ripken abduction. abc2 news jeff hager joins us with the latest. >> reporter: the suspect drove vi ripken around for almost 24 hours but he also appeared on video in anne arundel county. police will only say it's from a retail business and describe has white male with a baseball cap and a light shirt wearing eyeglasses. and images generated 50 calls to a specially established tips line since its release last week. now investigators are looking for more leads. >> trying to get this to anne arundel county, pushed down further. so, yes, it's taken some time.

>> reporter: today police also released this composite sketch of the man based on eye witness accounts. if you think you recognize the man you're asked to call the hotline. you can romaine anonymous. information leading to a conviction will earn you a reward of $2,000. today was the last day on the job for police commissioner fred bealefeld, but he didn't leave his office without sitting down with brian kuebler for an exclusive interview. >> reporter: fred bealefeld turns 50 next month, the best mile marker, he said. in just hours commissioner fred bealefeld will be retired.

in 2011, bealefeld's last year we had a little more than 9,000 report violent crimes, a 16% drop. last year's murder rated, the lowest on record since 1977. overall, crime did rise in 2011. most of that is connected to the increase in home and car burglaries. >> while the city works on a replacement, the deputy commissioner is now the acting police commissioner. he is card candidate for the full-time job. the mayor has selected a panel to pick the next chief. ken thompson was on the mayor's transition hall team. on the panel you'll find educators from johns hopkins, ron followed daniels, business leaders and president and investment of an investment firm and folks who work for city hall. bealefeld is the fifth commissioner since 2000.

it was headed up by ronald daniel. norris was in the position a bit longer. after norris came kevin clark who held it from 2003 to 2004. then leonard hamm from 2004 to 2007 and that's when commissioner bealefeld took over. a couple severe thunderstorms to tell you about howard county west into frederick county and into montgomery county. you see the storm right here, zoomed in view moving just west of laurel into the center of howard county toward the columbia area, eventually may move up into ellicott city and moving toward the damascus area. maybe some damaging winds and isolated spots. these are marginal but any thunderstorm with that dangerous lightning as well. to the west we have much more in the way of active weather.

for the rest of the evening we expect 80s, warm humid conditions but scattered storms in spots. much more on the outlook last we go into wednesday and your weekend. it's coming up. >> thanks a lot. taking a look at 695 now at 83, traffic seems to be moving smoothly after -- at the rush hour a different story mon the capital beltway where several lanes of the inner loop were blocked for hours after a tractor-trailer overturned it. started what he car hit a tree trimming truck trying to change lanes. the truck lost chrome and ended up crashing into the tractor-trailer, running it off the road and into the jersey wall. eventually it came to rest ons it side, stretched nearly the entire width of the highway. the inner loop was back open a little after noon. the truck's driver, three:and the man driving the car that set off the chain reaction crash

were all hurt. howard county police say that 42-year-old michelle lower rennes was killed when her truck hit a tree in columbia. it happened last night in the 5600 block of high tore hill. she was driving her dodge dakota south on tore when the truck left the road and actually hit a tree. she was pronounced dead at the scene. police say speed was a factor in the crash and lower rennes was not wear hack seat belt. a state panel approve has license for a proposed casino in baltimore. it's for a casino with more than 3700 slot machines. meanwhile, the proposed casino in western maryland is being scaled back due to trouble finding financing. the original plan included about 850 slot machines but now that has been reduced to 500. last week governor martin o'malley called for a special session to consider expanding

83rd street. taking a look at some of the top stories from around the nation. former police sergeant dnr -- drew peterson first got attention when his wife stays sip went -- stays sip went missing. police took a second look at peterson's third wife. today that trial got underway. drew peterson's murder trial is already off to a dramatic start. the former suburban chicago police officer is charged with killing his third wife, kathleen savio, who was found dead in a bathtub eight years ago. >> we're trying to stop them from framing drew. >> reporter: the jury had to be removed from the courtroom twice and the defense asked for a mistrial which was defense.

the defense said kathy slipped and fell, hitting her head on the bathtub, case closed. it was originally ruled an accidental drowning but when his fourth wife disappeared, kathleen savio's body was exhumed. throughout this case peterson has displayed confidence in jail. ,ed in the courtroom, joking with his attorneys. >> this is going to be a spectacle. this is going to be all about drew peterson. this is the drew peterson show. >> reporter: among the first witnesses, prosecutors are calling savio's neighbor and a locksmith. but it's all circumstantial witness. >> the fact there's no eyewitness, no smoking gun, no dna.

>> reporter: attorneys estimate the trial could last up to four weeks, reporting from los angeles. in another high profile case, shelly zimmerman has plead not guilty to a perjury trial. she is the wife of 28-year-old george zimmerman. shelly is accused of lying about the family's financing. the judge revoked her husband's bond and sent him back to jail. the judge said the zimmerman's misrepresented how much they had when the initial bond was set. george zimmerman pleaded not guilty saying he is shot the teenager -- he shot the teenager in self-defense. >> many came out to support the penn state team following the ncaa crackdown on the school due to the alleged coverup of the sex scandal.

winds. that's why we have marginal ones on the storm cells. you can see in laurel the skies getting a little more overcast, stormier conditions developing. over the chesapeake, what an interesting sky. sunshine back to developing cumulus clouds and the clouds becoming vertically stacked. that's where you see a thunder head with the increasing vertical development with height, cumulus clouds becoming nimbus. winds are southeast at nine and a scattering of storms on the radar, the most significant south and north of baltimore and on the i-270 core dpoamplet -- corridor. mid-80s, rain in the mountains. winds are from the east, a southeasterly wind. that is a hiewmed breeze -- humid breeze.

helping to fuel those storms, helping to fuel, really, unsettled conditions, and the heat indexes feeling like low 90s except for mid-80s on the delmarva peninsula. rain cooling in the mountains. storms where it's hotter ahead of that line. we got basically that southeasterly flow, humidity coming in. a weak frontal boundary to the west a coastal system to the south. basically it's a messy, active east coast mess. the good news is this. we'll take the rain. showers we can use. we're still in an annual rainfall deficit, not a severe drought. here's one coast aloe moving offshore. secondary one developing over georgia, south carolina, will move offshore over the next two days. a series of fronts trying to push. it won't bring cool air, but it will provide a focusing line or an area where the air mass has changed where storms can develop on that dividing line. so i think it will be unsettled.

most of the coastal weather appears to stay offshore but our next coastal one is developing down here off south carolina. overnight tonight 7 30rbgs staying muggy -- 70, staying muggy with a few thunderstorms. tomorrow night down to 70, still balmy with lingering storms. here's the seven-day forecast. the outlook for the first weekend of august featuring august like heat, no question about that, temperatures low to mid-90s. looks like we won't dry out some. so if you have outdoor plans, it looks better in the week in terms of showers and storms but the heat will be rach cleating -- ratcheting up. >> all right. thanks a lot, wyatt. all right. real important here. if you're waiting to find out the latest olympic results, now is the time to put your tv on
