good morning. i'm sunny hostin, in for paula faris. >> and i'm rob nelson. good morning, everybody. the fbi has launched a criminal investigation after needles were found in six sandwiches on delta flights. >> two passengers who got the tainted sandwiches, were a father and son, flying on different flights to the u.s. with more, here's abc's tahman bradley. >> reporter: it's not what you expect served in flight. a half-dozen sewing needles found in sandwiches on four, separate delta flights this sunday. a stunning discovery, raising questions about security aboard commercial planes. a doctor and a son, traveling on separate flights. >> had i taken a swallow, i'd have a needle inside. that would be very concerning to me. >> james tunges also says he ate one of the sandwiches.

>> i felt the poke on the top of my mouth. it was very clear. it was about a one-inch-long straight needle. >> reporter: the u.s.-bound flights originated in amsterdam. federal authorities including the fbi are investigating. trying to find out who had access to the food before the plane. the catering company have been removed from flights. and a statement, gate gourmet said, we take this matter very seriously. gate formay immediately launched a full investigation, to determine the root cause of this disturbing incident. and we are treating this as a criminal act. delta airlines says it has taken immediate action to ensure the safety and quality of its food. but the scare exposes a vulnerable area of airline security. >> you can't check every sandwich that goes aboard a plane. and i think unfortunately, this demonstrates to people who want to do bad things this this is a gaping hole.

>> reporter: the airline industry is on high alert, coinciding with the olympic games. now, passengers have to worry about terror threats and their food. tahman bradley, abc news, washington. >> thank you. another alarming mid flight moment. federal agents are investigating a laser-pointing incident that injured a jetblue pilot that was flying here to new york city. the airline says a green laser light went through the windshield of a flight from syracuse to jfk airport sunday night, causing an eye injury to the pilot, who managed to land that plane safely ten minutes later. pointing a laser at a plane became a federal claim last year. and 1,500 incidents have been reported. new details are coming in about a mass shooting in toronto, with police calling it the most serious crime of its kind that city has ever seen. 21 people, including children, were shot at a big outdoor party. at least two people have died. and one of the injured is an

infant. police say a fight broke out and bullet started flying from a number of weapons. they have one person in custody. another developing story, one of the busiest bridges between the u.s. and canada reopened overnight after being shut down for four hours because of a bomb threat. the ambassador bridge linking detroit and windsor, ontario, was closed after authorities on the u.s. side got a call warning of a bomb. no explosives were found. last week, a bomb scare closed the tunnel between the two cities. legitimate questions this morning about whether britain is actually ready for the upcoming olympics. after arriving at heathrow airport yesterday, a group of u.s. athletes suffered through a four-hour odyssey. their bus driver, believe it or not, got lost on the way to the olympic village. a security guard has been seen sleeping on the job inside olympic park. and the security duty is having

trouble with its staff. 56 guards were supposed to secure a venue just yesterday. but actually 17 showed up. ten days and counting inle the opening ceremony. the pentagon will reportedly announce its biggest ever mine-sweeping exercise in the persian gulf. all this comes a day after an american ship in that region found itself under threat. and then opened fire with deadly effect. abc's jon karl reports. >> reporter: in this instant, an unidentified motor boat sped towards the u.s. navy ship. and u.s. sailors aboard did not know who was coming towards them. u.s. military officials say the incident happened at 2:50 in the afternoon. ten miles off the coast of the united arab emirates. the navy ship first attempted to make radio contact with the boat, warning it to back off. but the boat kept coming at a high rate of speed. the ship issued warnings over loud speaker.

the boat did not slow down. they fired in the water, using a .50 caliber machine gun, similar to this one. when that didn't work, sailors samed the ship's weapons straight at the oncoming boat and fired, killing one person onboard and wounding at least three others. the boat was not iranian at all. all the victims were from india. two others aboard but unhurt, from the uae. what was the unidentified boat? they describe it as a pleasure craft. there's no indication this was an attempted act of terrorism. but at the very least, it was a massive communications breakdown in one of the most dangerous places in the world. jonathan karl, abc news, washington. the most traumatic moment of the republican presidential campaign so far could play out in the next few days. a spokesman says mitt romney may announce his vice presidential pick by week's end.
