estimates from point to point, how much time 10- 15 minutes. so far, so good on the roads. talking about the traffic in a little bit coming up. new information about your safety on the roads, a new traffic report says fatalities are on the increase. this morning, sherrie johnson is here to break this down and what does this mean? we have new laws in place. we are live in rogers forge, right here, setting the scene, traffic isn't all that bad behind me, off of york road. it's calm. lit pick up during rush hour. this report says for the first three months of 2012, there has been a significant increase in traffic deaths. this is compared to statistics from last year. over 7000 people died in car crashes for the first quarter of this year. that's a 13.5% increase compared to the same period in

2011 when there were over 6000 fatalities. authorities say it's too soon to speculate on what the problem is, or the potential implications. transportation safety officials point out the crash fatality rate for the first first is lower than rates for the other three quarters because of winter weather. the winter of 2012 was unseasonably warm and people the end to drive more when the weather is better. the increase in fatalities follows a downward trend for the past several years. a clee's call for more than a dozen moms and babies in an alice. they had to be -- annapolis. they had to be evacuated. the fire started in the utility closet on the third floor, that is the floor dedicated to women recovering from childbirth. 60 firefighters responded to the fie.

the car which was driven by an 88-year-old man was traveling the wrong way on a portland interstate. the trooper tried to flag him down but the driver kept on going. the trooper made a split second decision. >> i saw him still going and decided this was the time i got to punch it, beat him to the crossover. no up with was hurt. trooper crawford says he was doing his job. an american pioneer, sally ride , the fist american woman to fly in space is dead after a result of pancreatic cancer. 61 years old, sally ride was an advocate for science and math and education and the author of a number of childrens books.

birth defect she never knew was there saved her life. the bullet went in to her skull, a defect caused it to misvital areas of the brain. before heading to the university of maryland anderson attended the university of the pa pacific in stockton, california. >> campus community knew he well, she was a scholarship recipient and we are truly saddened by what happened to he. >> a website is raising money, both for anderson and her mother who has been battling cancer. the site raised over 70,000 dls. >> with so much happening with the young lady, she was going to come to the university of maryland. >> with all of her medical issues, it's unclear at this point if she will be able to attend the university of maryland in the fall. she plans to take it one day at a time. >> thank you so much. some of you need a job, others need the money.

they haven't been doing anything about it. now it is time that something is done. they don't want to have to deal with the problem ever again. >> i don't get why they don't do something about it. they know it's a threat to us. >> reporter: officials tell abc 2 they sent an inspector to check out the area. some trees will be coming down in next few weeks. >> reporter: linda so, abc2 news. we had our share of power outages and people living in howard want to do something about it. they petitioned the commission to investigate bge's response to the power loss following irene last year. learn about the investigation at a public hearing scheduled for tonight. it's happening at the george howard building in ellicott city and begins at 7:00.
