we start with sad news. deadly coal training derailment in ellicott city. the train derailed around midnight and right now it remains a very active scene. we sent crews out there, linda so and charley crowson, out live on the scene. they have been working the details since midnight last night. what we can tell you is that this train derailed, 23 of the cars went off the tracks. sad news to report. two people died. that's what we are hearing from county officials. we have details right now on one of them. a young woman, entering her junior year at jmu. two reporters are gathering the

details, we have charley crowson on the line. you've been out there since midnight when this happened. can you describe what you are seeing? >> reporter: i think you described it best, wh y said it was an active scene. crews brought in heavy equipment to remove 23 cars that overturned along the historic bridge. main street and maryland avenue in historic downtown ellicott city. back to the two victims you mentioned. we have learned one of them's name is elizabeth nap, she was a jr., entering her junior year. they were on the bridge at the time of the derailment, tweeting photographs up until the time of the accident. for a second victim, don't have information about her right now. that information is forthcoming. linda so is on the scene right

now. i'm two blocks away from where the chaos is going on down with emergency crews. she is gathering new information for us we will have for you at abc2 news and abc2news.com throughout the course of the morning and video from the scene. it's a very chaotic scene, happened around midnight. self-of the bars that were open, preparing to close down, 3 dozen people were in the emporium. crews from howard county, baltimore county, mtsb is on the scene working the investigation to find out what happened. and csx brought in the crews to check the stable of the rail and the bridges and the cars to get the coal off the scene. doesn't appear to be environmental issue yet. daylight could bring a different story. >> let me ask you, we are

looking at pictures you snapped when you got out there, for a while you were the only reporter out there and met with the officials when they were discussing what happened. they didn't have a lot of details at the time. has anybody said whether it's common for people to be on the railroad tracks with bar s so close. >> reporter: that's what we heard. we were talking to the responders this morning, the patrons in the bars, they will foup and go up on -- go up and go up on top of the bridge, pop off a couple of photographs, facebook out to friends, it is a common spot. this has happened before in terms of people being on the bridge. the victims were in the wrong place at the wrong time. >> charley crowson, i know you are going to stay out there life along with abc2 news, linda so, gathering all the information and pictures that you can. thank you for the reports.

afghanistan. 28-year-old special warfare operator patrick fecks was among the 7 who died. he was assigned to the west coast base naval special warfare unit survived by his father, mother, sister and wife. he is has been the 8th service member from maryland to die. the taliban claiming responsibility for shooting down the plane. nato officials say that's not what happened. flags are flying at half staff in prince georges after a police officer morris was killed in the line of duty. morris and another officer were injured involved in a chase. this happened near 95 and powder mill, chasing two auto thieves and lost control and crashed in to a ditch. morris was killed when he was ejected from the car, only 2 2 be years old. -- 23 years old and part of the

us pictures and video. we will bring you the latest just ahead. we will update you on news around the nation. another death happened from west nile virus, a man in illinois. cbc says they are reporting 26 deaths nationwide. nearly 700 cases of west ni stemming from the mosquito- borne illness. this is the worst year of seen since the disease was detected in the united states in 1999. in dallas, texas, they launched a huge program with air attacks in hopes of killing the mosquito population. lawmakers for a teen accused of killing three of his classmates in ohio will have to wait until september. lain can enter a not guilty plea of insanity. we will let you know if that happens. the 17 year old was in court on monday, accused of shooting 3 of his classmates at sheridan
