obama is in colorado to meet people in aurora. after that deadly rampage that killed 12 people. tonight there's going to be a vigil for the victims. abc 2 news is there tonight live from the buckley air force space in aurora. the president landed about an hour ago. what's the atmosphere like in aurora? >> reporter: it is very somber here in aurora. in fact, buckley air force is only a mile away. today police chief dan oats and the mayor of aurora was on hand. they were here today to greet the president. they went with him as they were meeting with family member. the mayor of aurora said it certainly means a lot that the president cares. the president's stay here in colorado is a short one.

2.5 hours. does not appear he will make any public appearances to address what happened. we can tell you that the president is wanting to meet with them very privately. he does not want any media there. maybe the white house press photographer there. that's it. the president really wants to meet with the families. he said he did not want to stay here for the vigil. he wanted the community to heal. >> i was going to ask you, what do you know about the vigil? how many folks will be there? >> reporter: the city of aurora actually put this vigil together. it was a way for them to get the entire community to come out to talk about what they're feeling to grieve for the loss of those 12 families. the 59 people that are shot that are still recovering. it's a way for this community to say we're here and stick together. we're not going to let this one incident bring us down. >> all right live from colorado, thank you very much

for that report. as each hour that passes brings new images and know details about the man police say opened fire. abc 2 news has uncovered exclusive video that james holmes gave to a group of students. >> reporter: stunning new images of suspect james holmes an exclusive video and photos obtained by abc 2 news. this is video of holmes talking to students at a science camp in san diego. discussing what he calls illusions. >> the then 18-year-old holmes appears slightly nervous. >> the study of subjective experience which is what's placed inside the minded as a opposed to the external world.

>> reporter: as new details emerge about holmes residents of aurora are still trying to draw up what happened. president obama heads to console a grieving community. >> it's like whoever thought this would immediately affect my family. when they see other shootings. they think, oh my gosh, i can't imagine what those families are going through. >> reporter: the suspect, james holmes was on a path on destruction. not only killing and injuring dozens in a colorado movie theater but in his apartment was a mind field of explosive booby-traps. designed to kill anyone who entered. a authorities spent saturday detonating the traps. >> make no mistake okay, this apartment was designed, i say, based on everything i've seen, to kill whoever entered it. >> reporter: investigators continue to examine items

you can see the sun gave beach goers a great day by the water. see how that will fair around here. meteorologist mike join us now with the latest. >> beautiful here. we're dealing with clouds and that catches blow average today which is certainly a different thing we haven't seen in a while. taking a look at the shots. look at the actual high today dwi, 81 degrees. we have a little bit of cooler degrees. that temperatures down into the 70s. notice the clouds starts to dissipate. we call it partly cloudy skies. back into evening forecast, will reflect 70s. clouds recovering muggy. there's the cloud on top of us. you go towards north and west, showers breaking in.

doesn't look much now, that could bring in some storms for tomorrow. the weather may have played a factor in a crash that killed an ellicott city man. howard county police say that 87-year-old harold harold mazmanian when his truck skidded on a eastbound lane and slammed into a tree. we're told the slick. it appears the speed may have a factor. a man who was shot several times early yesterday morning remains in critical condition tonight. the shooting happened in the 3500 block of west belvedere avenue. police say they found a 21-year- old man who has been shot several times. authorities are not saying yet about a motive or possible suspect. anyone with information is asked to call baltimore police. the latest tonight from penn state.

workers have removed the iconic statue of joe paterno. news report say paterno concealed sex abuse allegations against jerry sandusky. tomorrow morning the ncaa will announce the measures it will take against the school and they're expecting to significant and far freedom of speeching. however, we're told the organization will not give the quote death penalty blow to the university. sandusky is awaiting sentencing on sex abuse convictions. this has been a hot topic. one controversial decision. we want to know what you think about it. leave your thoughts on this hot topic on our facebook page at abc2news.com/facebook. coming up a little bit later in the shore, we're going to go back to colorado where we're hearing more stories of heroism and love in midst of all of that chaos. one man jumps to action to save

will go further towards the south and allow for more sunshine. it got hung up. now we turn our attention out towards the west. this is another slow moving front. notice the showers and storms developed over northeastern michigan all the way up toward wisconsin. this system drops down over the ohio valley by tomorrow afternoon. so temperatures into the 80s, tomorrow's forecast is now situated over a dayton and southern indiana. you know heat down to the south. look at this heat, 101, 100 degrees plus. that's going to stay out towards south and west. we'll get a piece of that during this week. high pressure that keeps us high and dry for tomorrow. then we'll start see the clouds approaching from the western horizon and then showers and storms will start to fire. this one doesn't move through tomorrow afternoon. it waits until tuesday. we will kind of string this out with the humidity both tomorrow

he's shooting at people, stay down. >> reporter: the second for josh nolan was to protect his friend. the 31-year-old navy veteran deployed to iraq twice threw himself on top of friends. dozens of bullets flew through the air. one went through his calf and lodged into his arm. >> they pulled he arm. >> reporter: nolan said he flattened himself on the theater floor with his friends beneath him. >> if that gun had not jammed, he wouldn't be here. >> i know i wouldn't be here. if that gun did not jam, i probably would not be here. it's scary.

live. they just got married. >> so no longer a friendship. it's not even a family. it's like something deeper. >> this is something that we'll never leave. >> reporter: his friends won't leave his side now helping nolan through a second surgery and physical therapy. as soon as he can, nolan has only one thing he says he must do for his emotional recovery. >> i want to go back to that theater. i want to go back into that auditorium and look down in that same street and say i beat you. you did not take this life. >> reporter: cnn, aurora, colorado. >> that's a hero. much more from aurora coming up tonight on abc 2 news at 11:00.
