charley crowson has the latest information on a train derailment. >> reporter: we are outside the howard county police department, moved our location to get live to you this morning. a mile away, an 80 car train derailed, 23 of the cars carrying coal, spilled out in to howard county. two people have been confirmed dead. there were several dozen people along main street coming in to the streets after they heard about the train derailment, they came out to see what happened. many of them tweeting and calling 911. we have responders down there from csx, they own the train and the rail. howard county is there, baltimore and mtsb. linda so was at the scene moments before 4:30 when we went on the air. >> the family members showed up, the moe, the father, the

stepmother and the victim and older brother and younger brother. the victim's name is elizabeth gnash, about to enter her junior year, about to go back to school when this happened. the older brother and younger brother, told us that his sister had been texting, tweeting, taking pictures, up on the bridge with a friend, all the texts, the messages stopped. the brothers came out here and later on they found out that in deed it was their sister who was killed, elizabeth gnash, about to enter her junior year at james madison university. the family distraught, the bodies were removed from the bridge at 3:45 this morning, taken to the medical examiner's office, when we spoke with ken k the county executive, he has been on the scene since this happened. he said it's too early to tell if it's because they were on the bridge that caused the

derailment, obviously that's part of the investigation. one thing he said for people who live in the area, you want to avoid main street, through the morning rush. the road will be closed to traffic because they have a lot of cleaning up to do. they are hoping to have it re- opened as soon as possible, midday, that's no guarantee. another thing he says if you are familiar with the area, there are bars, restaurants, along main street, the phoenix was a popular bar, a lot of people in the bar when the derailment happened. ken says if this were a friday, saturday night, it would have been so much worse because the place is so crowded, people walking and parking cars along the street. two fatalities, two victims. >> reporter: as we were leaving the scene, csx were bringing in heavy equipment to check the cars. they are going to check the

structural stability of the building and the bridge. csx owns the rail for which the bridge is used. we are learning county executive allman says the maryland department of environmental e quality came out and don't think the coal got in to the river. they will come out for a secondary assessment at first light were when we talked to the patrons, we spoke with some to live in the area, who go to the bar. they see people walking along the tracks along the bridge, fairly often. whether it's younger kids, teens, kids walking along the tracks. we noticed there aren't gates or fencing to block people off. county executive ken allman says that's one thing they are going to assess and talk about the safety as they need to put up more gates and fenceing to keep people out of the area. people when we came out said they see people walking along the tracks all the time.
