student named james holmes. local and federal authorities are still working to get in to the young man's apartment. that is a process that could take a while. you can see this is video from today. the movie theater outside denver, colorado. chaotic, intense scene today following that shooting. it happened at the midnight screening of the latest batman movie there. they have been investigating. police had a press conference today briefing the media. james holmes father arrived. we will get the latest on where this stands now. we want to go live in colorado with the latest details on the investigation. give us the latest update at this point on james holmes. now the victims families and the police want to know why.

the screens and terror inside the midnight premier of the latest batman film warrant the reaction to the reaction happening on scale, the hail of bullets fired by the rampaging gunman. >> gunman. >> reporter: he tossed a smoke grenade and started firing at the crowd. >> all i could think is if i stand up he is going to shoot. that's what he was doing. i was trying to think how i was going to get my kids out of there. >> reporter: movie goers were confused and thought the fire was coming to the action packed movie. >> i see a guy next, a gentlemen sitting next to me getting shot. i realize this is not like part of the movie. there is a gunman, he is shooting everyone. >> reporter: he was wearing a gas mask and bullet proof vest. >> the casings were on my forehead and burning. >> reporter: the suspect, james

holmes, 24, was arrested as he left the theater. >> he was apprehendd with three weapons in the car. >> reporter: according to a police officials, holmes said he was the joker, a super villain character in the batman movies. >> he looks like a deranged individual. he had his hair painted red. >> reporter: he said his apartment was booby trapped. s.w.a.t. teams found flammable materials and evacuated the surrounding buildings. we are also now learning more about the gunman, holmes has a degree in neuro science. he did buy several guns recently and did it legally. reporting live in aurora, colorado, back to you. this tragedy happened more than 2000 miles away. you will see changes because of it here in the baltimore area.

amc movie theaters, security square, white marsh, owings mills and columbia will not allow customers to wear masks or carry fake weapons, police departments are shifting efforts tonight. brian kuebler is live in hamdon to explain the changes. >> reporter: this is a very big night for a very big movie. it's a point not lost on local law enforcement. baltimore county police say while it won't staff officers at all theaters, they will patrol. it's an attempt to calm fears the movie going public may have. baltimore city place will staff police officers at all city movie theaters whether showing the dark night rises or not, this is not to alarm anyone or a response to any kind of real >> i think an attack at a movie theater hits home for individuals, i know other

families and loved ones of the victims at this tragic time. president obama talked about the shooting t at a campaign event in fort meyers florida, he scraped the speech and spoke about his reaction to the deadly rampage. >> my daughters go to the movies. what if malia and sasha had been at the theater as so many of our kids do everyday. michelle and i will be fortunate enough to hug our girl as little tighter tonight, i'm sure you will do the same with your children. for those parents who may not be so lucky, we have to embrace them and let them know we will be there for them as a nation. >> the president canceled a second event in florida and decided to return to dc. republican presidential candidate mitt romney told supporters in new hampshire justice will come for the person responsible for the shooting he called for americans to focus on loving

walked in to the midnight showing of the batman movie ready to live out what sounds like a super villain family according to police. the suspect was dressed in black. he was wearing a ballistic helmet, a tactical ballistic vest. his hair was dyed orange or red and said i'm the jocker, a reference to batman's arch enemy when he started shooting at people who purchased tickets to one of the summer's most anticipated films. >> reporter: among the 71 people shot the youngest receiving medical treatment was a 3-month-old baby. among the 12 people killed, the youngest was 12 years old. one of the dead was jessica, an aspiring sports caster who unbelievably survived another shooting last month at a mall in toronto. she wrote in her blog, evsecond of everyday is a gift. in san diego, where holmes grew
