guy. that's who jim pierce was. but to another man, he was a random target. brian kuebler tells us this random violence cut down the life of one of our veterans. >> reporter: jim pierce was a welder by trade. before that he served his country in the navy, two tours. he had his hobby and his routines. one of them shopping here at the grocery store in elkton when police said this man, troy kelly of northst approached pierce from behind and started beating him. detectives feel pierce was unconscious by the fifth strike, laying in the middle of aisle eight but court documents show that didn't stop him from striking him another 18 times. >> from what we know they never met each other.

>> that makes this case a little bit more weird. >> yes. it's a shocking case, something you don't see in this community oar which may be while a witness trailed kelly, called elkton police and they were able to locate and arrest him on bridge street. kelly is charged with murder and assault. he was denied mail bail this morning -- denied bail this morning in cec county court. >> that makes no sense. they didn't know each other. there's nothing to say other than it was horrific and we miss him. >> reporter: pierce' family is left struggling with the chaotic randomness of all of this. the acme surveillance camera caught it but they can't explain why a stranger would pass hooters in one iamb only to return to murder him in the next. it leaves elkton police searching for a motive while

pierce's family deals with this seemingly unrealistic reality. >> he loved his family, his friends and would do anything for inbound. >> reporter: an all around sweet guy making this case, this target all the more unbelievable. in elkton, brian kuebler, abc2 news. >> killed at the grocery store. pierce was pronounced dead saturday nit at union memorial hospital. the 42-year-old kelly will face four charges including first and second-degree murder and assault. stealing panera gift cards. police tell us three men from baltimore got $35,000 out of their scam. we'll take you to loganville, papa where a rutters gas station is at the center. the men would fill up with

diesel at nearly $4 a gallon and swipe a difficulty card with the stolen credit card numbers. >> rutters looked no it, looked at the receipts, locked at the footage and sought same vehicles and same men were doing it over and over again. >> 32-year-old rec ky -- ricky he vens of gwynn oaks, glenn keller and kenneth reed were arrested. every day they put on the union form to keep us safe. sadly for a prince george's county officer today was the day. he and another officer were chasing a silver ac a. during the chase the officer lost control of the car crashing into the ditch.

the other officer is expected to be okay. the one who died was thrown from the a trel car. p.d g.d police are -- pg police are looking for the acura. just after 6:00 someone called 911 after finding a body in the basement of a home scarsdale road. officers found him stabbed to death. the crime scene was four blocks long. >> it extends about four blocks. that's because there was some evidence dropped and tracked throughout the neighborhood. >> right now it's not clear if the man knew or was related to anyone inside the home. his identity hasn't been released. in baltimore city where kids head back to school one boy is headed to the recovery room. he was shot on bloom street.

there's no suspect or a motive. >> tracking a line of semi gusty showers. take a look at the last two hours, this animation showing it into westminster, manchester. let's go to street level and show you some of the comients being impacted. this is a good band of showers, even a rumble or two of thunder, small hail over hanover pike. this will make its way to black rock road and eventually moving into falls road. carmel road is seeing an impact. another shower and storm starting to fire outside reisterstown. this will be moving toward the east, southeast. another area that's starting to fire up toward columbia, ellicott city, this will be moving toward 695. here's future scan showing the proimretion of the line.

let me call you back, they will turn the heat up to get you to give that financial information. >> reporter: but the bbb says you need to stay strong and say no thanks if you get one of those poll phone calls. any however that's really free doesn't require money up front. anyone who asks for it is pulling a scam. here's another scam. it involves donating to a canned you support. it's unwise to give to anyone because upcan't be sure who's on the other end of the phone. if you want to give, seek out the candidate on the web and given independently. gusty showers. here's the heaviest of the line situated over mt. carmel road. hempstead you saw gusty winds,

and let's go to the south. this is reisterstown. this will be moving into cockeysville, and columbia starting to see a rumble of thunder around columbia pike and this would be 70 going out toward mt. airy. this line will come through the city limits through the course of the evening. be prepared for a quick 30, 40-mile wind gust lightning tracker picking up on some lightning and eventually moving into towson. 83 from towson on north, be prepared. future scan shows the line progressing from 6:45 to 8:00 and over the eastern shore by 10:00. by 11:00 we'll see clearing skies. outside the harbor shot we're seeing the clouds coming into play. that's an indication the storm

is moving in the next 35, 40 minutes, 62% humidity. take a look at the rain cooled temperatures. we're not low 60s. 77 right now in the city. 77 easton. again, just a little ripple coming through the atmosphere. that's firing off the showers and storm. there's another one back over chicago. that moves through for tomorrow. isolated showers and storms back on the table for tuesday going into wednesday. it's because of this trough that dug. high pressure builds in. that will bring in milder temperatures and a little more in the way of humid conditions. 69 to 70. as we move the time line tomorrow morning starting out in the 60s on its way to the low 80s. it will be a similar scenario with those storms moving through the evening commute tomorrow. dry day for wednesday.
