of virginia are meeting tomorrow to talk about the dismissal of the current president teresa sullivan. thousands came out yesterday calling on the board to reverse the decision and let her go. 27 speakers from dean to professors and students came out on campus showing their support for the outgoing

president. >> we came to uva because of it's great legacy of honor and integrity and the history. and that's trampled upon in our view. >> i hope the board can see how much support there is for sullivan. >> sullivan resigned two weeks ago over "philosophical difference with board members." around the nation right now, a deadly crash in oregon shut down a highway for several hours. the truck involved which had a huge mess. the truck driver was pronounced dead at scene. a church bus slammed in back of the truck. investigators are trying to figure out what caused the crash. a dallas mother facing charges accused of trying to sell her baby boy. police say the woman posted a classified ad offering the baby for 6500 dollars. a florida woman saw the ad and intended to adopt the baby but was concerned and called

you have people that need it and depend on things and they have no way to get it. so you have to have people helping them out. >> we live in a generous community. and every time that a charity has called upon our community, they have been forthcoming and all k say is thank you and -- can say is thank you and don't stop. all right. let's take about what's going on in terms of weather. because we are looking at temperatures on the mild side this morning. look at the 70s we are seeing around baltimore right now. and also dc. 73 in easton along the eastern shore. and we see 60s back off toward the north and west in hagerstown and winchester and culpepper. satellite and radar not picking up on a lot close to home a round of showers and thunderstorms that moved through the area. they are off into the atlantic. but going to the north, that's where you are dealing with more showers and storms there and some of those will begin to dive down to the south. so we will get wet once again as we go through the morning and the afternoon. so with that, the storm prediction center does have us in the slight risk for severe

weather. so, the biggest threat would be damaging wind and also large hail for the areas there shaded in the yellow color. also, we are talking about tropical storm debby. the wind this is the new update. the last time the wind were sustained at about 60 miles an hour, now the wind sustained at about 50 miles an hour. but it's not moving at all. still stationary but the path tax it off towards the north and east. once gone we are looking at jacksonville getting in on that action and portions of alabama and even georgia. georgia need some of the wet weather and that's good news for them. we look at our weather pattern for today. and we are watching the cold front. this is going to traverse the area going through time. and it will knock temperatures down a little bit for tomorrow. and again bring us showers and storms forethe forecast for today and high -- forecast for today and high pressure will build n future trend pick -- build in. future trend is picking up on showers and storms.
