security. how safe from sabotage is the food on commercial airlines? it was definitely not on the menu. a half dozen sewing needles found in sandwiches on four separate delta flights this past sunday. at least one person injured after biting in. >> there was the second bite, i bit down, that's when i felt the poke on the top of my mouth. when i pull it out of my mouth, i cleaned the food off, it was about a one-inch needle. >> reporter: passenger james was seated in row "h." >> right now, i'm okay. they said if i start developing symptoms, nausea, headaches, i have to go to the emergency room right away. it's kind of a wait and see right now. >> reporter: federal authorities, including the fbi tonight are investigating who had access to the flights originating out of amsterdam found for the u.s. delta air lines released a statement saying it has taken

immediate action with our in-flight caterer at amsterdam to ensure the safety and quality of the food we provided on board our air cast. sandwiches were prepared at thegate catering company in los angeles. gate gourmet is huge, operating in 28 countries. it searches an average of 9,700 flights every day a year. over 300 passengers annually. >> the biggest problem, obviously is, you can't check every sandwich aboard a plane. and i think, unfortunately, this demonstrates to people who want to do bad things that this is a gaping hole. >> reporter: in a statement,gate gourmet said "we take this matter very seriously." gate gourmet immediately launched a full investigation to determine the root cause of his disturbing incidents and we are treating this as a criminal act." sunday's incident comes at a time when the airline industry is already at high alert.

authorities worry with the olympic game looming that it will provide a target for terrorists. we saw how jittery they were just last week when a delta plane was diverted after pieces of mysterious wire were discovered. >> we have an emergency. >> reporter: now one more thing for security-weary passengers to worry about. not shoe bombs or underwear bombs, but the food. was this a freak thing or a prank, bill, we don't have the answers. >> in searching for that, pierre, it's interesting that two of the people who have claimed to have bitten into needles were related but different flights, tell us. >> the father and son were two of the victims. authorities don't know what to make of this, but they're definitely investigating, bill. >> it would be a heck a coincidence. what is the fbi planning on doing now? >> agents will be heading too
