nasa. the one-ton robotic curiosity kicked off a two-year journey. for those who spent a year working on it, eight months, 352 million miles and a final tense seven minutes as curiosity zipped through at a bliforting 13,000 miles per -- blistering 13,000 miles an hour and then it slowed down. >> that rocked. seriously. >> reporter: flawless, just flawless. nasa released a black and white photo taken from the mars orbit ter as curiosity made a series of complex maneuvers. >> there's the parachute. if we zoom in, there we go. >> reporter: curiosity itself sent back these black and white images from inside the crater. you can see its wheel and shadow from the afternoon sun.

for the next two years, the rover will explowter crater which may have once contained water. it's looking for new clues whether life once existed on mars or still does. >> the reason we're doing this is to try this understand the geological history of mars. >> curiosity will undergo several weeks of health checkups before it takes its first stroll. jamie costello, abc2 news. >> what a great name for it, too. a gas station attend dent had a rough way to start the week. he was outside of his booth about 5:30 this morning in the 2200 block have bay ridge avenue when two men came up, knocked him to the ground and took money from him. one of the men had a gun. >> they simply went after the attendant after he was out of the booth. they knocked him down. he suffered head injuries.

a driver in texas hits six people in a parking lot, killing a 7-year-old girl. the little girl was in the path and there was no time to get away. she was walk next ho to her mom -- next to her mom when she was hit and killed. the driver is an 82-year-old man. his family said a diabetic seizure is the cause, but police

are still investigating. people in northeast tennessee are watching out for more storms after being hit with six inches of rain. flash flooding made rescue necessary. it happened mostly in johnson city. no deaths or injuries have been reported so far. it's that time of the year again. for many in hour community, back-to-school isn't possible. we'll take a look at some of the groups and teachers coming together to help them. usually the mud slinging is reserved for the candidates but some high ranking members of congress are getting in on it. what they're saying and who they're saying it about coming up.

>> reporter: we brought outstory of darlene an drum and her -- landrum and her four children. carmella, like all teachers, wants to make sure that no child is left behind. >> if i find a kid who does not come in with school supplies, often they're embarrassed. >> reporter: the preston mitchham foundation has worked closely with title one students where 06% of the students receive free or reduced lunch, which means many of the families will not have the extra money for school supplies. these teachers have to make sure they can do. >> i have gone to purchase supplies i know kids will need. >> reporter: you see this classroom? 10 students will sit at their desk without the tools to learn. this is one school painting a picture of a growing need.

cam, seeing the flags flapping. 90 degrees. the humidity is high from baltimore south in our state up toward the pennsylvania line. there, you're getting a little break in the humidity. through the day it's stuff top find a lot of sun over the city, mostly cloudy skies. in laurel, hazy conditions rule the day. how about kent island. it was kind of gray, kind of hazy, not as sunny as the weekend. storms have been generally tracking south of us. they will continue to be to the south at least through wednesday. better storms coming wednesday afternoon and as we go into friday. more on that in one sect -- second. most spots running in the upper 80s. that northwest wind trying to edge in some slightly drier air. you see it on our moisture map the dew points below 60 in hagerstown, and now 56 in york. the dew point is up around 70 where we have the stickier

conditions. that makes the heat indices feel hotter. we think this will be the same scenario tomorrow, general rally a rain free tuesday. into wednesday we this this boundary could shift further north. that could bring the storm chances back by wednesday afternoon. for now this frontal boundary is just south of us, not far enough south to really let the dry air get in here but far enough south to push the storms which generally form ahead of the front by 50 to 100 miles. so it's a rainy day in virginia beach and roanoke but not so much here. the high moisture levels are south of us, so we're not seeing the oppressive humidity in maryland for the moment. we'll see moderate to moderately low humidity. as we go into tuesday more storms in the afternoon south of us and into wednesday as that front kind of drifts further back, retreats back north, there

we go a couple of pop-up showers and storms will be possible. if you want to talk about this storm, how about this big storm, ernesto, strengthening over the caribbean sea. it has not been upgraded yet to hurricane strength. we think by this time tomorrow afternoon ernesto will be a hurricane and likely to skirt north of honduras maybe clip belize, coastal mexico and crossing over the bay of campeche into southern central mexico. right now winds at 65. of course, once we get to 74, we'll be dealing with a category one hurricane in the caribbean sea. overnight back here in baltimore, 72. your two-degree guarantee tomorrow 88. sun and clouds and a warm breeze. let's check out the seven-day forecast. temperatures heat up on wednesday with a slight chance

2,989 and the s&p 500 is about there and a quarter at 1394. social security used to be a great deal for retirees when it was first enacted in the 1930s payroll taxes were low. it's a shift which is bad news that will only get worse for all of us, unfortunately. southwest is refunding customers who were accidentally overcharged for a siege flight after some online ticket promotion. the sale was designed to celebrate the airline reaching the 3 million mark in facebook fans. they should have given customers who booked flight as 5% discount. instead a computer glitch caused customers to be charged multiple times.
