some of these storms are severe west of garrett county, northwest of hagerstown, perhaps they will hold together and bring some more valuable rain in here tonight. we hope so. 97 frederick. 92 downtown. it's hot and sticky and will to be the rest of the evening with more showers and storms in the offing. we have much more on the weekend, the changes, coming up. all new at 6:00 -- historic annapolis with its cobblestone streets, buildings and sailboats .ing the chesapeake, has a drug problem. as jeff hager tells us a major bust has happened. >> reporter: to the naked eye you can mia's take it for a half cup of brown sugar but this 140 grams of heroin has a street value of $30,000. police found it during raids on two homes in the clay street community of annapolis. >> information was based on

community sources, the police department pursues those vigorously. the drug department got it just as fast. two hand guns recovered as well. >> reporter: the guns were reported stolen and the investigation is far from over. >> we ask where these drugs come from. we dig into it and sometimes we find baltimore connections and sometimes prince george's county and sometimes the district of columbia. >> reporter: while members of the drug enforcement unit and s.w.a.t. team made a pair of arrests investigators say more suspects and more busts will come out of this. overall crime may be down at maryland's capital city but the war on drugs is far from over. >> we are seeing there is an upswing in some areas, indicating to show there's drug use out there. we're not naive enough to think we can solve all the problems

with one good case like this. it's a continued course of action we have to go through and help with the community and people here we're getting it done. >> reporter: in annapolis, jeff hager, abc2 news. police arrested 19-year-old cortez marshall on various drug charges and he's already free on $40,000 bond. 44-year-old robert carrier faces similar charges, he's behind bars tonight. heroin stories don't always end up in arrests and drug seizures. it's not uncommon for them to end in overdoses, it's a problem that affects all races, all neighborhoods. kelly swoope is here with more on heroin's rise in popularity in the suburbs. >> reporter: more and more health officials say heroin is makes its way from the city streets to suburbs. the latest from the centers for disease control shows heroin deaths are more than a decade ago and most are under 30.

it's becoming cheaper than buying oxycontin pills. 21-year-old and a 19-year-old are in rehab now for their heroin addiction. both say they grew up in good communities with loving families. got hooked on painkillers first, then turned to heroin because it was cheaper. >> it was really good. that's why - >> it's everywhere. a lot of parents think not my child. all our parents thought that. >> it is not the first time in rehab for connor and mary bette. they say they hope it will be their last. it's important to know that drug addiction doesn't discriminate. the food and drug administration says close to 10% teen heroin addicts are white. created an interactsive resource guide to help you with the warning signs that someone you love could be using heroin. there's also treatment approaches and how to intervene if you think there's a problem.

go to abc2news.com slash heroin. our city has almost 600 of them but soon the city police may have countless more camera angles to solve crime. thanks to a donation from the abell foundation, new on-line software will allow businesses to plug into the crime watch camera grid. it's optional but would give police more access to help investigations after a crime goes down. and the police departments say the program will be an invaluable tool. >> this is a great tool. now when we get the call, before even going out and wondering and questioning as to whether or not, man, i hope they have a camera. now we know. that's just, again, it's jut one step closer to solving cases. >> the funding for this program was just approved this week, it could take a while to go on-line. the first businesses that sign up are hospitals followed by

hotels. he's already got two years in prison to handle, now can add 30 more days to tommy clacks's sentence. exposed for running a scam pled guilty in queen anne's court today and got a month added to his time. yesterday he was sentenced no anne arundel county for acting as a contractor without a license. prosecutors say he overcharged customers by thousands for paving jobs he was not even allowed to do. it disappears in the dark of night with some calling it a huge hazard but what will it take to get lights at the jetty? the investigation at kent narrows. it's the spot where a man was killed in a boating accident memorial day weekend. it's not the first crash. and family wants lights on the wall to make sure it's the last. >> there's been three accidents, a fatality. one death, what do you have to have? three deaths to meet a mark to where you have to put lights on

mount airy and summit ridge. a bunch of clouds just rolled by here, then the storm comes through, a little bit of rain in mount airy today. and wyett will be back with the detailed forecast on what to expect later on tonight into tomorrow. now to the health alert. a lot of hope put on the future of stem cell research. doctors have now found a way to harvest a new stem cell to prevent amputation. linda so has details on this breakthrough. >> reporter: chuck thought this may be the last time he could go fishing with his grandson. chuck has a condition called peripheral arterial disease or p.a.d. in 25 years he's gone at least 25 bypass surgeries just to

keep the blood flowing to his lower leg. >> i'm at the point right now i cannot have any more bypasses. it's been so many bypasses done and they can't do anymore. >> reporter: like thousands of others chuck was running out of options and quickly coming to terms with the terrifying reality. >> 150,000 a year in the united states have to undergo amputation because of the condition. it's a result of blocked blood flow, blocked arteries feeding to the leg. >> reporter: dr. michael goe and team of researchers at ohio state university medical center are trying a new approach. a therapy that could have huge impact on chuck's life and to see if it works doctors keep a close eye on the small sore on his foot. >> a new idea is that we are investigating the use of a patient's own stem cells to stimulate the growth of the new healthy blood vessels we harvest stem cells from the patient's bone marrow. we isolate and purify them. then we inject them into the affected limb. >> reporter: if the treatment

the city says they can better use resources and in the long run save money. >> we know the condition of that pipeline. we know that other section with the two-block location, they are vulnerable pipes as well.

line, northwest of hagerstown. perhaps holding together and arriving overnight, will mean -- or later this evening, could lose strengths but keep the rain. could be a -- could be much- needed rain soaking in the ground overnight. we were able to capture some of this active weather this afternoon on our hd cameras. huge downpour here, massive storm over the beach, you don't want to be in this. wet weather in ocean city and the eastern shore is one of the driest parts of the state of maryland now. in harford county we could use the rain and we're getting it. downtown, bel air, wet roads, be careful driving on them but overall it's welcome rain. live shot of baltimore now, no rain here but cloudy skies, 90 degrees. and winds are southeast at 6 miles per hour. rain just north of downtown now. in the towson area. numbers cooled off a bit but we're still talking 90s out there. the numbers cool down a lot actually from yesterday. we were 104 for a high.

today much cooler than that. but not exactly cool because the humidity came up. so the heat index value, the real feel temperature when you go heat plus humidity, still feeling like about 100 all over central maryland. the diewrpt numbers are above 70. that is oppressive humidity but it's also helping to fuel some much-needed rain. really this time of year it's going to be thundershower activity that brings us the rain we need other than potentially a tropical system coming in off the atlantic ocean. we see no sign of any tropical activity any time soon. so thunderstorms are kind of going to be where it's at. we just don't want the severe weather. could there be severe storms tomorrow? yes. tonight though i think will be just garden variety, hit and miss thundershowers, could see thunder overnight as we see more hit and miss storms in the overnight hours. i think the chance for severe weather will hold off until tomorrow afternoon and evening. the brief window for that will subside overnight. we could still see overnight rain, thundershowers into saturday morning. that will be welcome rain and looks like we begin to see

clearing saturday afternoon and sunday. by the way, the most intense heat still out there. it's in the country's mid-section now, not heat index values but actual air temperatures of 105 toward the center of the united states, unbelievable drought. overnight 74. tomorrow 2-degree guarantee is 85. that will be a cooldown, right? enjoyable. 70 tomorrow night though, staying muggy. the outlook, a couple of days in the 80s, that's going to be outstanding, really, compared to the 100 plus degree weather we've had so many days this summer really. and right now the outlook, more seasonable. you have to remember, this is unbelievable but on average we're 87, 88 degrees now. it's been hot. >> thank you. what do you think about a new walmart on plum tree road? at 924 in bel air? you have a chance to tell walmart how you feel, in about nine minutes at paterson middle and high school. the store wants to develop on
