tornadoes cut paths threw our state. none more damaging that the one on route 1 in bel air. keith matthews was picked up and slammed down by the tornado. it sent the concrete walls toppling down on top of him. he's finally out of the hospital and talked with joce sterman during an exclusive interview. >> reporter: keith matthews detailing shop still show a few scars from the tornado that leveled it, but none compared to the ones on his body. the 44-year-old has a rod in his leg, a permanent souvenir of survival. >> that was a small tornado, you know. it still turned cars up and down, still ripped garage doors off. it still can bust concrete in half. >> landed here. >> landed me here in this bed. >> reporter: this is where keith

will be staying for the next few weeks as he recover from his injuries. he was hurt when an f1 tornado tore through fallston and tore apart his garage. >> there wasn't any time for -- i bet you couldn't count to two before it was all done and over. >> reporter: it was over in an instant. when it was all said and done he was trabbed under the wall in any and terrified. >> wondered did inbound see me -- anybody see me. >> reporter: his new normal means some adjustments. friends built a wheelchair ramp at his house. >> don't know how many friends you got until you got hurt. the next thing you know, they come out of every where. >> reporter: as they rally around keith, he's pulling together the strength to move

congressional leaders say they have finally reached an agreement so your student loan doesn't double. let's go live to abc2 news karen travers who will talk to us nice and slowly to explain this deal. karen? >> reporter: good evening, jamie. it is certainly complicated and the clock is ticking. lawmakers say they're close to a deal to prevent student loan interest rates from doubling on july 1st. the class of 2012 left their college campuses with diplomas and massive amounts of student loan debt. >> i have over $100,000 of loans. >> $120,000. >> reporter: it's up 45% since 1993. the average debt -- $23,000 per student. >> it is our only option to succeed in america. it's scary.

>> reporter: now the clock is ticking for congress to help them from spending mormt interest raids on stafford loans are expected to double on july 1st unless lawmakers act. it could be extended for at least another year. as is the case with some other issues here in washington, the fight boils down to how to pay for. this young voters are a key voting block and they within the overwhelmingly for president obama in 2008. the president has kept up a steady drum beat. >> this should be a no-brainer. >> reporter: mr. obama scolded congress for once again playing chicken with the deadline. >> congress has had the time to fix this for months. it's part of the reason why everybody here looks impatient. >> reporter: about 7.4 million
