debris from friday's storms in the roadways. more traffic and weather in a little bit. as many as 17 people have been confirmed dead as a result of the weekend's storms through half a dozen states and district often columbia, one person confirmed dead in maryland. for more on a family in mourning, the death of their 25- year-old son, linda so. >> reporter: he crashed his car. o'brian's dad thinks his son was on his way home. they knew something was wrong when he didn't responds to text messages or calls. a friend told them what happened. he died at the scene two. friends with him in the car, miller and hodges survived. they were not seriously hurt. the family had to go searching for answers because the roads were blocked off. >> we had to come back and go to the county police station to

power lines. not only is ate driving hazard but it's dangerous. crews have been alerting drivers, you can't come through here. i did see a bge truck come up, which is a good thing. they are going to work on this particular area. i did speak with a man earlier this morning, his kids and family has no power. karen nickels is a woman who lives in the area, she has az ma, bronchitis, no power in her building. she had to sleep in the lobby. she got emotional watching her friend being carried out. >> i have to use inhalers. i have had to use these more. we don't have a generator working. people are sick and can't get out. they are in there.

people have gone out in ambulances. >> reporter: pretty tough for a lot of people waiting for their lights to come on. when you have no power, no power means no air-conditioning and that's going to be a problem today. it's going to be 90 degrees. not as human as we have seen the last few days peevment are feeling kicked in the teeth after another round of storms. bge crews have been out here and they will start working. we will speak to rachel with bge. also this morning, 15 schools have been closed as a result of the power outages. police say a carjacker caused accidents at a cross part. he surrendered to police completely naked. it started with a 3-car crash. he got out of the car naked and

last night's storm. >> what did bge learn from irene that maybe they've been able to implement in to what happened. >> after every storm, we have a lessons learned session where we discuss how we are prioritizing jobs. in addition we have storm drills so we can make sure even of our employees is ready for a storm to hit. >> one of the things we don't know as customers until you tell us, you are get suggest port, bge is getting support from crews in florida and texas, as far as customers go, what would be your message to them relative to patience or manage this. we do thank customers for patience. especially coupled with the heat, it can be frustrating. if you have a new outage, please call the number to repot i. if you have a downed wire,

>> reporter: folks are bracing for more hot temperatures today. the code red heat alert has been extended through tuesday. a lot of folks are trying to find ways to beat the heat. arundel, they have five cooling centers open and 25 people that have utilized the cooling centers, four police district rooms are open. pet stores, pet smart and animal control offed facilities to pets to beat the heat. stephanie rawlings blake passed out ice in a northeast baltimore community. the community action program will operate five centers around the city, each will have cool air and free water. they will operate 6 additional cooling centers. on a code red day, the health department recommends that you

remember to drink water or juice, avoid alcohol and caffeine and try to way light colored clothing -- wear light colored clothing. >> check on those that you know don't have electricity or air- conditioning, make sure they have fans, make sure they have water. our seniors are extremely vulnerable in the heat. there is an increase in emergency room visits for heat exhaustion and heat related injuries. you can also call 311 with a heat related medical emergency and log on to abc2news.com for complete list of the cooling center, their addresses and phone numbers and it's located on the home page. sherrie johnson, abc2 news. the heat is not making things easy for a number of people in oh states. including the state of virginia. national weather service issued more than 100 tornado and severe warnings across the common wealth since wednesday.

dominion power estimates 2.5 million affect by the storms. the widespread damage up and down the east coast and neighboring states added to the problem. the people who normally would be in virginia to help are not here because they are working. >> more than 200 members of the guard have been called in to virginia. the state now has 7 confirmed fatalities due to friday's severe weather. this is a repeated story like you said, mike, doing it all over again. >> the atmosphere is charged up. we got the cool pockets coming out of canada. that interacts with the humidity. we will talk about that in the seven-day forecast. this is downtown, city cam showing us that the skies are clearing after the storms. we got a pretty shot and a nice looking afternoon going forward. couple of scattered showers from dundalk, lake shore, cross over the chesapeake, rock hall, a few showers, not a big deal.
