this morning, superfire. >> in colorado, hundreds of homes reduced to ash. lives put on hold by those fast-moving flames. but there is some good news in the firefight from overnight. reform ruling. it's decision day at the supreme court. the final verdict on health care, set to impact nearly every american. also this morning, breakdown. tsa agents fired for failing to properly check bags. even sleeping on the job. and we are a nation of believers. you're not alone if you think aliens are out there. or if they're already here. good thursday morning, everyone. we begin, once again, this

morning with that devastating wildfire that's scorching areas in colorado springs, colorado. >> the widespread destruction. look at this. that's an aerial view of one neighborhood in colorado springs, courtesy of the "denver post" before the fire. and then, an estimated 300 homes reduced to ash. >> officials aren't saying how in homes have been lost. but here's what we do know. the fire has burned at least 29-square miles. more than 30,000 people have been forced to evacuate. and firefighters got help overnight as winds reportedly calmed somewhat. and for those out of their homes, it's all a guessing game. >> i walked outside. i could see the flames coming down the side of the mountain. >> i'm running on, like, no sleep. and a lot to take in. >> president obama will tour scorched areas of colorado tomorrow. and that's when he might sign a

disaster declaration that will clear the way for even more federal aid into the area. fbi investigators, meanwhile, are part of a people working to determine if any of colorado's wildfires were deliberately set. the east coast is now getting a taste of the extreme heat that's been roasting the plains and the midwest. more than 1,000 record highs have fallen in the past week alone. and heat advisories and warnings have been posted in nearly two dozen states. now, the hottest spot on the globe yesterday was hill city, kansas, where it hit a whopping 115 degrees. and in slachicago, the city i l, they could top 102. the city has had 15 days of 90-degree heat. the most ever this early in the season. >> unbelievable. our other major story this morning, the much-anticipated decision by the nation's highest court on health care reform. that ruling will likely impact

millions of americans. abc's tahman bradley is at the supreme court and joins us this morning with much more. >> reporter: today, we expect the final decision about the constitutionality of president obama's health care law. the stakes, robs could not be higher. it's one of the most anticipated supreme court ruling in years and will directly affect the lives of every american. the care act, the achievement of obama's first term. >> i believe that health care reform was the right thing to do. >> reporter: but americans are deeply divided. only one-third of americans have a favorable upon of the health care law. the supreme court could uphold the entire law or strike it down. or the justices could rule against part of it. perhaps the individual mandate that requires most americans buy insurance by 2014 or pay a penalty.

opponents argue congress doesn't have the authority to make americans buy something. whatever the court decides, this woman and her son will feel the impact. >> i'm concerned that once it's overturned their going to look into his medical history and drop him. >> reporter: ethan was born with a vascular tumor. she is worried how insurance companies might treat her son if the health care law is struck down. but the law's requirement that small businesses insure all employees will keep jorge from hiring new workers. >> it will be impacting us. >> reporter: the court's decision will have a profound impact politically. >> if it's not constitutional, the first term will have been wasted. >> reporter: if the supreme court does not strike down the entire law, they'll work to repeal what's left. democrats say, if it is struck down, they'll pressure republicans to come up with another solution to health care.

>> we can't emphasize how wide-spread the impact will be, when it comes to the elderly, to medicaid, young adults under 26. and also an impact on women. >> women pay more for health care, in some instances, a lot more than men. and also, women's health advocates say it's a pre-existing condition to be a woman. a woman who had a cesarean section, she might not be eligible for any kind of health care. there's a lot riding on this decision for women and for the entire country, rob. >> tahman bradley, at the supreme court today. we have live coverage coming up. with diane sawyer and george stephanopoulos, at 10:00 a.m. stay tuned for that. most of the attention in washington will be focused on the supreme court. a political battle will be playing out on capitol hill. a house committee is expected to find that eric holder is in contempt of congress for

refusing to turn over the documents relating to the "fast and furious" gun tracking program. and both sides on the hill have agreed to keep student loan interest rates at their current level. the rates were scheduled to double over the weekend. the plan will be folded into a bill to fund a major overhaul of the transportation system. bipartisanship was on display at the congressional picnic. both sides and their families gathered on the white house for a feast of sorts. the president made a special to thank the families and children for the sacrifices they make. time for the weather across the nation. as we mentioned, the heat is on from the rockies all the way to the east coast. showers in northern new england and south florida. thunderstorms around chicago, green bay and detroit. evening rain from seattle to portland. >> 70s in the pacific northwest. triple digits again in the fire zone in colorado. not what they want to hear. mostly 90s, though, for the rest

bernie madoff's brother faces ten years in prison for his role in that multibillion-dollar ponzi scheme. peter madoff is the former chief compliance officer at the private investment arm of bernard madoff's business. as part of the plea deal, the younger madoff has agreed to give up $143 billion, including all of his real estate, as well as his personal property. and there is another attempt today to resolve the european debt crisis. european leaders are meeting in brussels with some pretty sharp disagreement over how to handle the situation. any breakthrough will lynn j on germany. but it's doubtful there will be one. overseas markets are up today. tokyo's nikkei average was up 144 points today. hong kong's hang seng was down 96. in london, the ftse opened higher. and on wall street, the dow gained 92 points yesterday. the nasdaq index picked up 21. the state of california has

a new budget this morning, aimed at helping close a $15 billion short fall. the spending plan includes welfare and social service cuts. it will hinge on a governor's tax hike. and alabama could see more high-tech jobs soon. airbus reportedly plans to build an assembly plant for its a-320 plane in alabama. airbus hopes that will help it land more u.s. orders. announcement is expected on monday. google is getting into the computer hardware business. its first tablet called the nexus 7, will go on sale next month. and apple's ipad, of course, is the tablet to beat. the nexus 7 seems to be aimed at the lower end of the market, as well as at the kindle fire. they start about 200 bucks. the google tablet will run the newest android operating system,

after this freak accident down in south florida. a u.p.s. truck ended up floating in the middle of biscayne bay. the driver was making routine deliveries when his truck hit a tree, and crashed through a guardrail. the uninjured driver managed to crawl from the truck and wade back to shore. >> he's going to be buying a water-proof package. now, a look at road conditions. slick at time along some south florida highways. a wet ride in northern new england. and thunderstorms could dampen roads around chicago, detroit and green bay. >> if you're flying today, the weather shouldn't be getting in your way. airport delays are only expected in paula's favorite city of chicago. >> i love the windy city. well, now, to a -- that almost turned into a family tragedy. >> a scary story. a man was arrested in kentucky after forgetting his 2-year-old son in his car for two hours. kenneth robinson was supposed to

sleeping in bag rooms out of public sight. there's an ongoing investigation into security breaches at newark airport. looks like an aviation mystery that goes back 60 years has been solved. on a k okay search team, has discovered the wreckage of a military transport plane near anchorage. they believe they found the site where an air force globemaster plane went down in 1952, killing all 52 people onboard. starting in august, getting caught with a small amount of pot will no longer lead to an arrest in the city of chicago. maybe that's why you love chicago. 14 states and 17 major cities have decriminalized possession of pot for personal use. and in houston, strip club patrons are being hit with a $5 tax. the money raised will go towards
