picks up the story. >> reporter: open mic night at cheers lounge turned deadly when a man stepped outside, pulled a gun from his pocket and opened fire on the crowd. >> they said they heard several shots real fast in a row. there was no fighting outside or argument between the two. he just shot the person. >> reporter: 36-year-old david garrett of sykesville died from wounds, and a second victim, gary hail offed wood stock caught a bullet in his arm. he was medevaced to the shock trauma center and expected to survive. it has long been a watering hole attracting primarily locals in the area. >> we might have had i can count on my hand in 20 years, five little scuffles. >> reporter: witnesses say while no words were exchanged , the gunman had been acting strangely prior to the

shooting. he was around a pool table and watching them play pool and seemed a little weird and different and strange or something. didn't seem normal but he didn't cause problems. >> reporter: since he was knew, workers held onto the credit card so they could run a tab and the police used it to track him down hours later. >> the phone number was identified, troopers were able to talk with the suspect. he was convinced to give himself up. he gave himself up after 7:00 this morning. >> abc2 news, abc2 news. garrett had returned to carroll county after spending time in seattle and investigators are said to be looking in to the possibility he may have encountered the alleged shooter in washington state. look at this, a 3 alarm fire has kept firefighters busy most of the day after flames and smoke gutted this apartment building. we have learned that the fire caused more than a billion dollars in damages , the fire started in fair land on castle

boulevard. it left 70 people without a place to stay. >> reporter: a frightening friday morning for residents as fire ripped through the 3-story building leaving some people with no way out. fire officials say the blaze began around 7:30 in the back of one of the bottom units and quickly climbed. ronda and her pregnant daughter were stranded on the balcony. as firefighters woked to get them down, marlin banks stepped in to help. now more than 70 people are

displaced after what many are calling a scary situation. baltimore county police say a man pulled a sword on an officer and it cost that man his life. the 17 year veteran was executing a search warrant in connection with attempted murder case last naight in reisterstown on high mode doe road. officials say ronald melvin cox jr. had a sword and swung its that officer who shot cox. he died at the scene. the officer is now placed on routine administrative leave. tonight a 15-year-old boy is in critical condition after found floating in a pool in cockeysville yesterday. the teen was found in the saddle brook apartments pool. people pulled him out of the water and began cpr. he doctors said it was serious enough to sends him to shock trauma. we will follow the story as more information comes out. overcast skies helped keep the temperatures in the 80s.

cranking, 96 degrees, central oklahoma, the heat is going to come at us in to the weekend and much of next week. heat wave number three. there was outrage and little appreciation. you have your chance to let bge know how they handled the power outages. the public service commission will hold hearings to go over how utilities handled the outages from the storms. 8 public hearings in august. legislation style hearings are scheduled for september 13th and 14th. we are learning more about what happened behind the scenes during the penn state child sex abuse scandal. there are several visual reminders including the football building where the boys were abused and the brands substitute of joe paterno and the library named after him. leaders are trying to determine how to deal with the imagery,

long crack down on texting while driving and it's happening here in arundel county. police will combine forces with state police, annapolis pd and crofton law enforcement to run specific traffic details to look for, warn and even ticket distracted drivers. the arundel county police department says texting while driving can impede traffic or be down right deadly. this county wide operation is to get that point across. we are here to try to prevent life altering or fatal crashes. this is about educating the public. we are going to hand out warnings and tell the drives about the dangers and behavior patterns. >> reporter: if a ticket is issued, that's 70 bucks and a pint on your license. so far, since the law went in to effect in october, arundel handed out 22 electronic tickets and almost 50 warnings, this particular operation may

boost the numbers a bit and they hope awareness to the problem as well. brian kuebler, abc2 news. now if an officer sees you texting they can't pull you over just for that. here an officer can pull you over foreseeing you texting. other cell phone laws are secondary, an officer has to see you breaking another law before they can pull you over. knowing how to avoid distracted driving is one of the ways to stay safe on the road if you do have to talk on phone while driving, avoid overly stressful or emotional conversations if you need to pull off to the side of the road , the same goes for looking a map or gps, if you have to look down to see where you are going, you are not looking at the road. another thing that many people do as well is to eat behind the wheel , the best multitaskers even need to focus while driving.

you may want to be careful what you say on facebook, someone is watching and screening your conversations out there. joce sterman joins us now with more. >> always watching. they don't want to know anything that goes on in your life, but facebook says this is about protecting children. the company says it wants to screen for pedophiles. facebook uses equations to find suspicious behavior, security experts with the company found a youth pastor and a coach that were using fake accounts to try and become friends with children. facebook contacted the fbi in both of the cases. the site scans every picture uploaded to the site to see if it matches photos it knows to be child porn from the crime information center. facebook says there are several other things they look out for as well. like if 80% of your friend requests go to women, if you ch birth date to go under and over 18, they notice that as well.

complex disorder, causing disruption in people's ability to communicate and socialize. it's a problem that's growing. >> autism rates are one in 88, nobody knows why. >> reporter: science center, dr. ray palmer taking a new approach to studying autism. using discarded baby teeth. donated teeth from children with and without autism are ground up in to powder and put through a process. it can reveal pesticides, plastics and medicine the child was exposed to in the womb and as they grew. >> it looks at blood or hair, analysis, that's a snapshot in time of recent exposure. it doesn't provide historical record like the teeth do. >> reporter: this kind of research is called tooth fairy

studies. many scientists believe a genetic predispoization combined with environmental exposure triggers autism. >> ist one of the most severe epidemics affecting children. it's way overdue. >> officials are investigating three case of hand, foot and mouth disease. that involve children. the cases have been diagnosed in the last two weeks. mouth sores, skin rash and five. doctors say the virus can spread from surfaces touched by the patients. >> the way it is cycles around is in the summer. it is almost always a summer virus. >> health experts say the virus is mostly a summer virus and disappears in late summer or early fall. doctors say the best way to avoid the disease is wash your hands regularly. >> colorado cantaloupes are back in supermarkets after a listeria outbreak. almost a year ago 30 people
