the lead on this. a man abducted vi ripken early one morning and returned her the next. it was in the back of her aberdeen home that vi ripken came face to face with a masked gunman. >> help wanted her money and car. blindfolded her, tied her up. first put this mask on her and drove off. >> reporter: missing without a trace for 13 hours, police in baltimore county got the first indication ripken had been abducted when the woman was spotted bound in her car and confronted the suspect before dialing 911. >> there were comments made to the effect there was a family member suffering from dementia. that's why she may have been bound with her hands in the front and the citizens notified

the police department. >> reporter: police converged on ripken's neighborhood back in aberdeen searching for the suspect's car. the victim would describe how her captor drove her around during the night. >> they did stop to get gas, got food and other things and he lit cigarettes for her and stuff like that in the car, i guess. she didn't have either one of her cell phones with her or her purse so they couldn't track her. they couldn't get a ping on where she was. >> reporter: police discovered her still bound and blindfolded, just a block from her home where the suspect had gotten out of the car and disappeared. they don't know if the man knew she was the matriarch of the

most famous family. >> any team you're a celebrity -- thank god she's safe. >> reporter: police are looking for a tall thin white male in his late 30s to early 40s last seen wearing a light colored shirt, camouflaged pants and eyeglasses. if you have information you're asked to call the aberdeen police. reporting live from aberdeen, jeff hager. >> earlier today the ripken family released a statement about vi's abduction. it reads as you now know our mother was abducted from dunn point. this has been a very tryingfor our family, but we are time grateful and relieved that mom is back with us, safe and healthy. we want to thank everyone for their tremendous support, especially all of the law

low 50s. that basically means the moisture in the atmosphere is very low, very few clouds, comfortable stuff. annapolis, cambridge, not bad. tomorrow we'll see temperatures begin to climb backs into the upper 80s. in fact, this is not even updated. we're talking about temperatures pushing into the upper 90s. we'll have much more coming up. >> let's go live to east monument street. this is a picture of a 10-foot wide sinkhole. it's in the 2300 block of monument. we're couple blocks away from johns hopkins hospital. it was not caused by the water main break and that the hole is dry. we're told there is a strong odor of natural gas and bge is there. they're evaluating the scene. stores on both sides of the block have been closed and people have been evacuated.

this is on east monument street. you know the last time we checked, pasadena was quietly still sitting in the southeast corner of anne arundel, not arizona. well try to explain this. how does a coyote end up face to face with a woman who ends up talking with our don harrison. >> reporter: he is is talking about her confrontation with two wild coyotes. she saw them maul her cat. >> when i yelled, one ran toward the water. the other ran toward the road. >> reporter: this isn't the first time something like this happened. lori had four chickens she got as a birthday present and something killed them. >> it's a beautiful place to live. now you cannot have a pet that

goes outside because of the coyote problem we're having. >> reporter: the daughters are upset about the coyote attack. >> i don't come outside anymore at night, only in the daytime. >> no, i'm not going out there. it freaks me out that they were steps away from the door. >> generally, they're active at night. >> reporter: peter jane is with the department of natural resources. >> they do tend to attack house cats and eat them. they appear to be a favorite foot of coyotes. >> reporter: he said attacks to humans is'scally unheard of -- is basically unhard of. >> there are millions of people living with millions of coyotes and problems are extrily rare.

>> reporter: lori may have to get used to living with coyotes. they are in every county of this state. >> department of natural resources said if think you see coyotes around, keep your trash closed up. police are trying to determine how a skull ended up in an area where someone was hiking. it has been taken to the medical examiner's office. >> you note sun can fade your shutters and brown occupant your grass but strong enough to melt your siding. homeowners in eight states, including ours say it's happening to ours. why it's not a direct hit from the summer sun that's the blame. and it could and up heating up things between upand your neighbor. >> anybody in the neighborhood

could be up to the same problem. >> how this phenomenon is happening and what you have to do if you notice your siding is starting to ripple. >> anne arundel police are looking for the people responsible for stealing thousands of copper wiring from five schools. it was stolen since the 7th. the most recent time was on monday. the wiring was taken from old mills high school, north county, broad neck, shipleys trace elementary and high point elementary. >> she is back home with her family tonight but police are trying to find the person responsible for kidnapping cal ripken's mom. >> this summer is real different in westminster. how the departure of the ravens is affecting the town. >> 7 at bwi -- 87 at bwi.

ripken is back. she was abducted from her home. the police slay it happened around 7:00 in the morning when aman approached her and forced her into a car at gun point. just after 6:00 this morning police say she was found in her car close to her home unharmed. police are looking for a white plan in his late 30s, early 40s, last seen wearing a white shirt, cam mow pants. police are working together on this evaluation. if you know anything about this abduction of vi ripken, call the ab berolice department -- aberdeen police department. >> east baltimore on monument street. we have a huge sinkhole. it just opened up. it's right underneath two lanes of traffic in the 2300 block of

monument in east baltimore. fire department officials say it was not caused by water main break. the hole is dry. we're told there is a strong odor of natural gas. bge is evaluating. there has been an evacuation. we'll have the latest on the sinkhole situation tonight at 11 and online at abc2news.com. officials with the department of public works are out there warning people not to be scared by green liquid flowing into the inner harbor. the department is conducting a large dye test as part of their effort and the test die was put in. it's not toxic though officials say it poses no danger to people or marine life. all right. beautiful blue skies. no question about that.

again, a pleasant evening now with the humidity around 30% to 40%. dry air has come in big time and coming in on a welcome note. that high humidity that soupy air, it's south and west of us and will move in big time. mid-morning at the latest. the pattern is quiet for the evening, dry, pleasant and that humidity is extreme to our south and west. this is what will make the difference. i know i will get laughs from the studio. in meteorology 101, when you get this big narrow surge, that's a moist tongue coming up through the nation's mid-section. it's not going to feel funny. look at the heat index values from the west, feeling like 109
