this morning the mcdonough school community is remembering one of their own after a deadly crash. an investigation -- a look into the investigation of the teen's death. the feds bust a prostitution ring run out of a south baltimore warehouse. a new report on joe paterno's involvement in the penn state sex abuse scandal set to be released tomorrow. what his family is saying this morning about that report. but we begin this wednesday morning, new video overnight from d.c. severe flooding in the area in the northwest part of the city. water and in some places raw sewage stood several inches deep. heavy rains overwhelmed the sewage drains. more than a dozen row homes saw their basements completely flooded out. fire crews had to be call inside to pump out that waste water. an official estimate of that damage could come later on this

wednesday, july 11th. good morning, maryland, i'm charley crowson. megan is off today. we tbin this morning with a check of your forecast with meteorologist lynette charles. >> good morning, charley. good morning, everyone. we look at the headlines and happy hump day to you. we are dry right now with some clouds, warm and humid and we do have areas of patchy fog out there this morning. now, in terms of the wet weather, we look at maryland's most powerful radar, as of now we are pretty much dry. we did have a few isolated showers that popped up in carroll county yesterday and along the eastern shore. for the most part we will be dry today. again, though, we won't rule out a chance for an isolated shower as we go into the afternoon, but much dryer than we were yesterday. but, let me add, we do need that rainfall out there. as we look at the temperatures out there, buoy coming in around 70 degrees, northeast at 67 degrees. we do have another warm day on tap, but it is seasonable. we'll tell you when things really begin to heat back up. now let's get a check of abc 2 news time saver traffic. how are the roads looking? >>reporter: if you are traveling through the fort

after 17-year-old alex gasgaris it it died in a car wreck. the teen died monday night. according to police his 2006 ford fusion hit a tree on green spring avenue about 10:20 p.m. he was heading north above the posted speed limit on green spring avenue approaching high view drive when he spun out of control and went off the road. alec was flown to trauma where he later died. varsity swimmer and a conference champion. besides being an inteur, he was also a member of the north baltimore aquatic club. sheree johnson, abc 2 news. today the baltimore board of estimates is expected to vote on whether to give the fire chief, james clack a raise. he makes about $160,000 and mayor stephanie rawlings blake is proposing to what amounts to a 2% raise and extending clack's contract. this comes on the heels of two city fire companies shutting down monday, truck 15 and squad

11 were closed permanently due to budgetary concerns. this afternoon the parents of a florida a and m university band member who died during a hazing incident will file a lawsuit depends that school. robert champion died after being -- following a beating. 11 people, mostly other band members face felony charges in his death. a long time director of that school's famous band, jillian white, he announced his retirement in may. a baltimore city firefighter is suspended without pay this morning after being arrested in connection with a prostitution ring. police say 29-year-old ja mar simmons along with 34-year-old franklin colt is in custody following that bufd. officers executed a search warrant at a house on south pulaski street in south baltimore earlier this week. inside they found evidence of a prostitution ring. local experts in human trafficking say they're not at all surprised one of the alleged pimps is a firefighter. >> one of the best ways for criminals to operate is to have a daytime persona that seems

legitimate and then on their off hours, on their down time have this other kind of thing going on. >> police say simmons had a sex trafficking charge in 2010. he received probation before judgment that allowed him to keep his job. no word yet this morning on charges for a deadly cecil county crash. the driver of the car a man from pennsylvania slammed into charlotte buoy as she was getting her mail. buoy died at the scene. a new warning for parents out there using baby monitors. the potential hazards those monitors now pose that wouldn't even occur to those who took care of the little ones. also a special lagger coming out of one brewery after last week's rain and power outages. lauren. >>reporter: up to speed here at 695 and hartford road. i'll show you how things are shaping up on 683 coming up on "good morning maryland." you're taking a live look at

luck. bright shining face there. we're going to "caption this"? later? yes. you'll love it. >> give us your caption there. another way we're getting you involved with the show. weather wise, perfect day yesterday. >> it wasn't too bad out there. we did have a little bit of humidity still lingering. it's going to linger into today. temperature right around 90. as we start you out with maryland's most powerful radar this morning, we are nice and dry, all five sweeps on scanning the skies. mostly concerned with the temperatures this morning, coming in at 66 degrees in darlington, denton at 70 degrees and close to 70 in easton. that humidity is up there, you can see them up in the 90s, close to 100% in denton. a little bit of patchy fog. i'll show you those areas coming up. right now let's get back to charlly. new this morning, a u.s. airways flight is now back on its way to rome after being diverted to philadelphia for about two hours. shortly after flight 720 took off from charlotte, north carolina last night, crew members reported feeling ill because of an odor on board that flight. five people were taken to an area hospital for observation.

none of the passengers, though, reported any ill effects. the flight departed philadelphia just after midnight. it is now expected to land in rome in about three hours. maybe 32 is the charm. house republicans are playing the vote today to repeal the affordable healthcare act, also known as obama care. they voted on this 31 times before, but this is the first vote since the u.s. supreme court ruled to uphold that mandate. the american people do not want to go down the path of obama care. that's why we voted over 30 times to repeal it, to fund it, replace it. and we are resolved to have this law go away, and we're going to do anything we can to stop it. >> it appears the 30-second verse will be the same as the 31st. any house repeal effort is expected to die in the democratic-led u.s. senate. in the meantime, howard county executive ken olman is holding a news conference today, explaining how to implement the affordable healthcare act. he's talking about the new tools to assist people in the

process of assessing the healthcare under the new law. speaking of healthcare, white house officials say the federal health insurance is now being made available to about 8,000 temporary wildland firefighters. seasonal firefighters make up more than half of the crews on the federal payroll, but aren't allow today buy into the federal health plans. they spent weeks battling those fierce fires in colorado at the end of june, lasting well into the current month. a potentially explosive report on the penn state sex abuse scandal is due out tomorrow. it looks at whether football coach joe paterno and other top penn state officials tried to conceal that jerry sandusky was a child molester. paterno's family released a statement yesterday saying the late coach did not cover up for sandusky. that report is going to be published online. a consumer alert for you this morning, for parents with children. the federal government now looking at the baby monitors and the potential hazard for your infant. the consumer product safety commission says at least seven children have died in the past decade because they've been strangled by the cords.

parents are now being urged to keep monitors out of the reach and away from cribs and also from play pens. that's not just true for electric line cords on monitors, it's true for drapery cords and window pliends and any other corded equipment around the nursery. keep them out of the child's reach. >> incredible. warning labels are now being affixed to the baby monitor cords and other corded devices so that caregivers are reminded to place it as far away as possible from the baby's grasp. news around the nation this morning, we all know how annoying stink bugs can be from time to time, and now they're threatening wine crops in oregon. those invasive little insects have a big appetite for almost against most pesticides. can they destroyed crops in other parts of the u.s., now wine growers fear they could be next. researchers are trying to find ways to kill off the stink bugs without harming the vegetation. a woman in washington state is now crediting her dog with saving her life after she was attacked by a group of

raccoons. michael lee walks on a nature trail near her home all the time. one morning she was walking her dog when she came upon a group of five raccoons. they charged her, catcherring her and biting her more than 100 times. i'm down on the ground, i'm bleeding, i'm going into shock, my teeth are chattering. now, the attack ended when her dog beared its teeth and growled at the raccoons. that dog growled. lee says she'll continue for her walks but for now she's going to be bringing along pepper spray on that trip. crime certainly doesn't bay and it certainly didn't for a suspect thief in ohio. police say the man was try to go break into a substation to steal copper wiring and he caught fire, literally. witnesses say the man was engulfed in flames and they immediately called 911. emergency crews rushed the thief to a hospital. his condition is not known. it is now 4:49. time for a check of that forecast once again. it was a great day out there, lynette, a little south of us, though, they had some heavy

rain. >> exactly. that's all courtesy of that stationary front, charley. i'm going to show you that in just a second. speaking of the wet weather to the south, closer to home we are nice and dry. for the most part we should stay that way for today, maybe an isolated shower north of i- 95 as we go into the afternoon. but right now things looking pretty good. yes, we do have am so clouds out there this morning, but we will get that cloud/sun mix later on today. we're a little bit on the humid side this morning. you can see these dewpoints for yourself, as we look at 67 in baltimore, 69 in d.c. and you know when we get into the mid- 60s, the upper 60s we are feeling it. as we look at the visibility issues, yes, there's some. we do have some patchy fog in pennsylvania, york and also winchester. culpepper looking at that as well, only three miles of reduced visibility. so if your travels are taking you that way this morning, just be prepared for that. temperatures are on the warm side this morning, coming in at 72 degrees right now in baltimore, 74 in d.c., and we're looking at 71 right now

in hagueerstown. here's the weather pattern. here's the stationary front still draped across the area. it has sagged a little bit further to the south than yesterday, but, again, along this frontal system we will begin to have those showers and thunderstorms firing up all day. again, if this moves a little bit further to the north, we do have a better chance for some showers and thunderstorms as we go into the afternoon. future trend basically going to pick up on that fact. as we stop this around 4:00, well, again, west of i-95, that's when we have the better chance for some showers and thunderstorms as we go into the afternoon. what we do have is an area of high pressure off into the atlantic, so we will begin to get an easterly flow in here. but it's at the surface, so with that we will get the sinking air. sinking air not having too many clouds form and with that you're not going to get too much rain. just be prepare ford that as we go through time. 90 degree ss what i'm going with today. it is going to be a warm day on tap. but that's what we expect in summertime, right? we look at the seven-day forecast for you and we can see what's going on. 85 degrees as we head into friday, but that's when the better chance for some showers and storms will work their way

into the picture. but we get much hotter, 90s, mid-90s as we head into next week. let's get a check now of the traffic with lauren cook. good morning. how are the roads, pretty quiet right now? >>reporter: yes, lynette, quiet in howard county, nothing in your way on interstate. nice and clear from colombia pike all the way over to 695. in anne arundel county, interstate 95 no problems to report there either. here's a live look at the beltway. no problems traveling north or even southbound towards route 50. als we pull up some drive times you'll notice no delays on the west side of the beltway. nine minutes on the outer loop from 795 down towards 95. if you are using the jfx to get into the city, it's going to take you lech minutes as well to travel from the beltway all the way downtown to east fayette street. no concerns this morning on 95 at the fort mchenry tunnel, traveling north from the beltway all the way to the toll plaza, you're looking at an eight-minute trip. that's a look at abc 2 news time saver traffic. charley, over to you. there are secrets in the nation's capitol. halfway between the capitol and the white house are a handful
