door neighbor billy banham said something was wrong. >> i smelled smoke. walked through my house to the deck and coy seat flames shooting out the back of his house. >> reporter: a professional photographer, john gallagher captured these images as fire consumed the roof. more than three dozen firefighters responded to the scene. fortunately, neighbors say the homeowner, a 72-year-old man, wasn't home at the time. from the back of the home you can see where fire consumed the roof and much of the second floor. >> all the furniture is gone and the back is really bad. >> reporter: for now the home sun inhabitable. it's estimated it will take six months before repairs can be completed and the owner will be able to move back in. we're told lightning can produce a temperature up to 50,000

screaming. we saw people running. a number of pete were hit by the aftershock of this and went running past us. >> two men were standing and a tree in atlanta when a lightning strike knocked them to the ground. the shock was enough to send one into cardiac aremember, eventually killing them. >> my children are missing their father. >> the other man in the georgia incident regained consciousness. the san antonio news reports the chance of getting hit by lightning in a year is one in a million and in a lifetime is one in 10,000. >> as jamie said, the lightning strikes are rare but they do happen. an average of 54 people are killed each year from lighting

working together. the department of public works has started work on three sections of a water main in southwest baltimore. the main sits on a vacant railroad property but the department of public works discovered the potential for a major failure. crews are using the latest technology to examine the largest water mains hoping to avoid dangerous and costly breaks. the main has been deactivated for repairs which may slightly lower the water pressure. work is expected to be completed coming up in about two weeks. howard county police are searching for the man who shot his estranged girlfriend and another nan in a -- man in a salon. >> reporter: first of all, both shooting victims are listed in much better conditions tonight but the suspect is still on the

evening. take a look at the clouds. otherwise, mostly clear skies. right around 8:00, 93 degrees. it will not be sunny. on the way to 76. 96 degrees with the humidity. s in a couple of scattered showers to the north. there is a cold front draped over the northern plains. this is what will come at us by wednesday. it could produce severe weather. take a look at the country as a whole. everyone in the 90s. 100-degree heat over the plains. by wednesday the cold front comes closer to the area. we can't rule out the chance for

80s with full on sunshine. wednesday we'll be watching. dr. dallas dance, the new superintendent of baltimore county public schools is already at work. he's working to move the baltimore county school system forward. at 31 years old, he's the youngest superintendent in buccaneer bawfnlgt sherrie johnson sat down in a one-on-one interview with dr. dance. >> reporter: dr. dallas dance is the new superintendent of baltimore county public schools. he's already hard at work, working to make it one of the best school systems in the country. with his proactive approach and the help of the staff and the community, he said team bcps can get job done. >> our academic indicators point that that. i hear from my parents in hour community, they want a great

school system. they want to be nationally known. >> reporter: although dr. dance officially started on july 1st. he's been hard at work before then. he traveled to the school district meeting with teachers, faculty and students on a listening tour. he's a man with a plan and it's called blueprint 2.0. he plans to improve curriculum development, growth and communication. he wants people to understand the message of where baltimore county public schools is going. >> our district's goal is to become the best school system in the country. >> reporter: he comes from houston, texas, where he was chief middle schools officers of the independent school district. he distinguishes himself as a steady leader with problem solving and human relations skills. at 3 1-rbgs he's the youngest superintendent baltimore county has seen in many years but he doesn't let this sway his focus. >> the conversation has to

switch. and what it takes to run an organization. that's leader ship, visionary, and there have been many individual wls mountains of experience who have not been successful but i think you have to look at the skill set of man individual before you look at age or any other criteria. >> reporter: disans is anxious to get into more classrooms to talk with teachers and faculty. he said visiting schools keep him grounded and this school system can become the best. >> it's not one person leading the-- district. we're paul leaders. >> now dr. dance plans to continue his listening tours in september and october and plans to talk to staff, the community and students. he wants to gather their input on the school system.

prevent obesity. a quarter of teenagers who played only two sports were less likely to be overweight. a person's walk can be an early sign of alzheimer's. four studies have linked walking speed to alzheimer's. researchers looked at how a person walked in their home and slower walking speeds were associated with a smaller brain size. walking changes because the disease interferes with parts of the tblain cell movement. the disease impacts over 5 million americans currently, and that number is expected to climb to 16 million as baby boomers continue to age. a study on weight loss finds there are three key tricks for successfully dropping pounds. doctors say the most important is to keep a food journal. women in the study who wrote down everything they ate or drank lost more weight.
